"Hwaweon 1" was developed from an interspecific cross between Hwaseongbyeo and a wild species, Oryza rufipogon L. (IRGC 105491) based on marker-aided selection. The recurrent parent "Hwaseongbyeo" is a high grain quality cultivar with medium-maturity. Hwaweon 1 is nearly isogenic to Hwaseongbyeo except a small O. rufipogon introgression on chromosome 8 harboring the gene for grain weight. The preliminary and replicated yield trial was conducted at Chungnam National University in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The local adaptability test was carried out by the National Seed Management Office (NSMO) in 2007 and 2008. This cultivar was registered to NSMO with a cultivar designated as "Hwaweon 1". This cultivar averaged 89 cm in culm length and has a medium growth duration. This cultivar is resistant to stripe virus as the recurrent parent, Hwaseongbyeo. Milled rice of "Hwaweon 1" is translucent and the grain quality traits are comparable to those of the recurrent parent. The yield potential of "Hwaweon 1" in grain is about 7.43 MT/ha at the ordinary fertilizer level about 10% higher than that of Hwaseongbyeo mainly due to increase in grain weight.
Several major polyacetylene compounds were isolated from the petroleum-ether fraction of fresh Korean ginseng roots through solvent fractionation. partition and silica gel column chromatography. Further separation of acetylenic compounds was accomplished by bonded normal phase HPLC utilizing a moderately nonpolar microparticulate column. The preparative separation for the various spectral measurements was carried out by low pressure preparative liquid chromatography. The chemical structure of these polyacetylenes separated was determined by UV. IR/FTIR. $^{1}H$ NMR. mass spectral and elemental analysis. These are identified to be heptadeca-1-en-4.6-diyn-3.9.l0.-triol [1] heptadeca-1.9-dien-4.6-diyn-3-ol. heptadeca-1.8-dien-4.6-diyn-3.10-diol and the 4th was denatured polyacetylene. heptadeca-1.4-dien-6.8-diyn-3.10-diol. Two different p-substituted benzoates of panaxynol were synthesized for the determination of exciton chirality. The circular dichroism spectra in the UV region show that panaxynol p-bromobenzoate and p-dimethyl-aminobenzoate constitute negative exciton chirality [2]. Isolated major polyacetylene compounds were irradiated in aerated solution with 300 nm UV light to obtain the oxidized product at the allylic alcohol center to corresponding carbonyl compounds such as heptadeca-1-en-4.6-diyn-9.10-diol-3-one and heptadeca-1.9-dien-4.6-diyn-3-one. These photooxidation compounds have en-on-diyne chromophore and undergo nucleophilic addition reaction with methanol to yield ${\beta}-methoxy$ carbonyl compounds such as heptadeca-9-en-4.6-diyn-1-methoxy-3-one and heptadeca-4.6-diyn-1-methoxy-9.10-diol-3-one.
Three experiments were conducted to investigate effects of dietary energy and protein levels on performance of laying hens. A total of 360 hens each of 352-day old Manina Brown (Exp.1), 280-day old Brown Warren (Exp.2) or 3174ay old Brown Warren (Exp.3) was divided into 20 pens of 18 birds. Each pen was assigned to one of the four dietary treatments with 5 replications according to a 2${\times}$2 factorial design, consisting of all possible cominations of two levels of metabolizable energy (2,500 and 2,800 kcal/kg of diet) and two levels of crude Protein (13 and 16%). All hens were housed two birds per cage. Exp.1 and 2 were conducted for four weeks and hens were fed experimental diets ad libitum, and Exp.3 lasted two weeks and feed consumption was restricted to 130g/hen/day. In Exp.1 and 2, increasing either energy or protein level in the diet numberically improved egg production. However, in Exp. 3, where feed consumption was restricted, egg Production was affected significantly 〈0.05) by the energy levies and numerically by the protein levels. Neither protein nor energy level influenced egg weight in Exp. 1 and 2, but in Exp. 3 the higher level of energy improved egg weight numerically, In all three experiments increasing either protein or energy level increased egg mass. Higher levels of either protein and energy tended to decrease feed consumption and improve feed conversion rate numerically. It should also be noted that the higher level of energy improved egg mass produced per unit intake of protein and the higher level of Protein improved egg mass produced per unit intake of energy.
