The author studied the changes of electromyographic activities of the masseter and anterior temporal muscles during maximal clenching before and after stabilization splint wearing. It also studied the changes of the symmetry of the muscle activity during maximal clenching. For this study, 15-healthy-female-students were selected. The obtained results were as follows : The EMG activities of right and left anterior temporal muscles and right masseter muscle during maximal clenching immediately after wearing of the stabilization splint were not changed compared with before wearing of the stabilization splint. The EMG activities of right and left masseter and anterior temporal muscles during maximal clenching were significantly increased after 1 week and 4 week-use of the stabilization splint(p<0.01). The asymmetric indices of the EMG activities of right and left masseter and anterior temporal muscles during maximal clenching immediately after wearing of the stabilization splint were not changed compared with before wearing of the stabilization splint. The asymmetric indices of the EMG activities of right and left anterior temporal muscles during maximal clenching were significantly decreased after 1 week and 4 week use of the stabilization splint(p<0.01). and that of masseter muscles showed a decreased tendency but there were no significant differences(p>0.05).
Along with form and function relationship of craniofacial growth comes a concern for the masticatory muscles with postnormal occlusion. It is the aim of this study to grope the certain differences upon the electromyographic activities of the masticatory muscles between normal occlusion and class II malocclusion during the varieties of oral functions. 26 persons of normal occlusion whose mean age were 18.9-25.6 years and another 26 persons of class II malocclusion whose mean age were 19.0-28.9 years served for this study. The electromyographic recordings processed by $Medelec^{\circledR}$ MS 25 EMG apparatus were taken from the anterior and posterior temporal, and anterior and posterior masseter muscles of both sides, and suprahyoid muscles as well. Analyses of the data toward such specific activities as mandibular rest, maximal biting, chewing gums and swallowing peanuts turned out the following summary and conclusions. 1. The maximal mean amplitude of the posterior temporalis showed significant augmentation in class II malocclusion, however the anterior temporalis, posterior masseter, and suprahyoid muscles manifested meaningful diminutions. 2. Stronger posterior temporalis and weaker anterior masseter and suprahyoid muscles were arranged in maximal biting with parameters of maximal mean amplitude. 3. The anterior temporalis of working side expressed smaller maximal mean amplitude in class II malocclusion. Significant swelling in duration were shown at anterior and posterior temporalis of working side, and posterior temporalis of balancing side in class II malocclusion, and marked reduction at anterior masseter of balancing side and posterior masseter of working side as well. The lessened latency were expressed at anterior masseter of working side, and anterior and posterior masseter of balancing side. Class II malocclusion group had significant prolongation of silent period duration. Mean silent period duration of 10.75 msec in normal occlusion and 24.37 msec in class II malocclusion were calculated. 4. Significant augmentations of maximal mean amplitude while swallowing peanuts were yielded at right anterior temporalis and posterior temporalis of both sides, however left anterior masseter and right posterior masseter showed diminution. No significant differences in duration showed at every muscle examined in class II malocclusion group.5. Weaker masseter and stronger temporalis were suggested as characteristics of class II malocclusion.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the muscle activity of the group function occlusion and the changed canine guided occlusion using EM2. In this study, 13 subjects with group function occlusion and without temporomandibular disorders were selected, each subject was changed to the canine guided occlusion by forming the lingual ramps in the upper canines with light curing composite resin. The muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle were recorded in the group function occlusion and immediately, one week, and two weeks after changing to the canine guided occlusion under the condition of maximum voluntary clenching in centric occlusion, lateral excursion, and during gum chewing. The results were as follows: 1. In case of maximum voluntary clenching in centric occlusion, the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working and balancing side didn't show any difference immediately after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to it the muscle activities of the anterior temporal masseter muscle of working and balancing side were increased significantly, and two weeks after changing to it the muscle activities of the masseter muscle were increased significantly in comparison with the group function occlusion. 2. In case of maximum voluntary clenching in lateral excursion, the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working and balancing side were reduced significantly immediately after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to it the muscle activities of the anterior temporal muscle of balancing side and of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working side were reduced significantly, and 2 weeks after changing to it the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working side were reduced significantly in comparison with the .group function occlusion. 3. During gum chewing, the muscle activities of the anterior temporal and masseter muscle of working and balancing side didn't show any difference immediately after changing to the canine guided occlusion, one week after changing to it the muscle activities of the masseter muscle of working and balancing side were increased significantly, and two weeks after changing to it only the muscle activities of masseter muscle of working side were increased significantly.
