Recent development of ultrafine grained (UFG) low carbon steels by using equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and their room temperature tensile properties are reviewed, focusing on the strategies overcoming their inherent mechanical drawbacks. In addition to ferrite grain refinement, when proper post heat treatments are imposed, carbon atom dissolution from pearlitic cementite during ECAP can be utilized for microstructural modification such as uniform distribution of nano-sized cementite particles or microalloying element carbides inside UFG ferrite grains and fabrication of UFG ferrite/martensite dual phase steel. The utilization of nano-sized particles is effective on improving thermal stability of UFG low carbon ferrite/pearlite steel but less effective on improving its tensile properties. By contrast, UFG ferrite/martensite dual phase steel exhibits an excellent combination of ultrahigh strength, large uniform elongation and extensive strain hardenability.
For high performance and structural stability, application of high strength steel has continuously increased. However, the change of the base metal gives rise to problems with the accuracy management of the welded structure. It is attributed to the martensite phase transformation of the high strength low alloy steel weldment. The purpose of this study is to establish the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and residual stress for the HY-100 weldment. In order to do it, high speed quenching dilatometer tests were performed to define a coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) at the heating and cooling stage of HY-100 with various cooling rates. Uncoupled thermal-mechanical finite element(FE) models with CTE were proposed to evaluate the effect of the martensite phase transformation on transverse shrinkage and residual stresses at the weldment. FEA results were verified by comparing with experimental results. Based on the results of extensive FEA and experiments, the predictive equation of transverse shrinkage and longitudinal shrinkage force at the HY-100 weldment were formulated as the function of welding heat input/in-plane rigidity and welding heat input respectively.
The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy was investigated. Heat treatment of cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy was conducted by solution treatment at $950^{\circ}C$ for 30 min; this was followed by water quenching and then aging at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 to 1440 min. The highest hardness of the heat-treated specimens was obtained by solution treatment and subsequent aging for 5 min due to precipitates of fine ${\alpha}$ that formed from retained ${\beta}$ phase. The tensile strength of this alloy increased without dramatic decrease of the ductility due to microstructural refinement resulting from the decomposition of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite into fine ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases, and also due to the fine ${\alpha}$ phase formed from the retained ${\beta}$ phase by aging treatment for 5 min. In addition, this strengthening might be caused by the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, which is a strain-induced martensite transformation from the retained ${\beta}$ phase during deformation, and which occurs even after aging treatment at $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 min.
Microstructure and fracture behavior of a multi-phase low-density steel were investigated. After hot-rolling and heat treatment, the microstructure of low-density steel was composed of coarse ferrite grains and elongated bands which include second phases such as austenite, martensite and ${\kappa}$-carbide depending on holding time during isothermal heat treatment. After tensile test, microcracks were observed at martensite or ${\kappa}$-carbide interface in the elongated bands. Coarse ferrite grains showed cleavage fracture behavior regardless of second phase. The cleavage fracture of ferrite could be attributed to their coarse grain size and solute atoms that increase ductile-to-brittle transition temperature of ferrite. Despite of the tendency of cleavage fracture in coarse ferrite grains, a specimen having coarse spheroidized ${\kappa}$-carbide particles in the elongated bands showed high total elongation of 30%. Thus, the easiness of plastic deformation in the elongated band seems to play an important role in retardation of cleavage crack formation in coarse ferrite grains.

Effect of prior deformation on the sliding wear of the ultra-fine grained (UFG) ferrite-martensite dual phase (DP) steel was investigated. The UFG DP steel was fabricated by the ECAP and subsequent intercritical annealing. The steel was cold rolled before the wear test, and the effect of the prior deformation on the wear was examined. The wear tests were carried out at various loads against a bearing steel ball. The wear rate of the UFG DP steel that did not experience the prior deformation was higher than that of the coarse-grained (CG) DP steel, because of more severe surface shear deformation. The wear rate of the specimens with prior deformation was much higher than that of the specimen without prior deformation. The deformed CG DP specimen showed higher rate than the deformed UFG DP specimen, and the rate-variation of the CG DP steel was much bigger under the same test condition.