Purpose: The development of postnatal pneumothorax and its common causes and clinical aspects were studied to promote early diagnosis and proper management. Methods: A retrospective study of neonates who were hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit at Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital from 2001 to 2010 was performed. Term neonates were divided into a spontaneous pneumothorax group and a secondary pneumothorax group. The secondary group was divided into term and preterm groups. Results: Of 4,414 inpatients, 57 (1.3%) were diagnosed with pneumothorax. Of term newborn patients, 28 (80%) had a secondary pneumothorax, and seven (20%) had a spontaneous pneumothorax. No differences were observed for gender, birth weight, resuscitation, or duration of admission between the spontaneous and control groups. The duration of treatment with a thoracostomy (20 patients, 57%) was longer in the spontaneous group (5.4${\pm}$2.9 days vs. 2.7${\pm}$2.0 days) than that in the control group. Patients with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) developed a pneumothorax 22.8 hours after surfactant treatment, whereas patients with transient tachypnea of the newborn (TTN), pneumonia, and meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS) developed pneumothorax after 16.6 hours. Of 50 patients with a secondary pneumothorax, 19 (38%) had RDS, 11 (22%) had MAS, 7 (14%) had TTN, and six (12%) had pneumonia. Among term newborns, 42.9% were treated only with 100% oxygen. Among preterm newborns, 72.6% and 27.3% needed a thoracostomy or ventilator care, respectively. Conclusion: A pneumothorax is likely to develop when pulmonary disease occurs in neonates. Therefore, it is important to carefully identify pneumothorax and provide appropriate treatment.
As a scientific curiosity to understand the structure and the function of crops and experimental efforts to apply it to plant breeding, genetic maps have been constructed in various crops. Especially, in the case of Brassica crop, genetic mapping has been accelerated since genetic information of model plant $Arabidopsis$ was available. As a result, the whole $B.$$rapa$ genome (A genome) sequencing has recently been done. The genome sequences offer opportunities to develop molecular markers for genetic analysis in $Brassica$ crops. RFLP markers are widely used as the basis for genetic map construction, but detection system is inefficiency. The technical efficiency and analysis speed of the PCR-based markers become more preferable for many form of $Brassica$ genome study. The massive sequence informative markers such as SSR, SNP and InDels are also available to increase the density of markers for high-resolution genetic analysis. The high density maps are invaluable resources for QTLs analysis, marker assisted selection (MAS), map-based cloning and comparative analysis within $Brassica$ as well as related crop species. Additionally, the advents of new technology, next-generation technique, have served as a momentum for molecular breeding. Here we summarize genetic and genomic resources and suggest their applications for the molecular breeding in $Brassica$ crop.

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is one of the six greenhouse gases, and it is essential to reduce N2O by showing a global warming potential (GWP) equivalent to 310 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2). Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is a technology that converts ammonia into harmless N2 and H2O by using ammonia as a reducing agent to remove NOx, one of the air pollutants; the process also produces high denitrification efficiency. In this study, the Fe-BEA catalyst was steam-treated at 100 ℃ for 2 h before Fe ion exchange in the fixed bed reactor in order to investigate the effect of the steam-treated Fe-BEA catalyst on the NH3-SCR reaction. NH3-SCR reaction test of synthesized catalysts was performed at WHSV = 180 h-1, 370 to 400 ℃ in the fixed bed reactor. The Fe-BEA(100) catalyst steam-treated at 100 ℃ showed a somewhat higher activity than the Fe-BEA catalyst at 370 to 390 ℃. The catalysts were characterized by BET, ICP, NH3-TPD, H2-TPR, and 27Al MAS NMR in order to determine the cause affecting NH3-SCR activity. The H2-TPR result confirmed that the Fe-BEA(100) catalyst had a higher reduction of isolated Fe3+ than the Fe-BEA catalyst, and that the steam treatment increased the amount of isolated Fe3+ as an active species, thus increasing the activity.
