Progressive collapse, which is referred to as the collapse of the entire building under local damages, is a common failure mode happened by earthquakes. The collapse process highly depends on the whole structural system. Since, asymmetry of the building plan leads to the local damage concentration; it may intensify the progressive collapse mechanism of asymmetric buildings. In this research the progressive collapse of regular and irregular 6-story RC ordinary moment resisting frame buildings are studied in the presence of the earthquake loads. Collapse process and collapse propagation are investigated using nonlinear time history analyses (NLTHA) in buildings with 5%, 15% and 25% mass asymmetry with respect to the number of collapsed hinges and story drifts criteria. Results show that increasing the value of mass eccentricity makes the asymmetric buildings become unstable earlier and in the early stages with lower number of the collapsed hinges. So, with increasing the mass eccentricity in building, instability and collapse of the entire building occurs earlier, with lower potential of the progressive collapse. It is also demonstrated that with increasing the mass asymmetry the decreasing trend of the number of collapsed beam and column hinges is approximately similar to the decreasing trend in the average story drifts of the mass centers and stiff edges. So, as an alternative to a much difficult-to-calculate local response parameter of the number of collapsed hinges, the story drift, as a global response parameter, measures the potential of progressive collapse more easily.
The present study has been conducted to investigate the fire combustion properties and fire behavior of an IEEE-383 qualified flame retardant cable. The reference reaction rate and reference temperature which are commonly used in pyrolysis model of fire propagation process was obtained by the thermo-gravimetric analysis of the cable component materials. The mass fraction of FR-PVC sheath abruptly decreased near temperature range of $250{\sim}260^{\circ}C$ and its maximum reaction rate was about $2.58{\times}10^{-3}$[1/s]. For the XLPE insulation of the cable, the temperature causing maximum mass fraction change was ranged about $380{\sim}390^{\circ}C$ and it has reached to the maximum reaction rate of $5.10{\times}10^{-3}$[1/s]. The flame retardant cable was burned by a pilot flame meker buner and the burning behavior of the cable was observed during the fire test. Heat release rate of the flame retardant cable was measured by a laboratory scale oxygen consumption calorimeter and the mass loss rate of the cable was calculated by the measured cable mass during the burning test. The representative value of the effective heat of combustion was evaluated by the total released energy integrated by the measured heat release rate and burned mass. This study can contribute to study the electric cable fire and provide the pyrolysis properties for the computational modeling.

We have confirmed the first case of mass mortality which occurred in the wild populations of larval toad, Bufo bufo gargarizans during 2007~2009 at Mangwel pond, which is a long time breeding site, and is located at the south eastern area in Daegu. We have investigated through microbiological tests the cause of mass decease of the larval toad, and detected numerous bacteria from the intestine by histological examines and cultures. The pathogen isolated from the infected larval toads has been identified as Aeromonas hydrophila, which is widely distributed in aquatic environment. However, this phenomenon of mass lethal pattern of the larval toad disappeared at the breeding pond after maintaining better water levels and low temperature in spring during breeding season in 2010. We propose that the high temperatures during the 2007~2009 breeding season resulted in lower water levels and drier conditions leading to explosive propagation of A. hydrophila in the pond which impacted the larval toad's immune function.
The non-linear static analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structures using the three-dimensional (3D) finite element method is a time-consuming and challenging task. Moreover, this type of analysis encounters numerical problems such as the lack of convergence of results in the stages of growth and propagation of cracks in the structure. The time integration analysis along with the mass scaling (MS) technique is usually used to overcome these limitations. Despite the use of this method in the 3D finite element analysis of RC structures, a comprehensive study has not been conducted so far to assess the effects of the MS method on the accuracy of results. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of the MS method in the non-linear quasi-static finite element analysis of RC structures. To this aim, different types of RC structures were simulated using the finite element approach based on the implicit time integration method and the mass scaling technique. The influences of effective parameters of the MS method (i.e., the allowable values of increase in the mass of the RC structure, the relationship between the duration of the applied load and fundamental vibration period of the RC structure, and the pattern of applied loads) on the accuracy of the simulated results were investigated. The accuracy of numerical simulation results has been evaluated through comparison with existing experimental data. The results of this study show that the achievement of accurate structural responses in the implicit time integration analyses using the MS method involves the appropriate selection of the effective parameters of the MS method.

