It is a well-known phenomenon that, in the case of vibrations of an elastic body in a fluid such as water, the presence of the surrounding fluid has the effect of lowering the natural frequencies of the vibration as compared with those in air or vacuum on account of the increased inertia, i.e. added mass. In this report, defining the mass increase factor as the ratio of added mass to vibration mass of the body in air, the author investigated the mass increased factor of an elastic plate vibrating in the fluid. It is assumed that the edges of the plate are simply supported, and that the surrounding fluid is an infinite ideal one. For the problem formulation the elliptical cylindrical coordinate system is adopted, so that a rectangular plate may be represented by a sheet degenerated from an elliptical cylinder. By virtue of the coordinate system adopted, plates which are chordwisely finite and lengthwisely contineous could directly be treated, but plates which are chordwisely finite in both directions could not be treated directly. For the latter, hence, plates which are chordwisely finite and lengthwisely semi-finite are investigated as an appropriate approximation. Some examples of the mass increase factor are numerically calculated for the fundamental mode and modes of zero or one nodal line in each direction with the range of the aspect ratio from 1 to 10 or more.
Fed-batch fermentations with different feeding media were carried out in order to increase the productivity of invertase expression using a recombinant Saccharomyces cerevisiae containing plasmid pRB58. Two batch cultures showed the expression of the SUC2 gene at a low concentration of glucose, suggesting that glucose concentration could be used as a control variable in a fed-batch operation mode. In the fed-batch culture by feeding the basal medium, cell mass and specific invertase activity did not increase much as compared with the simple batch culture. A series of fed-batch cultures revealed that the sucrose-supplemented medium increased cell mass whereas the enriched medium did specific invertase activity. To capitalize on the synergism of the sucrose-supplemented medium and the enriched medium, the sucrose-supplemented enriched medium was used as a feeding medium. The fed-batch culture using this medium resulted in a 2.4-fold increase in cell mass and a 1.9-fold enhancement in specific invertase activity compared with those of the batch culture. The increase in cell mass and specific invertase activity led to a marked increase in total invertase activity, 250U/ml, which was 6.3 times higher than that of the batch culture.
Anthropometric and body compositional changes and the outcomes of the pregnancies of 90 healthy Korean women were investigated in a longitudinal study. Their weight increased from 51.3$\pm$5.9kg to 65.1$\pm$7.8kg during their pregnancies. The total weight gain was 13.8$\pm$4.5kg, and therefore, weekly weight gain was 340$\pm$110g during the entire period of the pregnancy. The weight gain was composed of approximately 50-60% fat mass and 40-50% fat-free mass. Skinfold thicknesses, both of triceps and subscapular, increased during the pregnancies. The fat mass calculated from skinfold thickness and that measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis went on increasing during the pregnancies. Although there was a considerable difference with respect to the fat mass observed using the three methods, fat mass gain was 5.0-6.1kg and fat-free mass gain was 4.0-5.3kg from the first trimester to the third trimester of pregnancies. There were significant correlations between maternal anthropometric parameters and indices of pregnancy outcomes. Especially, the infant's birth weight was associated with maternal pre-pregnancy weight and weight gains during the pregnancies. The infant's birth length was related to the maternal weight observed at term(p<0.05) and weight gain during the entire pregnancies (p<0.05) . Neither increase of fat mass nor fat-free mass affected the outcomes of pregnancy. These results show that maternal weight gain during pregnancy is led by increments of approximately above 50% fat mass. The fat mass increase seems to be larger in central areas than in subcutaneous areas. Maternal weight gain during pregnancy, especially during late pregnancy, is a factor affecting the birth weight and length of infant. On the basis of the body compositional changes, it can be predicted that the additional energy requirement for pregnancy in Korean women is more than 200-230 MJ (64,500-76,250kca1). The equations of motion for rotating contilever beams with a concentrated mass loated in an arbitrary position are derived. For the modeling of the concentrated mass the Dirac delta function is used for the mass density function. Parametric studies are performed with five dimensionless variables ; natural frequencies, angular velocity, hub radius, concentrated mass, and the mass location. The concentrated mass, whereverit may locate, lowers the natural frequencies of a stationaly beam. However, when the beam rotates, the natural frequencies(if they increase or decrease) are dictated by the location of the concentrated mass.