Despite the utility of solid-state NMR, NMR studies of iron-bearing silicate glasses remain a challenge because the variations in the peak position and width with increasing iron content reflect both paramagnetic effect and iron-induced structural changes. Therefore, it is essential to elucidate the effect of temperature on the NMR signal for iron-bearing silicate glasses. Here, we report the $^{29}Si$ and $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR spectra for $(Mg_{0.95}Fe_{0.05})SiO_3$ and $Fe_2O_3$-bearing $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ (anorthite) glasses with varying spinning speed to interpret the NMR spectra for iron-bearing silicate glasses. The increase in the spinning speed results in an increase in the sample temperature. The current NMR results allow us to understand the origins of the changes in NMR signal with increasing iron content and to provide information on the dipolar interaction between nuclear spins. The $^{29}Si$ NMR spectra for $(Mg_{0.95}Fe_{0.05})SiO_3$ glass and $^{27}Al$ NMR spectra for $Fe_2O_3$-bearing $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ glasses show that the peak shape and position of iron-bearing glasses do not change with increasing spinning speed up to 30 kHz. These results suggest that the NMR signal in the Fe-bearing glasses may stem from the 'survived nuclear spins' beyond the cutoff radius from the Fe, not from the paramagnetic shift. Based on the current results, the observed apparent shifts toward lower frequency of Al peak for $Fe_2O_3$-bearing $CaAl_2Si_2O_8$ glasses with increasing $Fe_2O_3$ at all spinning speed (15 kHz to 30 kHz) indicate the increase in the fraction of ${Q^4}_{Al}$(nSi) with lower n (i.e., 1 or 2) with increasing $Fe_2O_3$ and the spatial proximity between Fe and ${Q^4}_{Al}$(nSi) with higher n (i.e., 3 or 4). The present results show that changes in the NMR signal for iron-bearing silicate glasses reflect the actual iron-induced structural changes. Thus, it is clear that the applications of solid-state NMR for iron-bearing silicate glasses hold strong promise for unraveling the atomic structure of natural silicate glasses.
Grapefruit seed extracts(GFSE) have some unknown compounds which exhibit the antibiotic activities aganist microorganisms including bacteria and fungi. We have examined the effects of GFSE on the growth of Enterobacter pyrinus which was isolated from necrotic lesions of pear trees. During the cultivation, the growth of the bacteria was strongly inhibited at the low concentration(0.01%, w/w) of GFSE. Hydrophobic fraction extracted from GFSE by mixed solvents (chloroform : methanol : water, 1 : 2 : 0.8, v/v/v) had components which inhibited the growth of bacteria. There was, however, no inhibitory effect of GFSE on the activities of several enzymes including hexokinase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase. $O-nitrophenyl-{\beta}-D-galactopyranoside(ONPG)$, the artificial substrate of ${\beta}-galactosidase$ was hydrolyzed in the presence of GFSE, indicating that the membrane was pertubated by the GFSE. From the results it was suggested that the antibiotic activity of GFSE is due to the change of membrane permeability of cell. GFSE was fractionated by high performance liquid chromatography equipped with $C_{18}$ reverse phase column. Among active fractions, three peaks were identified as 1-chloro-2-methyl-benzene (o-toluene), N,N-dimethyl-benzenemethaneamine, 1-[2-(2-ethylethoxy)ethoxy]-4- (1,1,3,3-tetramethyl)-bezene, respectively, while the other three remained unidentified.

This study investigates the change of chemical components, antioxidant and antimutagenic activity in Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer stems and leaves (GU) by the various processing methods, as follows: fresh (GU-1), dried under the shade (GU-2), blanched (GU-3), roasted 3 times (GU-4), roasted 4 times (GU-5). The components have been identified and quantified through the use of gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). At results, cis-1,3-dimethyl-2-methylenecyclohexaneat at 19.7 min and n-hexadecanoic acid at 21.5 min were detected in five kinds of extract. 3-O-Methyl-D-fructose at 17.8 min was observed in four extracts except in GU-1 and aminopyrazine at 19.8min was observed in four extracts except in GU-4. The total phenolics contents was high in GU-4(3.38 g/100 g). ABTS radical scavenging was high in GU-5($EC_{50}$, 0.57 ug) and DPPH radical scavenging was high in GU-4($EC_{50}$, 2.66 ug). The extracts of GU-3, GU-4, and GU-2 were most potent in anti-mutagenicity activity against 1-NP, Trip-P-1, and Trip-P-2, respectively. GU-3 and GU-4 also showed most potent effect of anti-mutagenicity on 2-AA and AFB1, respectively.
