It is a great interest to convert more energy in the heat source into the power and to improve the efficiency of power generating processes. Since the efficiency of power generating processes becomes poorer as the temperature of the source decreases, to use an ammonia-water mixture instead of water as working fluid is a possible way to improve the efficiency of the system. In this work performance of ammonia-water regenerative Rankine cycle is investigated for the purpose of extracting maximum power from low-temperature waste heat in the form of sensible energy. Special attention is paid to the effect of system parameters such as mass fraction of ammonia and turbine inlet pressure on the characteristics of system. Results show that the power output increases with the mass fraction of ammonia in the mixture, however workable range of the mass fraction becomes narrower as turbine inlet pressure increases and is able to reach 16.5kW per unit mass flow rate of source air at $180^{\circ}C$.
The relationship between exercise and hone mineral density (BMD) was investigated in 153 healthy women. The BMD of lumbar spine, femur(neck, ward's triangle, trochanter) and total body was determined by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry in a group subjects(65) aged 19-59 years who had been exercising(swimming or aerobic dancing) regularly for at least 2 years as well as in a similar group of nonexercising control subjects(88). Weight, height, total lean body mass(=weight-total fat body mass-bone mineral content), animal and meat Ca, Ca index, energy expenditure, BMD, PYD/Cr were significantly higher in the exercisers than the controls. There were significantly negative correlations between age, ALP and osteocalcin and BMD, but significantly positive correlations between weight, BMI, total fat body mass and total lean body mass and BMD. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that total lean body mass may be a better independent predictor to BMD than total fat body mass. The nutrient intakes were more closely related to BMD in the exercisers than the controls, but energy expenditure was more closely related to BMD in the controls than the exercisers Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that BMD was closely related to menopause, osteocalcin, age, weight in both groups but energy intake in the exercisers alone, energy expenditure in control alone. In premenopausal women, the exercisers had significantly greater BMD than the controls. But, in postmenopausal women, no significant difference between two groups was detected. When compared to BMD of the subjects with same age range to minimize the effect of age, aerobic dancing appears to be capable of exerting a positive effect on BMD in a group of subjects aged 19-44. However, no relationship of the swimming to BMD could be identified in a group of subjects aged 37-59. The results of this study suggest that the usefulness of exercisng appears to be significantly greater in preemenopausal women than postmenoparusal women and weight bearing activity, aerobic dancing is associated with increasing BMD at the weight bearing sites and could be beneficial in the prevention of bone loss. But the usefulness of swimming on bone should be further investgated.
Mass spectrometric analysis was carried out using multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) for the precise and accurate determination of the isotope ratios of ultratrace levels of uranium dissolved in 3% $HNO_3$. We used the certified reference material (CRM) 112-A at a trace level of 100 pg/mL for the uranium isotopic measurement. Multiple collectors were utilized for the simultaneous measurement of uranium isotopes to reduce the signal uncertainty due to variations in the ion beam intensity over time. Mass bias correction was applied to the measured U isotopes to improve the precision and accuracy. Furthermore, elemental standard solution with certified values of platinum, iridium, gold, and thallium dissolved in 3% $HNO_3$ were analyzed to investigate the formation rates of the polyatomic ions of $Ir^{40}$$Ar^+$, $Pt^{40}$$Ar^+$, $Tl^{40}$$Ar^+$, $Au^{40}$$Ar^+$ for the concentration range of 50-400 pg/mL. Those polyatomic ions have mass-to-charge ratios in the 230-245 m/z region that it would contribute to the increase of background intensity of uranium, thorium, plutonium, and americium isotopes. The effect of the polyatomic ion interference on uranium isotope measurement has been estimated.
Kinetic energy release in the fragmentation of tert-butylbenzene molecular ion was investigated using mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy spectrometry. Method to estimate kinetic energy release distribution (KERD) from experimental peak shape has been explained. Experimental KERD was in good agreement with the calculated result using phase space theory. Effect of dynamical constraint was found to be important.
It is critically important to identify unexpected loose parts in a nuclear reactor pressure vessel, since they may collide with and cause damage to internal structures. Mass estimation can provide key information regarding the kind as well as the location of loose parts. This study proposes a mass estimation method based on an artificial neural network (ANN), which can overcome several unresolved issues involved in other conventional methods. In the ANN model, input parameters are the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients of the auto-power spectrum density (APSD) of the measured impact acceleration signal. The performance of the proposed method is then evaluated through application to a large-sized plate and a 1/8-scaled mockup of a reactor pressure vessel. The results are compared with those obtained using a conventional method, the frequency ratio (FR) method. It is shown that the proposed method is capable of estimating the impact mass with 30% lower relative error than the FR method, thus improving the estimation performance.
A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model was developed in order to simulate the hydraulic characteristics of a granitic rock mass at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) Underground Research Tunnel (KURT). The model used a three-dimensional discrete fracture network (DFN), assuming a correlation between the length and aperture of the fractures, and a trapezoid flow path in the fractures. These assumptions that previous studies have not considered could make the developed model more practical and reasonable. The geologic and hydraulic data of the fractures were obtained in the rock mass at the KURT. Then, these data were applied to the developed fracture discrete network model. The model was applied in estimating the representative elementary volume (REV), the equivalent hydraulic conductivity tensors, and the amount of groundwater inflow into the tunnel. The developed discrete fracture network model can determine the REV size for the rock mass with respect to the hydraulic behavior and estimate the groundwater flow into the tunnel at the KURT. Therefore, the assumptions that the fracture length is correlated to the fracture aperture and the flow in a fracture occurs in a trapezoid shape appear to be effective in the DFN analysis used to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the fractured rock mass.

