  • Pyrolysis-mass spectrometry, incorporating an in situ thermal hydrolysis and methylation(THM) step, has been used to study biological materials for bacteria, toxin and virus. Newly developed pyrolyzer was used to decompose biological materials, and tetramethylammonium hydroxide(TMAH) was used as a methylation reagent. Chemical ionization(CI) using ethanol and ion trap mass spectrometer(ITMS) were used to ionize and analyze of pyrolysis components, respectively. Analytical characteristics of bacteria (including spore), virus and toxin were analyzed. Also acquisition and interpretation of mass spectra as biomarkers for classification/identification of biological material s were explained.

  • A well-designed location strategy is an integral and important part of corporate strategy for retail firms. The last five years witnessed major changes in retailing industry. A growing city population, rising income levels. and the emergence of suburb areas presented ratailers with new challenges. Mass discount merchandisers and supermarkets expanded rapidly, spreading from Seoul into smaller cities. The rapid increase of mass discount stores raised new concerns and gave rise to the need from a systematic approach to location analysis. In this paper, we present the mathematical background and characteristics of DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) model, and give a short case study where we apply the DEA model to compute the relative efficiency of 11 Korean mass discount merchandisers. Interpretation of the result is also provided.

  • Ibuprofen is one of the most popular analgesic and antipyretic drugs. An isotope dilution mass spectrometry method based on LC/MS was developed as a candidate reference method for the accurate determination of ibuprofen in pharmaceutical tablets. Isotope labelled ibuprofen, $ibuprofen-d_3$, was added as an internal standard into sample extracts. Ibuprofen and $ibuprofen-d_3$, was analysed by LC/MS in a selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode to detect ions at m/z 205 and 208, respectively. The repeatability and reproducibility of the developed ID-LC/MS method were tested for the validation and assessment of metrological quality of the method.

  • Producing what customers need with near mass production efficiency, or mass customization, has been a major trend in industry. Effective definition of customer requirements is a pre-requisite for realizing mass customization. The new method, called "Design by Customers", is proposed. The proposed method is an approach for companies to communicate to customers about what the company can offer, to find out customer needs, to assist customers in making choices and to negotiate for agreements. In this paper, the design and manufacturing capabilities in making company are represented in a Product Family Architecture. Adaptive Conjoint Analysis is then applied help customers assert their needs, defined variations from base product, visualize their options and assess alternatives. A power supplier of a electronic appliance is shown as an example to demonstrated the suggested method.ed method.

  • The initial mass functions (IMF) of 15 selected open clusters are investigated by making use of C-M diagrams and theoretical evolutionary tracks. Among 15 clusters 13 have peaks in their IMFs and it is thought to be not due to incomplete photometry but to intrinsic property. The mass where IMF peaks is about $2\;M_{\odot}$ and it is similar to that of the second peak in the IMF of nearby field stars. The mean slope of the IMF in the high mass part is $1.9{\pm}0.6$ with some variations among clusters. But there seems to be no correlation between the slope and physical parameters such as ages, diameters, and metal abundances.

  • A planet revolving around binary star system is a familiar system. Studies of these systems are important because they provide precise knowledge of planet formation and orbit evolution. In this study, a method to determine the evolution of an exoplanet revolving around a binary star system using different rates of stellar mass loss will be introduced. Using a hierarchical triple body system, in which the outer body can be moved with the center of mass of the inner binary star as a two-body problem, the long period evolution of the exoplanet orbit is determined depending on a Hamiltonian formulation. The model is simulated by numerical integrations of the Hamiltonian equations for the system over a long time. As a conclusion, the behavior of the planet orbital elements is quite affected by the rate of the mass loss from the accompanying binary star.

  • Survivability of the general purpose warhead during the target impact was studied. We first simulated the penetration phenomena and temporarily defined the survivability of the warhead at the impact situation. Next we launched the warhead projectiles by using Counter Mass Gun(CMG) system against the simulated specific steel target. The recovered warheads were carefully investigated and the penetration behaviors were analyzed. As a result the warhead can be hardened efficiently to enhance the survivability with the help of CMG test & analysis.

  • Isothiazolinone derivatives are widely used in consumer products as disinfectants or preservatives, but there are growing concerns about their impact on human health. Therefore, rapid screening of these biocides is very important for proper control and regulation of potentially hazardous substances. To this end, low-temperature plasma (LTP) ionization mass spectrometry (MS) was investigated to demonstrate its potential for direct and selective analysis of isothiazolinones from sprayed aerosol samples. Benzisothiazolinone (BIT) was clearly identified from a commercial fabric deodorant using LTP ionization MS and MS/MS. LTP allowed selective ionization of BIT directly from the simply sprayed aerosol sample and illustrated its potential for fast screening without sample pre-treatments. Selective nature of LTP ionization, on the other hands, implicates use of LTP ionization MS as a general screening method for specific groups of hazardous chemicals in commercial products.

  • Diazotized chitin(CHITN) as supports of immobilized enzyme, which was obtained by alkaline hydrolysed chitin with NaN3 and HCI was employed to produce CHITN-Gase with glutaraldehyde as bifunctional reagent. Activities of CHITN-Gase were determined with reaction of p-nitro-pheol-$\beta$-D-glucopyranoside(PNG) in plug flow reactor as a reference of CHITA-Gase. Their optimum temperature, pH, Km and Vmax, mass transfer coefficient (h), effctiveness factor(η)were plotted with variation of flow rate and H/D. Mass transfer coefficient(h) of those enzymes increased because of their flux, as flow rates were increased and controlled by reaction rate. Effectiveness factor(η) of both enzymes were nearly 1.0.

  • Flowmeter and oxygen sensors are listed in COVID-19 essential medical devices. This article reports a Teensy microcontroller-based Oxygen mass flow controller (MFC), core part of the oxygen respirator or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The developed MFC consisting of the microcontroller, MEMS flow sensor, and solenoid valve was able to accurately control 0 to 100 sccm of oxygen flow rate. The pressure of vacuum chamber increased proportionally to the flow rate (0.998 of Pearson correlation coefficient). The experimental results proved that the developed MFC exhibits comparable performance to a commercial MFC in accuracy, settling time, linearity with pressure, and repeatability of oxygen mass flow control. It is expected that this simple and cheap MFC is utilized for oxygen therapy against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2.
