  • In this paper, A new PI-type reaching law for variable structure control is proposed to alleviate the chattering and improve the robustness properties in the presence of matched uncertainty. The proposed reaching law consists of a proportional term and an integral term. And the dynamics of switching function can easily be specified by using the second-order system analysis method. And also the proposed scheme has the advantages of alleviating the chattering than Gao's one and reducing the influence of uncertainties by band pass filter characteristic. The efficiency of the proposed method has been demonstrated by simulations for Dutch Roll damping in a light aircraft.

  • In this paper, a multi-input multi-output(MIMO) integral variable structure system with an integral-augmented sliding surface is designed for the improved robust control of uncertain multivariable system under the matched persistent disturbance. To effectively remove the reaching phase problems, the integral augmented sliding surface is proposed. Then for its design, the eigenstructure assignment technique is introduced to. To guarantee the designed performance against the persistent disturbance, the stabilizing control for multi-input system is also designed to generate the sliding mode on the integral sliding surface. The stability of the global system together with the existence condition of the sliding mode are investigated and proved for the case of multi input system in the presence of uncertainty and disturbance. The reaching phase is completely removed in proposed MIMO VSS by satisfying the two requirements. An example and computer simulations will be present for showing the usefulness of algorithm.

  • An efficient corner matching algorithm is developed to minimize the amount of calculation. To reduce the amount of calculation, all available information from a corner detector is used to make model. This information has uncertainties due to discretization noise and geometric distortion, and this is represented by fuzzy rule base which can represent and handle the uncertainties. Form fuzzy inference procedure, a matched segment list is extracted, and resulted segment list is used to calculate the transformation between object of model and scene. To reduce the false hypotheses, a vote and re-vote method is developed. Also an auto tuning scheme of the fuzzy rule base is developed to find out the uncertainties of features from recognized results automatically. To show the effectiveness of the developed algorithm, experiments are conducted for images of real electronic components.

  • Red beet (Beta vulgaris L.) is a root vegetable and a popular functional food ingredient of dark red-purple appearance due largely to betacyanins, principally betanine (75-95%) and its isomer, isobetanine (15-45%). This study developed an analytical method for beet red in terms of betanine and isobetanine in processed food products labeled with beet red as a food additive. High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Diode Array Detector (HPLC-DAD) was used with a C18 column. Linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), accuracy, precision and uncertainty in measurement were calculated for method validation. Matrix-matched calibration was applied to the candy, ice cream, and cocoa product, respectively, and R2 was ≥0.9998, showing a high level of linearity. The LOD and LOQ were 0.16 to 0.32 and 0.48 to 0.97 mg/L, respectively. As a result of repeated intra-day and interday experiments to validate the accuracy and precision of the analytical method, the recovery rates were 96.0-103.1% and 100.0-102.2%, respectively and the RSD% was 0.5-3.3% and 0.9-3.8%, respectively. Moreover, the measurement uncertainty was estimated to be 1.71-12.43% depending on the matrix and the measured concentration. In this study, betanine and isobetanine were quantified (8.4-3,823.4 mg/kg) by applying the developed analytical method to processed food products (n= 26; e.g., candy, ice cream, and other processed foods) labeled with beet red as a food additive.

  • Many studies are conducted in several fields for fragility analysis of structures or elements which is a probabilistic seismic safety analysis in consideration with uncertainty of seismic loading. It is hard to directly conduct fragility analysis for an infrastructure with social importance due to its size. Therefore, a fragility analysis for an infrastructure mainly conducted in element level or conducted with scaled model built in accordance with similarity law. In this article, fragility analysis for prototype and scaled model of reinforced concrete column was conducted with numerical models which had been updated by the results of shaking table test and pseudo dynamic test. As a result, response stress from the numerical analysis result of prototype model was higher than that from scaled model due to different stiffness ratios between steel and concrete. However, the probability of failure for scaled model was higher than that for prototype model because failure criteria for scaled model was down due to similarity law. Also it was evaluated that probability of failure by using log normal standard deviation of response stresses by spectrum matched accelerograms was more reliable than probability of failure by using existing coefficient of variation normally used.