A triple flame in a mixing layer was studied experimentally with concentration gradient and mean velocity by using a multi-slot burner, which can stabilize the lift-off flame. Flame stabilization condition, lift-off heights, and some other characteristics were examined for methane and propane flame within a range of very low concentration gradient. Pitot-tube and LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) were used for velocity. Mass spectroscopy and Rayleigh scattering signal were used for concentration gradients. Thermo-couples and SiC TFP(Thin Filament Pyrometer) were used for temperature. It was found that minimum values of the lift-off heights exist at a certain concentration gradient for constant mean velocity and this means that the propagation velocity has a maximum value. The scales of flame to the burner nozzle and intensity variation of the diffusion flame were suspected as the cause.

This study was to investigate characteristics for the pressure wave propagation and the maximum pressure near a rapid closure valve which was installed the end of multi piping network. The multi piping network consists of one inlet and three outlet with straight pipes. The diameter of the pipes including the valve was 100 mm, 80 mm, 80 mm respectively. The valve was rapidly closed with the instantaneous time which was 0.023s in the level for the water hammer. For the simulation, the influence of the pipe thickness and deformation due to pressure-wave-propagation was not considered. CFD was conducted under the following condition : the initial pressure was 1bar in the inlet and the mass flow rate was 7.83 kg/s in the outlet(the velocity in the pipe with 100 mm diameter was 1 m/s). As the valve have conditions that were status with and without fluid flow in the pipe after valve closing, the maximum pressure change and the frequency analysis were examined. As the results, the case that was status with fluid flow appeared the higher maximum pressure than another's, the maximum frequency band was about 10 ~ 11 Hz.

There are a number of ways to reduce the ground vibrations, one of which is by installing underground walls. Model tests for ground vibration have been conducted in recent years, but limited attention has been paid to underground wall which can reduce high vibrations. Up to date, only barriers have been actually installed in dry sand because of many unknown factors subsisting on the behavior of the ground. The characteristics of vibration sources, ground conditions and wall barriers have not been well understood yet, therefore centrifugal modeling was adopted to examine all these characteristics. This paper describes a ball dropping system, which can generate a pulse wave propagation through soil mass, and the test results show the effectiveness of underground wall barrier in reducing mechanical vibration.
Interface tracking of two phase is significant to analyze multi-phase phenomena. The VOF(Volume of Fluid) and level set are well known interface tracking method. However, they have limitations to solve compressible flow and incompressible flow at the same time. CIP(Cubic Interpolate Propagation) method is appropriate for considering compressible and incompressible flow at once by solving the governing equation which is divided up into advection and non-advection term. In this article, we analyze the droplet impingement according to various We number using improved CIP method which treats nonlinear term once more comparison with original CIP method. Furthermore, we compare spread radius after droplet impingement on the wall with the experimental data and original CIP method. The result using improved CIP method shows the better result of the experiments, comparison with result of original CIP method, and it reduces the mass conservation error which is generated in the numerical analysis comparison with original CIP method.
Plant regeneration of Pulsatilla koreana was achieved via adventitious shoot formation indirectly from callus and directly from adventitious root segments. For the callus induction from leaf or petiole explants, combination of 2,4- dichlorophenoxyaceticacid (2,4-D) with $2.22\;{\mu}M$ 6-benzyladenine (BA) was effective. Adventitious shoot induction from callus was enhanced by the combined treatment with $0.1\;{\mu}M$ polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) compared to cytokinin treatment alone. Adventitious roots were induced from the petiole segments on 1/2 MS medium with $4.93\;{\mu}M$ IBA. High frequency direct adventitious shoot formation from the segments of adventitious roots was achieved on medium with $4.92\;{\mu}M$ 2-isopentenyladenine (2-ip). Elongated shoots were rooted on half-strength MS medium containing $5.71\;{\mu}M$ indole acetic acid (IAA). Regenerated plantlets with well-developed shoots and roots were successfully transferred to soil. This in vitro propagation protocol might be useful for mass propagation as well as conservation of this plant.
A test facility to measure the performance of a KM(Kick Motor) is constructed, and prediction of blast wave propagation over the facility is performed to check if the safety of test personnel in MCC(Main Control Center) can be guaranteed even for the most severe explosion. Assuming that the initial explosion energy is contained in a sphere under the pressure of 500, 1000, 1500 psi, respectively, the radius of the sphere is determined for each pressure to set the mass of contained explosion gas to 35 kg. The material properties of explosion gas are set to be the ones of KM propellant combustion gas under normal condition. To reduce the effort and time required for a complex three-dimensional modeling, the flowfield is approximated to axismmetry. Calculations are performed for all three initial pressure conditions, and the analysis of the result is given for 1500 psi which is expected to be the worst case. The maximum pressure is 3.5 psig while the minimum pressure is -1.2 psig on the outer wall of MCC, and the maximum pressure difference between the inner and outer walls of protection wall amounts to 3.0 psi.