A set of $Fe_{1-x}Ni_{x}$ (x=0.10, 0.25, 0.30, 0.35, 0.50, 0.60, 0.75, 0.85) fine particles prepared by the gas evaporation technique was studied by $M\"{o}ssbauer$, XRD and other techniques. The XRD and $M\"{o}ssbauer$ patterns of the sample with x=0.10 ($Fe_{90}Ni_{10}$) were found to be exceptionally different, showing an austenite phase stability when the particles are quenched. This phase stability is quite different from that of the corresponding bulk alloy. Using binomial distrbution fits of the $M\"{o}ssbauer$ spectra of the particles in terms of nearest and next nearest neighbour configurations around the Fe atoms, an analysis of this phase stability is given. The changes in the relative intensities of the resulting magnetic sextets are used to determine the increase in martensite following the austenite-martensite transformation process. The stable austenite can, therefore, be determined. This stability may be related to the oxide surface layer and the small number of atoms of these fine particles.

In this investigation, the effect of microstructural factors on the impact energy was studied, using dual phase steels with soft phase of ferrite encapsulated by hard phase of martensite. It was found that the effect of the ferrite grain size on the impact energy decreases as the strength ratio increases, these results are due to the micro-brittlefracture facet by the difficulty of cleavage crack formation in the ferrite grain.
The microstructural changes of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-1Cu alloy have been studied during high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) at the range of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite of as-received alloy was changed to austenite single phase after HTGN treatment at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer, however the interior region that was not affected nitrogen permeation remained the structure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite. With raising the HTGN treatment temperature, the concentration and permeation depth of nitrogen, which is known as the austenite stabilizing element, were increased. Accordingly, the depth of austenite single phase region was increased. The outmost surface of HTGN treated alloy at $1000^{\circ}C$ appeared Cr nitride. And this was in good agreement with the thermodynamically calculated phase diagram. The grain growth was delayed after HTGN treatment temperature ranges of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ due to the grain boundary precipitates. For the HTGN treatment temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$, the fine grain region was shown at the near surface due to the grain boundary precipitates, however, owing to the depletion of grain boundary precipitates, coarse grain was appeared at the depth far from the surface. This depletion may come from the strong affinity between nitrogen and substitutional element of Al and Ti leading the diffusion of these elements from interior to surface. Because of the nitrogen dissolution at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer by HTGN treatment, the surface hardness was increased above 150 Hv compared to the interior region that was consisted with the mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite.
NiAl alloy powders were prepared by mechanical alloying method and bulk specimens were produced using hot isostatic pressing techniques. This study focused on the transformation behavior and properties of Ni-Al mechanically alloyed powders and bulk alloys. Transformation behavior was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), XRD and TEM. Particle size distribution and microstructures of mechanically alloyed powders were studied by particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscope (SEM). After 10 hours milling, XRB peak broadening appeared at the alloyed powders with compositions of Ni-36at%Al to 40at%Al. The NiAl and $Ni_3Al$ intermetallic compounds were formed after water quenching of solution treated powders and bulk samples at $1200^{\circ}C$, but the martensite phase was observed after liquid nitrogen quenching of solution treated powders. However, the formation of $Ni_3Al$ intermetallic compounds were not restricted by fast quenching into liquid nitrogen. It is considered to be caused by fast diffusion of atoms for the formation of stable $\beta$(NiAl) phase and $Ni_3Al$ due to nano sized grains during quenching. Amounts of martensite phase increased as the composition of aluminium component decreased in the Ni-Al alloy, which resulted in the increasing damping properties.
The shape memory effect in Ti-50.4at.%Ni alloy after solution treatment at 1273K for 2h and aged at 350, 450, $550^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 4, 10hrs had been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry measurement. It was found that ageing in the temperature range of $350^{\circ}C{\sim}550^{\cric}C$ induced complex transformation behavior, involving the R-phase and multiple-stage martensitic transformation. Usually aged Ni-rich NiTi alloys undergo martensitic transformation on cooling from high temperatures in two step : Austenite to R-phase and then R-phase to Martensite (normal behavior). In sample aged at $350^{\circ}C$ two distinct DSC peaks arised giving evidence of intermediate stages of martensite transformation. This results in the nucleation and growth of coherent $Ni_4Ti_3$-precipitate. These explain all features of the evolution of DSC charts during ageing including the number of distinct DS peaks and their positions.