To understand the assembly of the galaxy population in clusters today, it is important to first understand preprocessing, the impact of environments prior to cluster infall. We use 15 cluster samples from YZiCS, a hydrodynamic cluster zoom-in simulation to determine the significance of preprocessing, and focus on the tidal mass loss of dark matter halos. We find ~48% of the cluster member halos were once satellites of another host. The preprocessed fraction depends on each cluster's recent mass growth history. Also, we find that the total mass loss is a clear function of the time spent in a host. However, two factors can increase the mass loss rate considerably. First, if the satellite mass is approaching the mass of its host. Second, when the halo suffers tidal mass loss at a higher redshift. Being in hosts before cluster infall enables halos to experience tidal mass loss for an extended period of time.
A control technique using mass-trapping was developed against thrips infesting hot peppers cultivating in greenhouses. It was essential to develop effective lure(s) attracting thrips for the control technique. Especially, mass-trapping using aggregation pheromone (AP) of the thrips was not much effective in open field cultivating hot peppers. This study aimed to develop a new lure to enhance the attractiveness of AP-based mass-trapping. In addition, this study was designed to investigate the decrease of attractiveness of the AP-based mass-trapping in the open field conditions. Methyl isonicotinate (MIN) as a new lure was assessed by the laboratory olfactometry and showed its attractiveness to thrips and its mixture effect with AP to attract the thrips. These results led us to test the AP+MIN mixture in the open field conditions cultivating hot peppers. The mixture significantly enhanced the mass-trapping efficacy in the open field conditions. Especially, the significant increase of the captured numbers was found in the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. Furthermore, the increase of the AP concentration in the mass-trapping significantly increased the captured numbers in F. occidentalis and other thrips occurring in the hot pepper field. This study demonstrated the difference in the AP-based mass-trapping efficacy of the thrips between greenhouse and open field conditions. It also showed the increase of mass-trapping efficacy by increasing AP concentration in the trap. Especially, this study proposes a high efficient mass-trapping technology by the addition of MIN to AP especially against F. occidentalis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of the Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy on middle-age women s obesity index. Methods: A total of 38 middle-age women were assigned to either a control or an intervention group. The intervention group received Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy three times a week for ten weeks. The two sample t-test was used to compare the body mass index, fat mass, and waist-to-hip ratio between the intervention (n=18) and the control group (n=20). Results: In both groups, body mass index did not change significantly following the intervention. The intervention group lost $1.00{\pm}1.10kg$ of fat mass (p=.00) and the decrease was significant between the intervention and control group (p=.00). Both groups had increase in waist-to-hip ratio, however, the increase was only significant for the control group (p=.00). Conclusion: The application of Koryo Hand Acupuncture Therapy influenced the change of fat mass, but not clinically significant. It may be useful to repeat the study and to examine other factors that may have interfered with the effectiveness of the intervention. The use of Koryo hand acupuncture therapy should be further studied.
To clarify the hydraulic and thermal characteristics of ice slurry which made from 6.5% ethylene glycol-water solution flow in the double tube and plate type heat exchanger, experimental studies were performed. The mass flux and ice fraction of ice slurry were varied from 800 to 3500 kg/$m^2s$(or 7 to 17 kg/min) and from 0 to 25%, respectively. Through the experiment, it was found that the measured pressure drop and heat transfer rate increase with the mass flux and ice fraction; however the effect of ice fraction appears not to be significant at high mass flux region. At the region of low mass flux, a sharp increase in the pressure drop and heat transfer rate were observed depends on mass flux.

We have analyzed H and $K_s$-band images of the Arches cluster obtained using the NIRC2 instrument on Keck with the laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system. With the help of the LGS AO system, we were able to obtain the deepest ever photometry for this cluster and its neighborhood, and derive the background-subtracted present-day mass function (PDMF) down to $1.3M_{\bigodot}$ for the 5"-9" annulus of the cluster. We find that the previously reported turnover at $6M_{\bigodot}$ is simply due to a local bump in the mass function (MF), and that the MF continues to increase down to our 50 % completeness limit ($1.3M_{\bigodot}$) with a power-law exponent of ${\Gamma}$ = -0.91 for the mass range of 1.3 < M/$M_{\bigodot}$ < 50. Our numerical calculations for the evolution of the Arches cluster show that the ${\Gamma}$ values for our annulus increase by 0.1-0.2 during the lifetime of the cluster, and thus suggest that the Arches cluster initially had ${\Gamma}$ of $-1.0{\sim}-1.1$, which is only slightly shallower than the Salpeter value.

The vibrational system of this study is consisted of a cantilever pipe conveying fluid, the moving masses upon it and an attached tip mass. The equation of motion is derived by using Lagrange equation. The influences of the velocity and the number of moving masses and the velocities of fluid flow in the pipe have been studied on the natural frequency of a cantilever pipe by numerical method. As the size and number of a moving mass increases, the natural frequency of cantilever pipe conveying fluid is decreased. When the first a moving mass Is located at the end of cantilever pipe, the increasing of the distance of moving masses make the natural frequency increase at first and third mode, but the frequency of second mode is decreased. The variation of natural frequency of the system is decreased due to increase of the number of a moving mass. The number and distance of moving masses effect more on the frequency of higher mode of vibration.
