In this paper, a procedure to develop fragility curves of structures equipped with semi-active tuned mass dampers (SATMDs) considering multiple failure criteria has been presented while accounting for the uncertainties of the input excitation, structure and control device parameters. In this procedure, Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) method has been employed to generate 30 random SATMD-structure systems and nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) has been conducted under 20 earthquakes to determine the structural responses, where failure probabilities in each intensity level have been evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method. For numerical analysis, an eight-story nonlinear shear building frame with bilinear hysteresis material behavior has been used. Fragility curves for the structure equipped with optimal SATMDs have been developed considering single and multiple failure criteria for different performance levels and compared with that of uncontrolled structure as well as structure controlled using passive tuned mass damper (TMD). Numerical analysis has shown the capability of SATMDs in significant enhancement of the seismic fragility of the nonlinear structure. Also, considering multiple failure criteria has led to increasing the fragility of the structure. Moreover, it is observed that the influence of the uncertainty of input excitation with respect to the other uncertainties is considerable.

A recently published nuclear forensics methodology for source discrimination of separated weapons-grade plutonium utilizes intra-element isotope ratios and a maximum likelihood formulation to identify the most likely source reactor-type, fuel burnup and time since irradiation of unknown material. Sensitivity studies performed here on the effects of random measurement error and the uncertainty in intra-element isotope ratio values show that different intra-element isotope ratios have disproportionate contributions to the determination of the reactor parameters. The methodology is robust to individual errors in measured intra-element isotope ratio values and even more so for uniform systematic errors due to competing effects on the predictions from the selected intra-element isotope ratios suite. For a unique sample-model pair, simulation uncertainties of up to 28% are acceptable without impeding successful source-reactor discrimination. However, for a generic sample with multiple plausible sources within the reactor library, uncertainties of 7% or less may be required. The results confirm the critical role of accurate reactor core physics, fuel burnup simulations and experimental measurements in the proposed methodology where increased simulation uncertainty is found to significantly affect the capability to discriminate between the reactors in the library.
The shear behaviour of reinforced concrete members has been studied over the past decades by various researchers, and it can be simulated by analysing shear panel elements which has been regarded as a basic element of reinforced concrete members subjected to in-plane biaxial stresses. Despite various experimental studies on shear panel element which have been conducted so far, there are still a lot of uncertainties related to what influencing factors govern the shear behaviour and affect failure mechanism in reinforced concrete members. To identify the uncertainties, a finite element analysis can be used, which enables to investigate the impact of specific variables such as the reinforcement ratio, the shear retention factor, and the material characteristics including aggregate interlock, tension stiffening, compressive softening, and shear behaviour at the crack surface. In this study, a non-linear probabilistic analysis was conducted on reinforced concrete panels using a finite element method optimized for reinforced concrete members and advanced sampling techniques so that probabilistic analysis can be performed effectively. Consequently, this study figures out what analysis methodology and input parameters have the most influence on shear behaviour of reinforced concrete panels.
The comprehensive understanding of the fiber reinforced polymer behavior requires the use of advanced non-destructive testing methods due to its heterogeneous microstructure and anisotropic mechanical proprieties. In addition, the material response under load is strongly associated with manufacturing defects (e.g., voids, inclusions, fiber misalignment, debonds, improper cure and delamination). Such imperfections and microstructures induce various damage mechanisms arising at different scales before macrocracks are formed. The origin of damage phenomena can only be fully understood with the access to underlying microstructural features. This makes X-ray Computed Tomography an appropriate imaging tool to capture changes in the bulk of fibrous materials. Moreover, Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) can be used to measure kinematic fields induced by various loading histories. The correlation technique relies on image contrast induced by microstructures. Fibrous composites can be reinforced by different fiber architectures that may lead to poor natural contrast. Hence, a priori analyses need to be performed to assess the corresponding DVC measurement uncertainties. This study aimed to evaluate measurement resolutions of global and regularized DVC for glass fiber reinforced polymers with different fiber architectures. The measurement uncertainties were evaluated with respect to element size and regularization lengths. Even though FE-based DVC could not reach the recommended displacement uncertainty with low spatial resolution, regularized DVC enabled for the use of fine meshes when applying appropriate regularization.

