A Study on the PM2.5 Source Characteristics Affecting the Seoul Area Using a Chemical Mass Balance Receptor Model (수용모델을 이용한 서울지역 미세입자 (PM2.5)에 영향을 미치는 배출원 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to study the $PM_{2.5}$ source characteristics affecting the Seoul area using a chemical mass balance (CMB) receptor model. This study was also to evaluate the $PM_{2.5}$ source profiles, which were directly measured and developed. Asian Dust Storm usually occurred in the spring, and very high $PM_{2.5}$ concentrations were observed in the fall among the sampling periods. So the ambient data collected in the spring and fall were evaluated. The CMB model results as well as the $PM_{2.5}$ source profiles were validated using the diagnostic categories, such as: source contribution estimate, t-statistic, R-square, Chi-square, and percent of total mass explained. In the spring months, the magnitude of $PM_{2.5}$ mass contributors was in the following order: Chinese aerosol $(31.7\%)>$ secondary aerosols ($22.3\%$: ammonium sulfate $13.4\%$ and ammonium nitrate $8.9\%)>$ vehicles ($16.1\%$: gasoline vehicle $1.4\%$ and diesel vehicles $14.7\%)>$biomass burning $(15.5\%)>$ geological material $(10.5\%)$. In the fall months, the general trend of the $PM_{2.5}$ mass contributors was the following: biomass burning $(31.1\%)>$ vehicles ($26.9\%$: gasoline vehicle $5.1\%$ and diesel vehicles $21.8\%)>$ secondary aerosols ($23.0\%$: ammonium sulfate $9.1\%$ and ammonium nitrate $13.9\%)>$ Chinese aerosol $(10.7\%)$. The results show that the $PM_{2.5}$ mass in the Seoul area was mainly affected by the Chinese area.

Preliminary Source Apportionment of Ambient VOCs Measured in Seoul Metropolitan Area by Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF를 이용한 수도권지역 VOCs의 배출원 추정)

  • The PAMS data collected at four sites in Seoul metropolitan area in 2004 were analyzed using the positive matrix factorization (PMF) technique, in order to identify the possible sources and estimate their contributions to ambient VOCs. Ten sources were then resolved at Jeongdong, Bulgwang, Yangpyeong, and Seokmo, including vehicle exhaust, LPG vehicle, petroleum evaporation, coating, solvent, asphalt, LNG, Industry & heating, open burning, and biogenic source. The PMF analysis results showed that vehicle exhaust commonly contributed the largest portion of the predicted total VOCs mass concentration, more than $30\%$ at four sites. The contribution of other resolved sources were significantly different according to the characteristics of site location. In the case of Jeongdong and bulgwang located in urban area, various anthropogenic sources such as coating, solvent, asphalt, residual LPG, and petroleum evaporation contributed about $40\%$ of total VOCs mass. On the other hand, at yangpyeong and Seokmo located in rural and remote area, the portion of these anthropogenic sources was reduced to less than $30\%$ and the contribution of natural sources including open burning and biogenic source clearly observed. These results were considerably corresponding to the emission inventory investigated in this region.

Source Profile of Road Dust for Statistical Apportionment Modeling in Seoul (통계 수용모델을 위한 서울시 도로변 화학성분 원인 프로파일)

  • Sources related to road dust is one of the biggest sources, which is responsible for a large portion of emission. In particular, PM2.5 is a potential cause for respiratory diseases, thus it should be managed and a mitigation plan using results of statistical apportionment modeling such as chemical mass balance needs to be established. Recently, identifying sources of PM2.5 and analyzing the contribution of the road dust through a contribution assessment is required. Therefore, this study provides the chemical source profiles of PM2.5 using IC, GC/MS, OCEC, and XRF for both paved sidewalk and paved roadway collected at seven different sampling sites. As a result, for paved sidewalk, $NH{_4}^+$ (70%), $NO{_3}^-$ (12%), $PO{_4}^-$ (9%), and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ (9%) have been analyzed in PM2.5 mass. Major molecular marker such as Si has been indicated as $12.0{\pm}3.4%$ and $13.6{\pm}6.9%$ for paved sidewalk and roadway, respectively. PAHs such as Fluoranthene, Pyrene, Chrysene, and 1,3,5-Triphenylbenzene are suggested as molecular markers for road dust.

