A third-order simulation model of VM heat pumps has been developed. This model allows consideration of the major losses such as heat conduction losses through regenerators and displacers, pumping losses and wall-to-gas heat transfer losses in working volumes, in addition to the heat exchanger and regenerator losses. The working volume was divided into 12 control volumes and conservation equations of mass and energy were applied to each control volume. Pressure drop was considered in regenerators only. Thermodynamic behavior of working fluid in a VM heat pump was investigated and effects of major losses on the performance of a VM heat pump were shown.
In this paper, OTEC(Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) system with vapor-vapor ejector is newly proposed. And 6 wet refrigerants are applied into the proposed OTEC system for performance comparison. The results of comparison performance are as follows. In the view of system efficiency, R32/R744(90:10) has the highest efficiency among the 6 refrigerants. In case of evaporation capacity, pump work and mass flow rate of working fluid, R744, R717 and R717 is lowest value, respectively. As this results, the vapor-vapor ejector is able to increase the efficiency of system. And It is necessary to select the optimized working fluid considering environmental and economic factors.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an autocascade refrigeration system using the refrigerant miktures of R744 (carbon dioxide) and R134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane) as working fluids by simulation and experiment. Cycle simulation using a constant UA model in heat exchangers has been performed for R744/134a mixtures of the compositions in the range of from 10/90 to 30/70 by weight percentage. Variations of mass flow rate of refrigerant, compressor work, refrigeration capacity and COP with respect to mass fraction of R744/134a mixture were presented. Performance test has been executed in an autocascade refrigeration system by varying secondary fluid temperatures at evaporator and condenser inlets. Experimental results show similar trend with those from the simulation.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of an autocascade refrigeration system by simulation and experiment using refrigerant mixtures of R744/134a and R744/290 as working fluid. Variations of mass flow rate of refrigerant, compressor work refrigeration capacity and COP with respect to mass fraction of R744/134a and R744/290 mixture were presented under different operating conditions. Performance test has been executed by ASRAE standard. Experimental results show as the composition of R744 in the refrigerant mixture increases, heating and coling capacity are enhanced, but COP trends to decrease. Experimental results are compared with those from the simulation.
A revised VX cycle using ammonia/water as the working fluid is a cycle which is suitable to produce cooling utilizing low temperature hat sources. The cycle was analyzed numerically to investigate the effects of the design and operating conditions on the performance. It was shown that both COP and cooling capacity were significantly influenced by the performance of he rectifier. Insufficient UA of the rectifier reduced both ammonia mass fraction and mass flow rate of the vapor entering the condenser, which produced cooling effect in the evaporator. As the temperature and the mass flow rate of the heat source increased, both COP and exergetic efficiency decreased due to the irreversibilities produced in heat exchangers, but cooling capacity did not vary much. Cooling capacity increased significantly as the coolant temperature decreased, although COP and exergetic efficiency remained nearly constant.

The Reciprocating compressor are widely used in the refrigeration field for its simplicity in principle and high efficiency. In this work, we developed a mathematical model of a reciprocating compressor. The suction and discharge valves are modeled by the spring-mass-damper systems. The working fluid flow is derived from unsteady Bernoulli's equation. With the design parameters, the valve motions and pressure fluctuations are studied numerically and experimentally.
This paper is a continuation of the authors' previous work on spiral coil heat exchangers. In the present study, the heat transfer characteristics and the performance of a spirally coiled finned tube heat exchanger under wet-surface conditions are theoretically and experimentally investigated. The test section is a spiral-coil heat exchanger which consists of a steel shell and a spirally coiled tube unit. The spiral-coil unit consists of six layers of concentric spirally coiled finned tubes. Each tube is fabricated by bending a 9.6 mm diameter straight copper tube into a spiral-coil of four turns. The innermost and outermost diameters of each spiral-coil are 145.0 and 350.4 mm, respectively. Aluminium crimped spiral fins with thickness of 0.6 mm and outer diameter of 28.4 mm are placed around the tube. The edge of fin at the inner diameter is corrugated. Air and water are used as working fluids in shell side and tube side, respectively. The experiments are done under dehumidifying conditions. A mathematical model based on the conservation of mass and energy is developed to simulate the flow and heat transfer characteristics of working fluids flowing through the heat exchanger. The results obtained from the present model show reasonable agreement with the experimental data.
Since the energy demand for refrigeration and air-conditioning has greatly increased all over the world, thermally activated refrigeration cycle has attracted much attention. This study carries out a performance analysis of a vapor compression cycle (VCC) driven by organic Rankine cycle (ORC) utilizing low-temperature heat source in the form of sensible heat. The ORC is assumed to produce minimum net work which is required to drive the VCC without generating an excess electricity. Effects of important system parameters such as turbine inlet pressure, condensing temperature, and evaporating temperature on the system variables such as mass flow ratio, net work production, and coefficient of performance (COP) are thoroughly investigated. The effect of choice of working fluid on COP is also considered. Results show that net work production and COP increase with increasing turbine inlet pressure or decreasing condensing temperature. Out of the five kinds of organic fluids considered $C_4H_{10}$ gives a relatively high COP in the range of low turbine inlet pressure.
The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and the Kalina cycle system (KCS) are being considered as the most feasible and promising ways to recover the low-grade finite heat sources. This paper presents a comparative exergetical performance analysis for ORC and Kalina cycle using ammonia-water mixture as the working fluid for the recovery of low-grade heat. Effects of the system parameters such as working fluid selection, turbine inlet pressure, and mass fraction of ammonia on the exergetical performance are parametrically investigated. KCS gives lower lower exergy destruction ratio at evaporator and higher second-law efficiency than ORC. The maximum exergy efficiency of ORC is higher than KCS.
