The tensile deformation and shape recovery behaviors were studied in Ni-Ti shape memory wires showing different transformation characteristics by annealing at $200{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. Both R phase ${\rightarrow}$ B19' martensitic transformation at lower temperature and B2 ${\rightarrow}$ R phase transformation at higher temperature occurred in the shape memory wires annealed at $200{\sim}500^{\circ}C$. Transformation temperature and heat flow of B19' martensite increase but those of R phase main almost constant even with increasing annealing temperature. In the case of wires annealed and then cooled to $20^{\circ}C$, plateau on stress-strain curves in tensile testing can be observed due to the collapse of R phase variants and the formation of deformation-induced B19' martensite. In the case of wires annealed and then cooled to $-196^{\circ}C$, however, plateau on stress-strain curves does not appear and stress increases steadily with increasing tensile deformation. Comparing shape recovery rate with cooling temperature after annealing, shape recovery rate of the wire cooled to $20^{\circ}C$ is higher than that of the wire cooled to $-196^{\circ}C$ after annealing, and maximum shape recovery rate of 95% appears in the wire annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ and then cooled to $20^{\circ}C$. $R_s$ and $R_f$ temperatures measured during shape recovery tests are higher than $A_s$ and $A_f$ temperatures measured by DSC tests even at the same annealing temperature.
For the good combination of high-temperature strength, toughness and creep property, $9-12\%$ chromium steels are often used for gas turbine compressors, steam turbine rotors, blade and casing. In this study, the correlation of microstructural evolution and mechanical properties was investigated fur the specimens heat-treated at 600, 650 and $700^{\circ}C$ for 1000, 3000 and 5000 hrs. The microstructure of as-received specimen was tempered martensite with a high dislocation density, small sub-grains and fine secondary phase such as $M_23C_6$. Aging for long-time at high temperature caused the growth of martensite lath and the decrease of dislocation density resulting in the decrease in strength. However, the evolution of secondary phases had influence on hardness, yield strength and impact property. In the group A specimen aged at $600^{\circ}C\;and\;650^{\circ}C$, Laves phase was observed. The Laves phase caused the increase of the hardness and the decrease of the impact property. In addition, the abrupt growth of secondary phases caused decrease of the impact property in both A and B group specimens.
Purpose: There is an ongoing search for a stent material that produces a reduced susceptibility artifact. This study evaluated the effect of manganese (Mn) content on the MRI susceptibility artifact of ferrous-manganese (Fe-Mn) alloys, and investigated the correlation between MRI findings and measurements of Fe-Mn microstructure on X-ray diffraction (XRD). Materials and Methods: Fe-Mn binary alloys were prepared with Mn contents varying from 10% to 35% by weight (i.e., 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, and 35%; designated as Fe-10Mn, Fe-15Mn, Fe-20Mn, Fe-25Mn, Fe-30Mn, and Fe-35Mn, respectively), and their microstructure was evaluated using XRD. Three-dimensional spoiled gradient echo sequences of cylindrical specimens were obtained in parallel and perpendicular to the static magnetic field (B0). In addition, T1-weighted spin echo, T2-weighted fast spin echo, and $T2^*$weighted gradient echo images were obtained. The size of the low-intensity area on MRI was measured for each of the Fe-Mn binary alloys prepared. Results: Three phases of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, ${\gamma}$-austenite, and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite were seen on XRD, and their composition changed from ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite to ${\gamma}$-austenite and/or ${\varepsilon}$-martensite, with increasing Mn content. The Fe-10Mn and Fe-15Mn specimens comprised ${\alpha}^{\prime}$-martensite, the Fe-20Mn and Fe-25Mn specimens comprised ${\gamma}+{\varepsilon}$ phases, and the Fe-30Mn and Fe-35Mn specimens exhibited a single ${\gamma}$ phase. The size of the low-intensity areas of Fe-Mn on MRI decreased relative to its microstructure on XRD with increasing Mn content. Conclusion: Based on these findings, proper conditioning of the Mn content in Fe-Mn alloys will improve its visibility on MR angiography, and a Mn content of more than 25% is recommended to reduce the magnetic susceptibility artifacts on MRI. A reduced artifact of Fe-Mn alloys on MRI is closely related to the paramagnetic constitution of ${\gamma}$-austenite and/or ${\varepsilon}$-martensite.
Not only difference of fatigue crack growth and propagation behavior resulted from the grain size, the hardness ratio and volume fraction in M.E.F. dual phase steel composed of martensite in hard phase and ferrite in soft phase, but also the effects of the plastic constraint were investigated by fracture mechanics and microstructural method. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The fatigue endurance of M.E.F. steel increases with decreasing the grain size, increasing the ratio of hardness and volume fraction. 2) The initiation of slip and crack occures faster as the stress level goes higher. These phenomena result from the plastic constraint effect of the second phase. 3) The crack propagation rate in the constant stress level is faster as the grain size gets larger, the ratio of hardness lower and volume fraction smaller.