  • As the uncertainty of precipitation increases due to climate change, seasonal forecasting and the use of weather forecasts become essential for efficient water resources management. In this study, the categorical probabilistic long-term forecasts implemented by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration) since June 2014 was evaluated using assessment indicators of Hit Rate, Reliability Diagram, and Relative Operating Curve (ROC) and a technique for obtaining quantitative precipitation estimates based on probabilistic forecasts was proposed. The probabilistic long-term forecasts showed its maximum predictability of 48% and the quantified precipitation estimates were closely matched with actual observations; maximum correlation coefficient (R) in predictability evaluation for 100% accurate and actual weather forecasts were 0.98 and 0.71, respectively. A precipitation quantification approach utilizing probabilistic forecasts proposed in this study is expected to enable water management considering the uncertainty of precipitation. This method is also expected to be a useful tool for supporting decision-making in the long-term planning for water resources management and reservoir operations.

  • Notwithstanding the big potential benefits from interorganizational information systems (IOS), not very many companies have realized these benefits. In an attempt to explain this phenomenon, this study proposes a new construct of IOS asymmetry which refers to the asymmetry in information transparency between supply chain (SC) partners. When there is IOS asymmetry in SC relationships, IOS may not facilitate seamless information exchange among SC partners. Instead, IOS asymmetry may result in SC inefficiencies due to a lack of information sharing. The objective of this study is to empirically investigate whether IOS asymmetry exists in practice and whether it influences SC performance negatively. The data was collected from 130 matched pairs of upstream SC partners in manufacturing industries. The results show that IOS asymmetry indeed decreases overall SC performance. Also, the relationship between IOS asymmetry and SC performance is strengthened under the conditions of high environmental uncertainty.

  • Seismic qualification of instruments and devices mounted on electrical cabinets in a nuclear power plant is performed in this study by means of the in-cabinet response spectrum (ICRS). A simple method and two rigorous methods are proposed in the EPRI NP-7146-SL guidelines for generating the ICRS. The simple method of EPRI can give unrealistic spectra that are excessively conservative in many cases. In the past, the time domain analysis (TDA) methods have been mostly used to analyze a structure. However, the TDA requires the generation of an artificial earthquake input motion compatible to the target response spectrum. The process of generating an artificial earthquake may involve a great deal of uncertainty. In addition, many time history analyses should be performed to increase the accuracy of the results. This study developed a numerical analysis program for generating the ICRS by frequency domain analysis (FDA) method. The developed program was validated by the numerical study. The ICRS calculated by FDA thoroughly matched with those obtained from TDA. This study then confirms that the method it proposes can simply and efficiently generate the ICRS compared to the time domain method.

  • The effect of nonlinear friction in the low velocity is dominant in precise controlled mechanisms and it is difficult to model. This paper is concerned with the compensation for friction using the variable structure system approach as nonmodel based method. The problem of chattering in the sliding mode controller is suppressed by the implementation of the boundary layer concept. And the estimation for friction using sliding mode observer makes the upper bound of matched uncertainty reduced. Accordingly, the effect of chattering can be more suppressed. And the sliding surface is constructed by adding an integral component to the switching function that is made by using error dynamics. This sliding surface guarantees the good tracking performance. Experimental results for a XY table system show that the proposed method has a good performance especially in the low velocity.

  • In randomly deployed networks, such as sensor networks, an important problem for each node is to discover its neighbor nodes so that the connectivity amongst nodes can be established. In this paper, we consider this problem by incorporating the physical layer parameters in contrast to the most of the previous work which assumed a collision channel. Specifically, the pilot signals that nodes transmit are successfully decoded if the strength of the received signal relative to the interference is sufficiently high. Thus, each node must extract signal parameter information from the superposition of an unknown number of received signals. This problem falls naturally in the purview of random set theory (RST) which generalizes standard probability theory by assigning sets, rather than values, to random outcomes. The contributions in the paper are twofold: First, we introduce the realistic effect of physical layer considerations in the evaluation of the performance of logical discovery algorithms; such an introduction is necessary for the accurate assessment of how an algorithm performs. Secondly, given the double uncertainty of the environment (that is, the lack of knowledge of the number of neighbors along with the lack of knowledge of the individual signal parameters), we adopt the viewpoint of RST and demonstrate its advantage relative to classical matched filter detection method.
