  • Four phenylpropanoid glycosides and a monoterpene glycoside were isolated from the flower of Clerodendrum trichotomum. Structures of the isolated compounds were identified as acteoside (1), martynoside (2), leucosceptoside A (3), isoacteoside (4) and neohancoside A (5) by spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1-4 were isolated from the flower of C. trichotomum for the first time. Compound 5 was first obtained from genus Clerodendrum as well as family Verbenaceae. The antioxidant activity of compounds 1-5 were evaluated by the DPPH free radical scavenging assay. Compounds 1-4 exhibited strong antioxidant activity.

  • The butanol extract of paulownia tomentosa stem showed antibacterial activity against staphyl ococcus aureus (SG511, 285 and 503), Streptococcus pyogenes (A308 and A77) and Streptococcus farcium MD8b etc. The most active compound of the extractg was identified to be campneoside I, which had a minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of $150{\;}{\mu}g/ml$ against Strptococcus and Staphylococcus species. From such antibacterial activity, the methoxy group of campneoside I was posulated to be the essential element for the antibacterial activity.

  • Seven phenylpropanoid glycosides named acteoside (1), acteoside isomer (2), leucosceptoside A (3), plantainoside C (4), jionoside D (5), martynoside (6), and isomartynoside (7) were isolated from Clerodendron trichotomum. Compounds 1 and 2 showed potent inhibitory activities against HlV-1 integrase with $IC_{20}$ values of 7.8 ${\pm}$ 3.6 and 13.7 ${\pm}$ 6.0${\mu}\textrm{M}$, respectively.

  • Two triterpenoids, arjunolic acid (1), belleric acid (2), five phenylethanoids, martynoside (3), orobanchoside (4), 3,4-dihydroxyphenethylalcohol-6-O-caffeoyl-${\beta}$-$\text\tiny{D}$-glucoside (5), leucosceptoside B (6), lunariifolioside (7), four phenolic acids, ferulic acid (8), syringic acid (9), vanillic acid (10), 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (11), and one lignan, (+)-syringaresinol-${\beta}$-$\text\tiny{D}$-glucoside (12), were isolated from the roots of P. umbrosa. All isolated compounds were explored for their antioxidant potential in the DPPH and ABTS assays. In DPPH assay, compound 5 showed high antioxidant capacity. Compounds 3, 4, 6, and 7 displayed considerable antioxidant activities. In addition, compounds 5-7 exhibited potential antioxidant capacities in the ABTS assay.
