The effect of cold rolling on the microstructural evolution in 22Cr-0.2N micro-duplex stainless steel was investigated. The 22Cr-xNi-yMn-0.2N duplex stainless steel plates with various Ni and Mn contents were fabricated. The steels were vacuum induction melted and hot rolled, followed by annealing treatment at the temperature range of $1000-1100^{\circ}C$, in which both the austenite and ferrite phases were stable. The volume fraction of the ferrite phase depending on the alloy compositions of Ni and Mn increased with an increase in the annealing temperature. Grain growth in the ferrite phase occurred markedly after cold rolling followed by annealing, while fine recrystallised grains were still found in the austenite phase. A large number of martensite laths was found in the microstructure of cold rolled steels, which should be formed by strain-induced martensite from the austenite phase. The intersections of stacking faults were revealed by TEM observation. The volume fraction of the martensite phase increased with an increase of the reduction ratio by cold rolling.
The mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V can be improved by microstructural control through the heat treatment in ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ region. The heat treatment was carried out with a variety of heat treatment temperatures and holding times to find the optimized heat treatment conditions and it was analyzed by linking the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties. The part of ${\beta}$ phase with $10{\pm}2wt%$ vanadium was transformed into ${\alpha}^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ martensite phase after quenched, so the hardness and tensile properties were decreased below $900^{\circ}C$. The higher the heat treatment temperature is, the smaller is the vanadium-rich region, which leads to transformation into hcp ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite above $900^{\circ}C$. The hardness and tensile properties were improved due to the hard ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite. As the holding times were longer, the hardness and tensile properties decreased below $900^{\circ}C$ because of the softening effect by the grain growth. When varying the holding times above $900^{\circ}C$, the change of mechanical properties was slight because the softening effect of grain growth and the strengthening effect of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ phase were counteractive. Therefore, the best conditions of heat treatment, which is in the range of $920{\sim}960^{\circ}C$, 40 min, WQ, can effectively improve the mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V.

The effects of microstructure on the damping capacity and tensile properties of 316L stainless steel were investigated. Increasing the degree of cold working, the volume fraction of $\varepsilon-martensite$ decreased after rising to maximum value at specific level of cold working, the volume fraction of d-martensite slowly increased and then dramatically increased from the point of decreasing $\varepsilon-martensite$ volume fraction. Increasing the degree of cold working, the behnvior of damping capacity is similar to that of the $\varepsilon-martensite$. After the damping capacity showing the maximum value at about $20\%$ of cold rolling, damping capacity was decreased with the volume fraction of $\varepsilon-martensite$. Tensile strength was proportional to the volume fraction of d-martensite, and elongation steeply decreased in the range low volume fraction of a'-martensite, then slowly decreased in range the above $10\%$ volume fraction of d-martensite. The damping capacity and elongation is strongly controlled by the volume fraction of $\varepsilon$ martensite with liner relationship. However, the effect of the volume fraction of d-martensite and austenite phase on the damping capacity was not observed. Tensile strength was governed by the volume fraction of d-martensite.
The shape memory effect results from the martensite transfomation of each individual grain. Thus it is necessary to study the texture and its variation. In this study the change of texture during thermal cycling and it's effect on shape memory ability are investigated. The major component of the rolling texture in the parent phase is identified (001) [110], and minor components are (112) [110], (111) [112], {hkl}<100> fiber texture is developed at $45^{\circ}$ from rolling direction. In the case of martensite phase, it is estimated that the major component is (011) [100] and the minor components are (105) [501], (010) [101] and (100) [001]. According to thermal cycling. severity of texture, especially (001) [110] component in parent phase and (011) [100] component in martensite phase are increased. The shape memory ability is increased with increase of thermal cycles and also increased as the direction of specimen approach to $45^{\circ}$ from rolling direction. After first thermal cycling the temperature of transformation can be define clearly and Ms and As are raised by thermal cycling.