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of food intake after different dosages of botulinum toxin A (BTX) injection in the animal model. Additionally, the dimensional and histological change at 14 days after BTX injection was also evaluated. Methods: The comparative study was performed using the BTX injection model in rats (n = 5 for each group). Group 1 was the saline-injected group. Group 2 was the 5-unit BTX-injection group to each masseter muscle. Group 3 was the 10-unit BTX-injection group to each masseter muscle. Food intake rates and body weight were checked daily before and after BTX injection until 10 days. All animals were sacrificed at 14 days after BTX injection, and the specimens underwent hematoxylin and eosin stain and immunohistochemical staining for myosin type II (MYH2). Results: The recovery of food intake in groups 2 and 3 decreased significantly compared with group 1 from day 2 to day 7 and day 9 after injection (p < 0.05). The BTX-treated masseter muscles were significantly smaller than those in group 1 (p = 0.015). The immunohistochemical findings demonstrated that the expression of MYH2 was significantly higher in group 3 compared to groups 1 and 2 (p < 0.001). Conclusions: BTX injection to the masseter muscle in rats demonstrated short food-intake-rate reduction with recovery until 10 days after injection. The thickness of the masseter muscle and MYH2 expression were significantly changed according to the injected dose of BTX.
The author has synchronously recorded the average electromyographic activities of the sternocleidomastoid muscles, the anterior temporal muacles and the masseter muscles. The marious levels of occlusal force were checked during clenching the resin plates which are made to fit each of the maxillary and the mandibular teeth. These activities were recorded in order to study the EMG activity pattern of the sternocleidomastoid muscle during the masticatory function of the jaw in 11 healthy subjects. The obtined results were as follows : 1. The electromyographic activities of the sternocleidomastoid muscles, the anterior temporal muscles and the masseter muscles were increased as the occlusal force increased, and the sternocleidomastoid muscles have a lineal correlationship with the occlusal force. 2. The sternocleidomastoid muscles and the masseter muscles showed higher EMG activity during clenching at the ventroflexed head position rather than at the extended head position. (p<0.05) However the EMG activities of the anterior temporal muscles showed no difference between the ventroflexed position and the extended position of the head. 3. The electromyographic activities of the sternocleidomastoid muscles, the anterior temporal muscles and the masseter muscles during clenching are similar at the habitual position and at the retruded condylar position. 4. The electromyographic activities of the sternocleidomastoid muscles, the anterior temporal muscles and the masseter muscles on the working side during mastication of gum and almonds are significantly higher than on the balancing side except the masseter muscles during mastication of almonds. (p<0.05, P<0.01) 5. The asymmetry of gum are lower than that during mastication of almonds. (p<0.05) The asymmetry indices of the sternocleidomastoid muscles are higher than those of the anterior temporal muscles and masseter muscles.

Purpose The prominent mandible angle, otherwise known as "square face", has been recognized as an aesthetic problem that needs correction by many in the Asian community. Many surgeons considered that mandible angle ostectomy alone, brings about hypotrophy of the masseter muscle. However, it was only proven indirectly (by clinical experience and histological animal experiments) and not objectively. In this study, we evaluated the volume of masseter muscle to prove the effect, objectively. Materials and method Computed tomography (CT) images were used to measure the masseter muscle volume of normal female group (n=6), and of female patient group n=8, preoperative and early & late postoperative volumes) presenting the symptom of prominent mandible angle. The data was analyzed statistically by two-sample t-test and paired t-test using SAS (version 8.2). Results In normal female group, volume average was $16,142{\pm}2,829.8mm^3$. In patient group, preoperative volume averaged $24,447{\pm}4,544.5mm^3$ (p<0.0001), early postoperative volume measured average of $31,966{\pm}50,421mm^3$ which is a 30% increase from the preoperative volume (p<0.0001). Late postoperative measurement was $20,202{\pm}4,092.3mm^3$, which is a 20% decrease from the preoperative volume (p<0.0006). Conclusion The bone reduction of prominent mandible angle induce the hypotrophic effect of masseter muscle after long term follow up (5 more months). This result mean that the result of mandible angle contouring surgery can be considered as combined effect of bony angle reduction and subsequent masseter muscle hypotrophy.