This study suggests a dynamic design process for deciding properly design parameters of a mass-spring type Wave Energy Converter (WEC) to achieve sufficient energy conversion from wave to power generator. The WEC mechanism, in this research, consists of a rigid sprung body, a platform, suspension springs and dampers. The rigid sprung body is supported on the platform via springs and dampers and vibrates translationally in the heave direction under wave excitation. At last the resulting heave motion of the sprung body is transmitted to rotating motion of the electric generator by rack and pinion, and transmission gears. For the purpose of vibration analysis, the WEC mechanism has been simply modelled as a mass-spring-damper system under harmonic base excitation. Its maximum displacement transmissibility and steady state response can be determined by using elementary vibration theory if the harmonic ocean wave data were provided. With the vibration analysis results, the suggested dynamic design process of WEC can determine all the design parameters of the WEC mechanism, such as sprung body mass, suspension spring constant, and damping coefficient that can give sufficient relative displacement transmissibility and the associated inertia moment to drive the electric generator and transmission gears.

Wireless sensor network is one of prospective methods for railway monitoring due to the long-term operation and low-maintenance performances. How to supply power to the wireless sensor nodes has drawn much attention recently. In railway monitoring, the idea of converting ambient vibration energy from vibration of railway track induced by passing trains to electric energy has made it a potential way for powering the wireless sensor nodes. In this paper, a bimorph cantilever piezoelectric energy harvester was designed based on a single degree-of-freedom model. Experimental test was also performed to validate the design. The first natural frequency of the bimorph piezoelectric energy harvester was decreased from 117.1 Hz to 65.2 Hz by adding 4 gram tip mass to the free end of the 8.6 gram energy harvester. In addition, the power generation of the piezoelectric energy harvester with 4 gram tip mass at resonant frequency was increased from 0.14 mW to 0.74 mW from $2.06m/s^2$ base excitation compared to stand-alone piezoelectric energy harvester without tip mass.

Suitable analytical procedures for the bulk analysis of ultra-trace amounts of uranium and plutonium have been developed using multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). The quantification and determination of the isotopic ratios of uranium and plutonium in three simulated swipe samples, a swipe blank, and a process blank were performed to validate the analytical performance. The analytical results for the simulated swipe samples were in good agreement with the certified values, based on the measurement quality goals for the analysis of bulk environmental samples recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