Temporal Variations in Isotope Ratios and Concentrations of Nitrate-nitrogen in Groundwater as Affected by Chemical Fertilizer and Livestock Manure

  • Isotope ratio ($^{15}N/^{14}N$) and nitrate-nitrogen concentration in groundwater were measured to investigate the effect of chemical fertilizer and livestock manure on temporal variations in nitrate-nitrogen concentration and to estimate the contribution of fertilizer and manure to groundwater contamination by nitrate. Four study wells from a rural area in Kyonggi province were selected. One well was located on an upper site from a livestock feedlot, and the others were situated at lower sites from the feedlot. The ${\delta}^{15}N$ values were analyzed by a stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer (Micromass, VG Optima IRMS). Reproducibility of the method and precision of the mass spectrometer were below 1.0 and 0.1‰, respectively Even though study wells were located at the same area, nitrate-nitrogen concentrations and ${\delta}^{15}N$ values differed and fluctuated during the sampling period. The ${\delta}^{15}N$ values of well located at upper site from the feedlot were extremely variable (-1.48~20.80‰). The ranges of ${\delta}^{15}N$ value of three wells situated at lower sites from the feedlot were 11.83~20.73 (ave. 16.11), 8.90~11.73 (ave.11.01), and 5.29~12.73‰ (ave. 8.21‰) with increasing distance from the feedlot. The average values of contribution proportion of nitrogen derived from livestock manure to nitrate-nitrogen in groundwater were 79% for the well closet to the feedlot, 44% for the well most distant from the feedlot, and 56% for the well in between the two wells.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the young fashion which maintains a large share of fashion market emerged in the 1960s, its characteristics and what its influences on the contemporary fashion industry are. In particular, I am going to consider the significance of the young fashion by looking at the formation of niche market, the emergence of mass market for fashion, the expansion of aesthetic categories. we will be able to see the 60s young fashion of the young generation who emerged as new consumers in mass consumer culture exerted important influences on the contemporary fashion industry. First, the counterculture of young generation who rebeled against the uniformity of mass production helped the formation of new niche market. Second, the young fashion which pursued the lower prices for fashion made a big contribution to the popularization of fashion. The young generations tendency to demand new things and rapid change coincided with that of inexpensive popular fashion people can buy and change more easily than expensive high fashion. Lastly, the playful tendency of the young fashion expanded the aesthetic boundaries of the clothing, going beyond the uniformity of modernism with the emergency of diverse fashion materials - fabric and textiles - enable by technological development and the miniaturization of forms as revealed in mini skirt.

On the absolute maximum dynamic response of a beam subjected to a moving mass

  • Taking the mid-span/center-point of the structure as the reference point of capturing the maximum dynamic response is very customary in the available literature of the moving load problems. In this article, the absolute maximum dynamic response of an Euler-Bernoulli beam subjected to a moving mass is widely investigated for various boundary conditions of the base beam. The response of the beam is obtained by utilizing a robust numerical method so-called OPSEM (Orthonormal Polynomial Series Expansion Method). It is underlined that the absolute maximum dynamic response of the beam does not necessarily take place at the mid-span of the beam and thus the conventional analysis needs modifications. Therefore, a comprehensive parametric survey of the base beam absolute maximum dynamic response is represented in which the contribution of the velocity and weight of the moving inertial objects are scrutinized and compared to the conventional version (maximum at mid-span).