Background The masseter nerve is a useful donor nerve for reconstruction in patients with established facial palsy, with numerous advantages including low morbidity, a strong motor impulse, high reliability, and fast reinnervation. In this study, we assessed the results of masseter nerve-innervated free gracilis muscle transfer in established facial palsy patients. Methods Ten patients with facial palsy who received treatment from January 2015 to January 2017 were enrolled in this study. Three patients received masseter nerve-only free gracilis transfer, and seven received double-innervated free gracilis transfer (masseter nerve and a cross-face nerve graft). Patients were evaluated using the Facial Assessment by Computer Evaluation software (FACEgram) to quantify oral commissure excursion and symmetry at rest and when smiling after muscle transfer. Results The mean time between surgery and initial movement was roughly 167.7 days. A statistically significant increase in excursion at rest and when smiling was seen after muscle transfer. There was a significant increase in the distance of oral commissure excursion at rest and when smiling. A statistically significant increase was observed in symmetry when smiling. Terzis' functional and aesthetic grading scores showed significant improvements postoperatively. Conclusions Masseter nerve innervation is a good option with many uses in in established facial palsy patients. For some conditions, it is the first-line treatment. Free gracilis muscle transfer using the masseter nerve has excellent results with good symmetry and an effective degree of recovery.
Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the expression levels of p65 and S100 in the rat masseter muscle after the injection of different concentrations of botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A). Methods: We injected either 5 or 10 U of BTX-A into both masseter muscle of rats. As a control group, the same volume of saline was injected. After 14 days, the animals were sacrificed. Subsequently, a biopsy and immunohistochemical staining of the samples were performed using a p65 or S100 antibody. Results: The cross-sectional area of each myofibril was significantly reduced by BTX-A injection (P < 0.001). The expression of p65 and S100 increased significantly with increasing concentrations of BTX-A (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The injection of BTX-A into the masseter muscle induced muscle atrophy. Subsequently, p65 and S100 expression in myoblasts were increased for the protection of muscle cells.
Fifteen young pigs were used in this study. The animals were divided into three groups 1. Group for removal of the temporal muscle, 2. Group for removal of the masseter muscle, 3, Group for removal of masseter and internal pterygoid muscles. The animals were anesthetized with $3.5\%$ chloral hydrate intraperitoneally. In the right side the head was shaved. The masticatory muscle was removed. The animals were sacrificed four months later. The head was separated from trunk and cleaned by boiling in a solution of potassium hydroxide. The results were as follows; 1. In the group for removal of the temporal muscle, the Coronoid process of the mandible was resorbed. 2. In the group for removal of the masseter muscle, there was produced asymmetrical growth of the mandible, attrition of the molar teeth in the control side, and resorption of the mandibular angle. 3. In the group for removal of the Masseter and Internal muscles, the changes were more severe than that of the group for removal of the masseter muscle. The mandibular angle was completely absent. 4. The growth of the bone seems definitely related to the presence of the muscular tissue actively pulling upon it.

A patient, who underwent partial masseter muscle resection and mandibular angle reduction at a plastic surgery clinic, visited this hospital with major complaints of trismus and dysesthesia. A secondary angle formation due to a wrong surgical method was observed via clinical and radiological examinations, and the patient complained of trismus due to the postoperative scars and muscular atrophy caused by the masseter muscle resection. The need for a masseter muscle resection in square jaw patients must be approached with caution. In addition, surgical techniques must be carefully selected in order to prevent complications, and obtain effective and satisfactory surgery results.
