  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the print form of UDC(Universal Decimal Classification) standard edition which was published by British Standards Institution in 2005 to Korean edition which was published by Korea Scientific & Technological Information Center in 1973, and to suggest the appropriate revision directions of future Korean edition. This study suggests that the future Korean edition should be revised based on the Master Reference File and should be a print edition which is composed of systematic tables and alphabetical index from the standard edition. In addition, the future Korean edition needs to strengthen international universality and to extend synthetic method using its auxiliary tables.

  • This study examined the historical background and structural characteristics of the UDC(Universal Decimal Classification) standard edition which has been created from the entire content of the Master Reference File database. We made a comparison of the structural characteristics between UDC standard edition and Korean abridged edition. UDC is a hybrid of two kinds of documentary classification scheme, that is enumerative and analytico-synthetic, and its structure reflects this feature. It is found that UDC standard edition extended the universality and synthetic method using its auxiliary tables compare to Korean abridged edition.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare the accuracy of digital scans of implants according to different shapes of scanbodies, and to compare the accuracy of library merging according to different oral exposure height. Materials and methods: A master model with a single tooth edentulous site was prepared. For the first experiment, three types of intraoral scanbodies were prepared, divided into three groups, and the following experiments were conducted for each group: An internal hex implant was placed. The master model with the scanbody connected was scanned with a model scanner, and a master reference file (control group) was created. 10 files (experimental group) were created by performing 10 consecutive scans with an intraoral scanner. After superimposing the control and experimental groups, the following values were calculated: 1) Distance deviation of a designated point on the scanbody 2) Angle deviation of the major axis of the scanbody. For the second experiment, the scanbody scan data were prepared in 6 different heights. Library files were merged with each of the scan data. The distance and angular deviation were calculated using the 7 mm scan data as control group. Results: In the first experiment, there were no significant differences between A and B (P=.278), B and C (P=.568), and C and A (P=.711) in the distance deviations. There were no significant differences between A and B (P=.568), B and C (P=.546), and C and A (P=.112) in the angular deviations. Also, the scanbody showed significantly higher library merging accuracy in the groups with high oral exposure height (P<.5). Conclusion: There were no significant differences in scan accuracy according to the different shapes of scanbodies, and the accuracy of library merging increased according to exposure height of the scanbody in the oral cavity.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate historical backgrounds, maintenance, revision and application areas of UDC(Universal Decimal Classification) in order to understand current issues of it systematically. Since 1905, n has been extensively developed and is now administered by UDC Consortium(UDCC). UDCC updates MRF(Master Reference File), an electronic form of the UDC schedules, once a year. UDC updates and publishes standard edition extended edition, and abridged edition according to the degrees of notion abridgement, and is available on the web. UDC can be now applicable to collection arrangement, SDI(Selective Dissemination of Information) service, searching subject bibliographies, switching language or subject gateway and metadata on the Internet, and automatic classification.

  • The core version of UDC(Universal Decimal Classification) is available in an electronic form called MRF(Master Reference File) which supports the maintenance of the quality of the scheme as a working tool for the UDCC(UDC Consortium) by annual reviewing its content and initiating revisions and extensions. In this paper, we discuss outcomes of our in-depth analysis of the geography, biography and history disciplines in UDC focused on the its evolutions and characteristics, including the common auxiliaries of place, the common auxiliaries of time and the common auxiliaries of race, ethnic grouping and nationality. Based on the in-depth analysis, we suggested some ideas which can be applied into the history class of KDC(Korean Decimal Classification). In particular, its principle of combination methods in the history of individual regions, the way of its assignment of physical geography and human geography in the same division, the possibilities of the extension of the table of geographical division and the adaptation of the table of chronological division in KDC.