This study investigates the possibility of damage detection of a real bridge by means of a modal parameter-based finite element (FE) model update. Field moving vehicle experiments were conducted on an actual steel plate girder bridge. In the damage experiment, cracks were applied to the bridge to simulate damage states. A fast Bayesian FFT method was employed to identify and quantify uncertainties of the modal parameters then these modal parameters were used in the Bayesian model update. Material properties and boundary conditions are taken as uncertainties and updated in the model update process. Observations showed that although some differences existed in the results obtained from different model classes, the discrepancy between modal parameters of the FE model and those experimentally obtained was reduced after the model update process, and the updated parameters in the numerical model were indeed affected by the damage. The importance of boundary conditions in the model updating process is also observed. The capability of the MCMC model update method for application to the actual bridge structure is assessed, and the limitation of FE model update in damage detection of bridges using only modal parameters is observed.
The dynamic output-feedback robust control method based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) method is presented for suppressing vibration response of a functionally graded material (FGM) beam with piezoelectric actuator/sensor layers in this paper. Based on the reduced model obtained by using direct mode truncation, the linear fractional state space representation of a piezoelectric FGM beam with material properties varying through the thickness is developed by considering both the inherent uncertainties in constitution material properties as well as material distribution and the model error due to mode truncation. The dynamic output-feedback robust H-infinity control law is implemented to suppress the vibration response of the piezoelectric FGM beam and the LMI method is utilized to convert control problem into convex optimization problem for efficient computation. In numerical studies, the flexural vibration control of a cantilever piezoelectric FGM beam is considered to investigate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed control method. Compared with the efficient linear quadratic regulator (LQR) widely employed in literatures, the proposed robust control method requires less control voltage applied to the piezoelectric actuator in the case of same control performance for the controlled closed-loop system.

The layup optimization by genetic algorithm (GA) for the interlaminar strength of laminated composites with free edge is presented. For the calculation of interlaminar stresses of composite laminates with free edges, extended Kantorovich method is applied. In the formulation of GA, repair strategy is adopted for the satisfaction of given constraints. In order to consider the bounded uncertainty of material properties, convex modeling is used. Results of GA optimization with scattered properties are compared with those of optimization with nominal properties. The GA combined with convex modeling can work as a practical tool for maximum interlaminar strength design of laminated composite structures, since uncertainties are always encountered in composite materials and the optimal results can be changed.

The commercial parallel plate electrodes system with guard-ring electrode have been widely used for measurement of dielectric constants of solid materials. And the specification of the electrodes system is about 1 % of measurement uncertainty. This measurement uncertainty is only estimated the error come from mechanical measurements such as the area of the electrodes and the gap between the electrodes except the error come from the air gap between the electrodes and dielectric specimen. Because it is impossible to measure the air gap. This study analyze the total measurement uncertainties of the commercial dielectric constant test cell using 3 kinds of Standard Reference Materials. As a results, the total measurement uncertainty is much bigger than 1 % and the most of the uncertainty can be reduced by compensation of the error values evaluated in this study.

The Advanced Spent Fuel Conditioning Process (ACP) have been developed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) as an alternative for the effective conditioning of spent fuel far long-term storage or/and eventual disposal. This paper addresses the safeguardability of a pilot-scaled ACP facility and its sensitivity analysis. For this, a conceptual process and its material flow are analyzed using experiences from conventional fuel cycles, and measurement methods and their uncertainties are assumed for calculating MUF (Material Uncounted For) standards deviation (SD), We concluded from the preliminary analysis of the MUF SD that the pilot-scaled ACP facility with capacity of 30 MTHM/year can meet the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards goals.
