  • This paper is a report on the parametric study of the friction characteristics on the direct acting type OHC valve train system. The numerical simulation was performed by using the IV-TAP. Dynamic analysis by using the lumped mass method was previously performed to define the acting load. The friction characteristics were analyzed by using the partial asperity contact model. The effects of operating conditions and major design parameters on the total driving torque were investigated. From the analytical prediction, it is found that valve spring stillness, surface roughness, and base circle radius are the main factors to reduce the frictional loss on the valve train system.

  • In this study, the dynamic response of the umbilical cable in a deep-water unmanned underwater vehicle system was analyzed. In order to analyze the forces acting on the cable, the launcher and umbilical cable were modeled by the simple 1-D mass-spring system. Damping and dynamic analysis was carried out by a direct time integration scheme using the $Newmark-{\beta}$ method with inverse iteration procedure, considering the nonlinear drag forces acting on the launcher. The obtained results of the present study can be used for the design of connecting the structure of the launcher and cable of the UUV system.

  • Many direct integration methods are used for numerical analyses of dynamic motion. In these methods, the governing equations of a dynamic system are integrated successively using a step-by-step numerical integration procedure. Time derivatives in the equations are generally approximated using difference formulas involving one or more increments of the time. Time increment has closely relationship with the accuracy of the motion analysis. In this paper, a 4th order Houbolt direct integration method is derived. For a spring-mass system, the motion of the system are analyzed from the 3rd order Houbolt and the 4th order Houbolt approaches respectively. Finally the paper proposes the optimal time-increment based on the accuracy of numerical analyses.

  • Prediction method of floor impact noise for light and heavy weight impact is described. Sound pressure level is predicted based on the impedance method. For floating floor system, noise reduction is studied assuming 1-D mass-spring system. It is found that comparisons of predictions and measurements show good agreements. However, certain correction factor is needed to predict noise reduction of floating floor system.

  • A method for performing dynamic design sensitivity analysis of vehicle suspension systems which have three dimensional closed-loop kinematic structure is presented. A recursive form of equations of motion for a MacPherson suspension system is derived as basis for sensitivity analysis. By directly differentiating the equations of motion with respect to design variables, sensitivity equations are obtained. The direct generalize for the application of multibody dynamic sensitivity analysis. Based on the proposed sensitivity analysis, optimal design of a MacPherson suspension system is carried out taking unsprung mass, spring and damping coefficients as design variables.

  • A linear quarter model of a vehicle suspension system is built and simulated. Especially the so-called sensitivity analysis is conducted in order to show its applicability to design problems, and sensitivity function is determined in the frequency domain. The change of frequency response function is predicted, which depends on the design parameter variation and the property is verified by computer simulation. Typical performance measures, namely, sprung mass acceleration, suspension deflection, and tire deflection are examined. The vehicle model is analyzed for ist performance sensitivity as a function of the system's feedback gains. The variable feedback gains are selected as the spring and damping coefficients. Frequency response, RMS response, and performance index of the performance evaluation variables are considered and three-dimensional and contour plots of response surfaces are formed to examine output sensitivity to suspension feedback. Performance trade-offs over the entire frequency spectrum are identified from the FRF, and that between ride quality and handling characteristics are examined from the RMS responses.

  • This study presents the nonlinear free and forced vibrations of a cracked atomic force microscopy (AFM) cantilever by using the modified couple stress. The cracked section of the AFM cantilever is considered and modeled as rotational spring. In the frame work of Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, Von-Karman type of geometric nonlinear equation and the modified couple stress theory, the nonlinear equation of motion for the cracked AFM is derived by Hamilton's principle and then discretized by using the Galerkin's method. The semi-inverse method is utilized for analysis nonlinear free oscillation of the system. Then the method of multiple scale is employed to investigate primary resonance of the system. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effects of some parameters such as depth of the crack, length scale parameter, Tip-Mass, the magnitude and the location of the external excitation force on the nonlinear free and forced vibration behavior of the system.

  • Air pollution inventories are aggregated around south-eastern part of the Korean Peninsular including Busan, Ulsan, and Changwon cities. Because densely populated cities are concentrated in this region, air pollutants emitted from one of these cities tend to be impacted on the air quality of other cities. In order to clarify the seasonal movement pattern of emitted particles, several numerical simulations using WRF/FLEXPART were carried out. Four cases were selected for each season. The Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) reproduced atmospheric flow fields with nested grids. The seasonal pattern of air mass of study area was determined by backward and forward trajectories. As a result, the air parcel moves from northwest to southeast due to northwesterly winds in spring and winter. Also air parcel transports from south to north in summer, and moves from west to east. Because the air mass moves differently in each season, these characteristics should be considered when performing air quality analysis.

  • The combined deckstructure-car system of a car carrier is especially sensitive to hull girder vibrations due to mechanical excitations and wave loads. For the free and forced vibration analysis of the system, the analytical methods based on the receptance method and two schemes for efficient applications of the methods are presented. The methods are especially relevant to dynamical reanalysis of the system subject to design modification or to dynamic optimization. The deck-car system is modelled as a combined system consisting of a stiffened plate representing deck, primary structure, and attached subsystems such as pillars, additional stiffeners and damped spring-mass systems representing cars/trucks. For response calculations of the system subjected to displacement excitations along the boundaries, the support displacement transfer ratio conceptually similar to the receptance is introduced. For the verification of accuracy and calculation efficiency of the proposed methods, numerical and experimental investigations are carried out.