The inherent strain method is known to be very efficient in predicting the deformation of steel plate by line heating. However, in the actual line heating process in shipyard, the rapid quenching changes the phase of steel. In this study, In order to consider additional effects under phase transformation, inherent strain regions were assumed to expand. Also, when calculating inherent strain, material properties of steel in heating and cooling are applied differently considering phase transformation. In this process, a new method which can reflect thermal volume expansion of martensite is suggested.8y the suggested method, it was possible to predict the plate deformations by line heating more precisely.

The effects of secondary phase morphology and carbon content on the plastic deformation of 0.2C-1.5Si-1.5mn TRIP(TRansformed Induced Plasticity) steel have been investigated at various annealing and bainitic transformation temperatures. The morphology of ferrite and secondary phases was controlled by the annealing temperature and the distribution of secondary phase was controlled by the bainitic transformation temperature. The secondary phase contributed to elongation and/or UTS depending on the ferrite morphology which determined deformation mode simple elongation or rotation of secondary phase along the tensile direction In case of the sample containing the granular type retained austenite the elongation was improved as carbon stabilized the austenite phase. If the film-shape retained austenite in acicular ferrite was dominant however UTS was enhanced as the transformed martensite was hardened by carbon.

In order to obtain the microstructure improving fatigue crack propagation resistance of steels, fatigue crack propagation behavior of martensite-ferrite dual phase steels is investigated in terms of crack deflection and crack closure. The results obtained are as follows; (1) .DELTA.K$_{th}$ and fatigue crack propagation resistance in low .DELTA.K region increases with increasing hardness of second phase. But the difference of this crack propagation resistance decreases with increasing .DELTA.D. (2) In low .DELTA.K region, crack closure increases with increasing hardness of second phase, when the materials have all the sam volume fractionof second phase, or when yield strengths are similar in all materials. (3) These crack closure can be explained by fracture surface roughness due to crack deflection.n.

In order to obtain the optimal estimation method of fracture toughness of dual phase steel in which martensitic phase encapsulated islands of ferritic phase, the stretched zone (SZ) method and the R-curve method of the JSME S 001 was discussed. The results obtained are as follows. (1) The $J_{IC}$ values estimated by the SZ method are overestimated as compared with those by the R-curve method. (2) The $J_{IC}$ by the R-curve method decreases with the increase of the ferrite grain size and the martensite hardness. (3) The overestimation of $J_{IC}$ by the SZ method is due to the continuous plastic blunting of ferrite after the formation of stable crack which affects the critical stretched zone width.

The effects of homogenization, hot-forging, and annealing condition on microstructure and hardness of a modified STD61 hot-work tool steel were investigated. The ingot specimen had a dendritic structure consisting of bainite and martensite. Spherical VC particles of approximately 50 nm and cuboidal (V,Ti)C particles of about 100 nm were observed in the ingot specimen. After homogenization, the dendritic structure was blurred, and the difference in hardness between martensite and bainite became narrow, resulting in the more homogeneous microstructure. Needle-shaped non-equilibrium $(Fe,Cr)_3C$ particles were additionally observed in the homogenized specimen. The hot-forged specimen had bainite single phase with spherical VC, cuboidal (V,Ti)C, and needle-shaped $(Fe,Cr)_3C$ particles. After annealing at $860^{\circ}C$, the microstructures of specimens were ferrite single phase with various carbides such as VC, $(Fe,Cr)_7C_3$, and $(Fe,Cr)_{23}C_6$ because of relatively slow cooling rates. The size of carbides in annealed specimens decreased with increasing cooling rate, resulting in the increase of hardness.
Microstructure and phase transformation of Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders produced by using attrition milling method were studied. Mixed powders of Ti-(50-X)Ni-XCu ($X=0{\sim}20$ at%) in composition range were mechanically alloyed for maximum 20 hours by using SUS 1/4" ball in argon atmosphere. Ball to powder ratio was 50: 1 and impeller speed was 350rpm. Mechanically alloyed with attrition millimg method. powder was heat treated at the temperature up to $850^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in the $10^{-6}$ torr vacuum. Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders have been fabricated by attrition milling method. and then phase transformation behaviours and microstructual properties of the alloy powders were investigated to assist in improving the the high damping capacity of Ti-Ni-Cu shape memory alloy powders. The results obtained are as follows: 1. After heat treating of fully mechanically alloyed powder at $850^{\circ}C$ for 1hour. most of the B2 and B 19' phases was formed and $TiNi_3$ were coexisted. 2. The B 19' martensite were formed in Ti-Ni-Cu alloy powders whose Cu-content is less than 5a/o. where as the B19 martensite in those whose Cu-content is more than 10at%. 3. The powders of as-milled Ti-Ni-Cu alloys whose Cu-contents is less than 5at% are amorphous. whereas those of as-milled Ti-Ni-Cu alloys whose Cu-content is more than 10at% are crystalline. This means that Cu addition tends to suppress amorphization of Ti-Ni alloy powders.
