  • In this paper, a compact fully printable bandpass filter is suggested for a low-frequency channel 3.2 GHz ~ 3.7 GHz in the Ultra-Wideband (UWB) communication system. It is featured with a small geometry of $0.5{\lambda}_g/15$ and a low insertion loss despite using FR4 as a cheap substrate of a high dielectric loss. This is made possible by generating zeroth-order-resonance (ZOR) from one cell comprising two series resonances obviously separated from one shunt resonance as a third-order bandpass filter. Especially, the series resonance elements are combined with spur-lines bent by 90 degrees, which makes the port-impedance matched well and eliminates spurious hikes in the stopband, while the overall size remains almost unchanged. The design is carried out by setting up the equivalent circuit and the circuit simulation is checked by the full-wave EM analysis. The structure is manufactured and measured to show that the circuit modeling and EM simulation results agree with the measured data.

  • In this paper, perfodrmance of matched-filter (MF) acquisition scheme is analyzed for a direct-sequence/code-division-multiple-access (DS/CDMA) system in a microcellular environment. Mean acquistion time is used as a performance measure. It is demonstrated that acquisition performance is enhanced using interference suppression filter in a Rician fading channel. To apply for multiuser environments, multiple access interference is considered in the performance analysis. From the numerical results, it is shown that mean acquistion time decreases with the increasing SNR/chip, and acquisition performance is improved as the number of taps of interference suppression filter. It is also shown that mean acquisition time increases with the number of users in the system, and acquistion performance is degraded as the icrease of narrowband interference bandwidth. The analysis in this paper can be applied to a DS/CDMA overlay environment.

  • In this paper, the Bit Error Ratio (BER) performances of the D8PSK modulation schemes for VDL Mode-2 are analyzed according to the matched and unmatched cases of the channel filters. The carrier frequency and phase offset effects are analyzed with unmatched case. Generally in digital transmission techniques, the Root Raised Cosine filters which are used as channel filters are applied to both sides at transmitter and receiver in order to achieve no ISI, but in VDL Mode-2, the Raised Cosine Filter is used only in transmission section and the receiver section uses general low pass filter, therefore we could not achieve ISI reduction effects but can have better spectrum quality. From the simulation results, the error probability is increased slightly (1~2dB) with use of un-matched channel filter, we got the conclusions that carrier phase offset do not effect to bit error ratio, but the frequency offset effect is so serious. Finally, narrow band D8PSK modulation signals are generated by the use of Digital Up-Converter and then its features are compared with analog modulator.

  • For scale and rotation invariant pattern recognition of images with noise, an optical wavelet CHF-fSDF filter is proposed. Wavelet CHF-fSDF filter is synthesized by each single CHF extracted from scale-changed and wavelet transformed images for a referene image as training images. The proposed optical wavelet CHF-fSDF filter is the type of the matched filter so that it can use the structure of 4f optical correlation system. The results of computer simulation show that the proposed filter has the rotation and scale-invariant correlation output and it is useful in the noisy input.

  • In this paper, we study a series active power filter to compensate current harmonics and unbalanced source voltages. Conventional control methods for compensating unbalanced source voltages use source voltages to calculate compensation voltages, and in addition use load voltages to regulate load voltages. But the proposed control method uses load voltage to compensate unbalanced source voltages and regulate load voltages. And we propose a control method to reduce current harmonics which can calculate compensation voltages directly from source currents and load voltages. By well-matched operation of two control methods, the series active power filter can compensate current harmonics, unbalanced source voltages, and regulate load voltages. We compose a combined system of the series active power filter and parallel passive filters to confirm a validity of proposed control methods. The results from experiments are presented to demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • To improve the noise characteristics, software-based noise reduction algorithms are widely used in cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) pixelated semiconductor gamma camera system. The purpose of this study was to develop an improved median filtering algorithm using a thresholding method for noise reduction in a CZT pixelated semiconductor gamma camera system. The gamma camera system simulated is a CZT pixelated semiconductor detector with a pixel-matched parallel-hole collimator and the spatial resolution phatnom was designed with the Geant4 Application for Tomography Emission (GATE). In addition, a noise reduction algorithm with a median filter using an improved thresholding method is developed and we applied our proposed algorithm to an acquired spatial resolution phantom image. According to the results, the proposed median filter improved the noise characteristics compared to a conventional median filter. In particular, the average for normalized noise power spectrum, contrast to noise ratio, and coefficient of variation results using the proposed median filter were 10, 1.11, and 1.19 times better than results using conventional median filter, respectively. In conclusion, our results show that the proposed median filter using improved the thresholding method results in high imaging performance when applied in a CZT semiconductor gamma camera system.

  • This paper presents a sensor fusion method to recognize a cylindrical object a CCD camera, a laser slit beam and ultrasonic sensors on a pan/tilt device. For object recognition with a vision sensor, an active light source projects a stripe pattern of light on the object surface. The 2D image data are transformed into 3D data using the geometry between the camera and the laser slit beam. The ultrasonic sensor uses an ultrasonic transducer array mounted in horizontal direction on the pan/tilt device. The time of flight is estimated by finding the maximum correlation between the received ultrasonic pulse and a set of stored templates - also called a matched filter. The distance of flight is calculated by simply multiplying the time of flight by the speed of sound and the maximum amplitude of the filtered signal is used to determine the face angle to the object. To determine the position and the radius of cylindrical objects, we use a statistical sensor fusion. Experimental results show that the fused data increase the reliability for the object recognition.