The effect of the second phase morphology on the fracture ductility of dual phase steel was studied by means of tensile tests carried out room temperature. In this case the second phase morphology is characterized by two kinds; one is the MEF microstructure in which martensite encapsulated islands of ferrite, the other is the FEM microstructure in which ferrite encapsulated islands of martensite. The fracture ductility is improved by variation of the second phase morphology, but is essentially uneffected in the range of high strength ratio (4.7). Also the variation of ductility is well understood according to the difficulty of cleavage crack formation of the ferrite grain and to the brittleness of the martensitic structure.
Ductile cast iron(DCI) with a multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) structures was produced by various special heat treatment. Intercritical heat treatment(I. C.), intermediate heat treatment(I. M.) and step quenching(S. Q.) were used to strengthen and toughen the fracture initiation sites such as graphite-marix interfaces and eutectic cell boundaries in DCI. The purpose of this study was to investigate of DCI by the special heat treatment. (I. C., I. M., and S. Q.) At a result, bainite nucleation rate at higher temperature was higher than that of at lower temperature, and shapes of bainite and martensite became bar /spheroidal type with increase of isothermal transformation time.
The microstructure and dilatation for 0.15C steels were investigated to define the phase transformation during the quenching and partitioning (Q&P) process. For the one step Q&P dilatation, the isothermal martensite/bainite transformation occurred because the holding temperature was between $M_s$ and $M_f$. The isothermally transformed martensite/bainite and the athermally transformed martensite were produced by a loss of retained austenite. As the holding time increased, new martensite-start ($M_s$) temperature produced from the final quenching process decreased due to the carbon partitioning from the martensite to the retained austenite. This was the direct evidence of increment for the retained austenite stability. For the two step Q&P dilatation, the isothermal bainitic transformation occurred because the partitioning temperature was larger than the $M_s$ and new $M_s$. The partitioning at $400^{\circ}C$ indicated the short incubation period for the bainite transformation than the $350^{\circ}C$ partitioning because the partitioning at $400^{\circ}C$ should acquire the larger thermal driving force for carbon partitioning than the $350^{\circ}C$ partitioning. A quick drop of $M_s$ and short period of bainite incubation for the $400^{\circ}C$ partitioning steel were also the direct evidence of significant effects of carbon partitioning on the stability of retained austenite.

Effect of V and Sb content on characteristics of ${\beta}\;to\;{\alpha}$ phase transformation in Zr-0.84Sn alloy has been studied using optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. As V content increased, the ${\beta}{\to}{\beta}+{\alpha}$ transformation temperature was lowered, thus allowing the width of $\alpha$-lath in air-cooled Zr-0.86Sn-0.40V alloy to be fine. The width of ${\alpha}$-lath in air-cooled Zr-0.84Sn-xSb, however, was rarely changed with Sb content. The ${\beta}\;to\;{\alpha}$ transformed microstructures of water-quenched Zr-0.84Sn, Zr-0.84Sn-0.10V and Zr-0.84Sn-0.19V alloys were mainly slipped martensite. On the other hand, those of wafter-quenched Zr-0.86Sn-0.40V and Zr-0.85Sn-0.05Sb alloys were predominantly twinned martensite. In case of water-quenched Zr-0.85Sn-0.12Sb and Zr-0.84Sn-0.17Sb alloys, basketweave structure was observed. The transition of slipped martensite to twinned martensite in Zr-0.84Sn-xV alloys and the transition of twinned martensite to basketweave structure in Zr-0.84Sn-xSb alloys were due to the decrease of $M_s$ temperature.
A small amount of misch metal and/or Zr was added as a dopant to 70.5wt----Cu-26wt----Zn-3.5wt----Al shape memory alloy in order to study the effect of grain refinement and heat treatments on the transformation behavior, stabilization of martensite, and shape memory ability. It was found that the addition of misch metal and Zr was very effective for reducing the grain size. The fracture mode has been changed from intergranular brittle fracture to ductile fracture with void formation and coalescence by the addition of misch metal and Zr. Aging of the ${\beta}$-phase decreases the $M_s$ temperature, but that of the martensite phase increases the $A_s$ temperature. The hysteresis of transformation temperature ${\Delta}T(A_s-M_s)$ has an increasing tendancy by grain refinement. The crystal structure of martensite was identified as monoclinic structure. As the grain size decreased, martensite stabilization more easily occured and the shape, memory ability has been reduced by the grain size refined.

Demand for new nondestructive evaluations is growing to detect tensile crack growth behavior to predict long term performance of materials and structure in aggressive environments, especially when they are in non-visible area. Acoustic emission technique is well suited to these problems and has drawn a keen interests because of its dynamic detection ability, extreme sensitivity and location of growing defects. In this study, we analysed acoustic emission signals obtained in tensile test of high strength fire resistance steel for frame structure with time frequency analysis methods. The results obtained are summaries as follows ; In the T and TN specimen consisting of ferrite and pearlite grains, most of acoustic emission events were produced near yield point, mainly due to the dislocation activities during the deformation. However, B specimen under $600^{\circ}C$ - 10min had a two peak which was attribute to the presence of martensite phase. The first peak is before yield point the second is after yield point. The sources of second acoustic emission peak were the debonding of martensite-martensite interface and the micro-cracking of brittle martensite phase. In $600^{\circ}C$-30min to $700^{\circ}C$-60min specimens, many signals were observed from area before yield point and counts were decreased after yield point.
