In this paper, we propose a method of compressing digital hologram standardized data provided by JPEG Pleno. In numerical reconstruction of digital holograms, the addition of random phases for visualization reduces speckle noise due to interference and doubles the compression efficiency of holograms. Holograms are composed of completely complex floating point data, and due to ultra-high resolution and speckle noise, it is essential to develop a compression technology tailored to the characteristics of the hologram. First, frequency characteristics of hologram data are analyzed using various wavelet filters to analyze energy concentration according to filter types. Second, we introduce the subband selection algorithm using energy concentration. Finally, the JPEG2000, SPIHT, H.264 results using the Daubechies 9/7 wavelet filter of JPEG2000 and the proposed method are used to compress and restore, and the efficiency is analyzed through quantitative quality evaluation compared to the compression rate.
Conventional Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters (CPEH) have been extensively studied for maximizing their electrical output through material selection, geometric and structural optimization, and adoption of efficient interface circuits. In this paper, the performance of Stepped Piezoelectric Energy Harvester (SPEH) under harmonic base excitation is studied analytically, numerically and experimentally. The motivation is to compare the energy harvesting performance of CPEH and SPEHs with the same characteristics (resonant frequency). The results of this study challenge the notion of achieving higher voltage and power output through incorporation of geometric discontinuities such as step sections in the harvester beams. A CPEH consists of substrate material with a patch of piezoelectric material bonded over it and a tip mass at the free end to tune the resonant frequency. A SPEH is designed by introducing a step section near the root of substrate beam to induce higher dynamic strain for maximizing the electrical output. The incorporation of step section reduces the stiffness and consequently, a lower tip mass is used with SPEH to match the resonant frequency to that of CPEH. Moreover, the electromechanical coupling coefficient, forcing function and damping are significantly influenced because of the inclusion of step section, which consequently affects harvester's output. Three different configurations of SPEHs characterized by the same resonant frequency as that of CPEH are designed and analyzed using linear electromechanical model and their performances are compared. The variation of strain on the harvester beams is obtained using finite element analysis. The prototypes of CPEH and SPEHs are fabricated and experimentally tested. It is shown that the power output from SPEHs is lower than the CPEH. When the prototypes with resonant frequencies in the range of 56-56.5 Hz are tested at 1 m/s2, three SPEHs generate power output of 482 μW, 424 μW and 228 μW when compared with 674 μW from CPEH. It is concluded that the advantage of increasing dynamic strain using step section is negated by increase in damping and decrease in forcing function. However, SPEHs show slightly better performance in terms of specific power and thus making them suitable for practical scenarios where the ratio of power to system mass is critical.
This study presents a method for designing an athermal middle wavelength infrared (MWIR) zoom lens with the iterative selection of material compositions on an athermal glass map. The optical properties of glass for MWIR are generally very sensitive to temperature, compared with visible glass. To compensate for focus error due to temperature change, the non-athermalized zoom system requires a large amount of movement of a compensator, which results in an unstable zoom system. To solve this problem, the material compositions for an athermal zoom lens have effectively been obtained using the thermal aberration correction process analytically on an athermal glass map. An expander lens is used to enlarge the focal lengths of an original main zoom lens two times. Finally, while this expander is attached to an original athermal zoom system, the final zoom system equipped with this expander doubles the focal length ranges and has stable performance over a specified temperature range.
An actinomycetes, KT-10 isolated from ginseng field in Kyongpook, Korea was selected based on its ability to produce a lysosomal cathepsin B inhibitor. The inhibitor purified from the culture supernatant of the isolate KT-10 showed strong inhibitory effects against cathepsin B as well as against papain when the activities were measured using synthetic substrate, ${\alpha}$-N-benzyloxycarbonyl-L-Iysine p-nitrophenyl ester (CLN) or ${\alpha}$-N-benzoyl-D,L-arginine 2-naphthylamide (BANA). The isolate KT-10 was identified as a species of Streptomyces based on its morphological characteristics and chemotaxonomic data. The TAXON program of Ward was used to identify Streptomyces sp. KT-10 as a strain of Streptomyces luteogriseus belong to cluster 18 of the genus Streptomyces with a Willcox probability 0.999388. The cathepsin B inhibitor was presumed to a novel material composed of a polyhydroxylamine.

This study was designed to investigate students' preferences of instructional modes in CAI which have concrete of formal operational level instructions. Thirty five students of the high school in America were assessed using Longeot test and were given CAI material on the Apple II e computer. The results of this study showed that students who were only capable of functioning at the concrete level of operations frequently preferred to attempt formal operational level instructions for which they were not capable of success. Further, formal operational students frequently preferred concrete operational instructions. There was also no significant difference in the selection of formal operational level of instructions between concrete and formal operational students. There was also no significant correlation between the number of selected formal operational level instructions and the Longeot test score. These results suggested the student's preference to a cognitive developmental level of instruction in CAI was independent of his or her cognitive developmental level.
Automotive battery system consists of various components such as battery cells, mechanical structures, cooling system, and control system. Recently, various computational technologies are required to develop an automotive battery system. Physics-based cell modeling is used for designing a new battery cell by conducting optimization of material selection and composition in electrodes. Structural analysis plays an important role in designing a protective system of battery system from mechanical shock and vibration. Thermal modeling is used in development of thermal management system to maintain the temperature of battery cells in safe range. Finally, vehicle simulation is conducted to validate the performance of electric vehicle with the developed battery system.
The selection of suitable delignification conditions and optimization of process variables is crucial to the successful operation of chemical pulping processes. Soda pulping of Carpolobia lutea was investigated, as an alternative raw material for pulp and paper production. The process was optimized under the influence of three operational variables, namely, temperature, time and concentration of cooking liquor. Equations derived using a second - order polynomial design predicted the pulp yield and lignin dissolution with errors less than 8% and 11% respectively. The maximum variations in the pulp yield using a second order factorial design was caused by changes in both time and alkali concentration. Optimum pulp yield of 43.87% was obtained at low values of the process variables. The selectivity of lignin dissolution was independent of the working conditions, allowing quantitative estimations to be established between the pulp yield and residual lignin content within the range studied.

This paper describes a two-step Tikhonov regularization procedure for converting the steady shear data generated by parallel-disk viscometers, in the presence of wall slip, into a shear stress-shear rate function and a wall shear stress-slip velocity functions. If the material under test has a yield stress or a critical wall shear stress below which no slip is observed the method will also provide an estimate of these stresses. Amplification of measurement noise is kept under control by the introduction of two separate regularization parameters and Generalized Cross Validation is used to guide the selection of these parameters. The performance of this procedure is demonstrated by applying it to the parallel disk data of an oil-in-water emulsion, of a foam and of a mayonnaise.
In level set method, material properties are made to change smoothly across an interface of two materials with different properties by introducing an interpolation or smoothing scheme. So far, the weighted arithmetic mean (WAM) method has been exclusively adopted in level set method, without complete assessment for its validity. We showed here that the weighted harmonic mean (WHM) method for rate constants of various rate processes, including viscosity, thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, and permittivity, gives much more accurate results than the WAM method. The selection of interpolation scheme is particularly important in multi-phase electrohydrodynamic problems in which driving force for fluid flow is electrical force exerted on the phase interface. Our analysis also showed that WHM method for both electrical conductivity and permittivity gives not only more accurate, but also more physically realistic distribution of electrical force at the interface. Our arguments are confirmed by numerical simulations of drop deformation under DC electric field.