Source Identification and Estimation of Source Apportionment of Ambient PM2.5 at Western National Park Site in USA (미국 서부 국립공원 지역의 미국 서부 국립공원 지역의 PM2.5에 대한 오염원 확인 및 기여도 추정)

  • The objective of this study was to estimate the $PM_{2.5}$ source apportionment at the Pinnacles National Monument IMPROVE site in western coastal USA. The PMF was applied to identify the existing sources and apportion the $PM_{2.5}$ mass to each source. To analyze local source impacts from various wind directions, the NPR analysis was performed using source contribution results with the wind direction values measured at the site. Also, PSCF was applied to identify the locations by point sources relative to the back trajectories. A total of 1,634 samples were collected from March 1988 to May 2004 by IMPROVE sampler and 32 chemical species were analyzed by PIXE, PESA, XRF, IC, and TOR methods. The PMF modeling identified seven sources and the average mass was apportioned to gasoline vehicle, secondary sulfate, aged sea salt, secondary nitrate, wood/field burning, diesel emission, and soil, respectively. In this study, the average mass was apportioned to gasoline vehicle (33.0%), secondary sulfate (25.7%), aged sea salt (17.8%), and secondary nitrate (10.1%). Also, this study suggests the possible role for source apportionment study of $PM_{2.5}$ at similar areas such as wildness, national park, and coastal areas in Korea.

  • The evolution of the Galaxy is examined by the halo-disk model, using the time-dependent bimodal IMF and contraints such as cumulative metallicity distribution, differential metallicity distribution and PDMF of main sequence stars. The time scale of the Galactic halo formation is about 3Gyr during which the most of halo stars and metal abundance are formed and ${\sim}95%$ of the initial halo mass falls to the disk. The G-dwarf problem could be explained by the time-dependent bimodal IMF which is suppressed for low mass stars at the early phase (t < 1Gyr) of the disk evolution. However, the importance of this problem is much weakened by the Pagel's differential metallicity distribution which leads to less initial metal enrichment and many long-lived metal-poor stars with Z < $1/3Z_{\odot}$ The observational distribution of abundance ratios of C, N, O elements with respect to [Fe/H] could be reproduced by the halo-disk model, including the contribution of iron product by SNIs of intermediate mass stars. The initial enrichment of elements in the disk could be explained by the halo-disk model, resulting in the slight decrease and then the increase in the slopes of the [N/Fe]- and [C/Fe]-distributions with increasing [Fe/H] in the range of [Fe/H] < -1.

  • The correlation of isotope composition of Zr with the turnup and some heavy isotopes in PWR uranium dioxide fuel has been investigated. The total and partial ($^{235}$ U) burnup were determined by $^{148Nd}$ and by U and Pu mass spectrometric method, respectively. After separating Zr from the fuel samples, its isotope composition was measured by mass spectrometry. In addition, the quantities of the U and Pu in the spent fuel were determined by isotope di lution mass spectrometric method using $^{233}$ U and $^{242}$ Pu as spikes. The content of some heavy isotopes, $^{235}$ U, $^{239}$ Pu and $^{241}$ Pu, and the Pu Contribution to total turnup were expressed by the correlation with Zr isotope ratios, $^{91}$ Zr/$^{96}$ Zr and $^{93}$ Zr/$^{96}$ Zr The correlations by isotope compositions measured were compared wi th those calculated from ORIGEN2 code.

Statistical Properties of Flyby Encounters of Galaxies in Cosmological N-body Simulations

  • Using cosmological N-body simulations we investigate statistical properties of flyby encounters between halos in comparison with mergers. We classify halo pairs into two groups based on the total energy (E12); flybys (E12 > 0) and mergers (E12 < 0). By measuring the flyby and merger fractions, we assess their dependencies on redshift (0 < z < 4), halo mass (10.8 < log Mhalo/Msun < 13.0), and large-scale environment (from field to cluster). We find that the flyby and merger fractions similarly increase with redshift until z = 1, and that the flyby fraction at higher redshift (1 < z < 4) slightly decreases in contrast to the continuously increasing merger fraction. While the merger fraction has little or no dependence on the mass and environment, the flyby fraction correlates negatively with mass and positively with environment. The flyby fraction exceeds the merger fraction in filaments and clusters; even 10 times greater in the densest environment. Our results suggest that the flyby makes a substantial contribution to the observed pair fraction, thus heavily influencing galactic evolution across the cosmic time.
