The Performance Analysis of Container Terminals in Vietnam using DEA-Malmquist

  • Seaports play a vital role in the economic development of countries, especially for countries having long coastlines such as Vietnam Seaport industry in Vietnam has witnessed an impressive development in recent years. The national cargo throughput in the period 2013-2017 achieved a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.8%/year, higher than that of the world (5.1%). However, the differences in planning policies and infrastructure systems has led to the differences in port performance efficiency of regional ports. Therefore, it is necessary to have a general and accurate view of the picture of Vietnam's seaport. The objective of this study was to analyze the relative efficiencies of 26 Vietnam container terminals using traditional output-oriented CCR and BCC DEA model. Malmquist P roductivity Index (MP I) was also applied to evaluate changes in container terminals productivity over time.

  • 전 세계 물동량 둔화 및 항만 간 경쟁이 심화되는 가운데, 항만의 환경규제 강화 및 자동화 및 스마트화가 요구되면서 항만산업의 비용증가 요인들이 지속적으로 증가하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 항만산업의 주요 주체인 우리나라 컨테이너터미널 운영사의 비용자료를 직접 수집하였으며, 이를 통해 컨테이너터미널 운영사의 비용 구조적 특성을 분석하였다. 터미널 운영 규모별, 지역별, 부두 특성별 비용구조의 차이점을 살펴보고 그에 따른 시사점을 제시하였다.

  • This study predicts the future world seaborne trade volume with econometrics methods using 23-year time series data provided by Clarksons. For this purpose, this study uses simple regression analysis, exponential smoothing method and seemingly unrelated regression model (SUR Model). This study is meaningful in that it predicts worldwide total seaborne trade volume and seaborne traffic in four major items (container, bulk, crude oil, and LNG) from 2019 to 2023 as there are few prior studies that predict future seaborne traffic using recent data. It is expected that more useful references can be provided to trade related workers if the analysis period was increased and additional variables could be included in future studies.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic had substantial negative impacts and caused several disruptions to the global supply chain of the shipping industry. The key challenges identified in terms of maritime manpower are the Certificates of Competency (CoC) or the expiration and/or failure to complete refresher and/or revalidation courses, which directly hinder employment retention and lost opportunities at sea. To tackle this issue directly and swiftly, the creation of the APEC SEN Distance Learning Platform was suggested and approved by APEC as part of an official project. This paper introduces the APEC-wide accessible distance learning platform with the following key topics: the organisation and operation of the platform, the themes and content to be prioritised, the process of education, training, certification, and the ways to promote accreditation, mutual recognition on CoC, education and training videos by taking collaborative actions, and the development of content.

A Study of Building B2B EC Business Model for Shipping Industry Using Expert System

  • The use of the internet to facilitate commerce among companies promises vast benefits. Lots of e-marketplaces are building for several industries such as chemistry, airplane, and automobile industries. This study proposed new B2B EC business model for the shipping industry which concerns relatively massive fixed assets to be fully utilized. To be successful the proposed model gives participants to support useful information. To do this the expert system is constructed as the hybrid prediction system of neural network (NN) and memory based reasoning (MBR) with self-organizing map (SOM) and knowledge augmentaton technique using qualitative reasoning (QR). The expert system supports participants useful information coping with dynamic market environment. with this transportation companies are induced to participate in the proposed e-marketplace and helped for exchanges easily. Also participants would utilize their assets fully through B2B exchanges.

  • Under the competitive environment of shipping industry, the improvement of the quality of shipping service could be one of the most important factors to be considered in the recent shipping industry. However, there has been little study on the clear concept of the service quality in the shipping so far. The subject of this study is to define the concept of the service quality in the shipping by way of making investigation into the related precedent literatures studied. The quality of service is recognized in general as a degree of gap between the customer's expectation and the perception. Therefore the service quality of shipping could be measured by evaluating the gaps between shipper's expectation and performance of shipping service. If the determinants of the service quality in the shipping are proved, and the discrepancies of expectations and perception between the shipping company and the shipper could be clarified, such a result would be an useful help to establish marketing strategy.

  • Since 2009 of global financial crisis, shipbuilding industry has undergone hard times seriously. After such a long depression, the latest global shipping market index shows that the economic recovery of global shipbuilding market is underway. Especially, nations with enormous resources are going to increase their productivity or expanding their shipyards to accommodate a large amount of orders expected in the near future. However, few commercial projects have been carried out for the practical shipyard layout designs even though those can be good commercial opportunities for shipbuilding engineers. Shipbuilding starts with a shipyard construction with a large scale investment initially. Shipyard design and the equipment layout problem, which is directly linked to the productivity of ship production, is an important issue in the production planning of mass production of ships. In many cases, shipbuilding yard design has relied on the experience of the internal engineer, resulting in sporadic and poorly organized processes. Consequently, economic losses and the trial and error involved in such a design process are inevitable problems. The starting point of shipyard construction is to design a shipyard layout. Four kinds of engineering parts required for the shipyard layout design and construction. Those are civil engineering, building engineering, utility engineering and production layout engineering. Among these parts, production layout engineering is most important because its result is used as a foundation of the other engineering parts, and also, determines the shipyard capacity in the shipyard lifecycle. In this paper, the background of shipbuilding industry is explained in terms of engineering works for the recognition of the macro trend. Nextly, preliminary design methods and related case study is introduced briefly by referencing the previous research. Lastly, the designed work of layout design is validated using the computer simulation technology.

  • 최근 급격한 P&I 보험료의 인상은 해운원가에서 차지하는 비중이 점차 커지면서, 과거와 달리 선주들의 P&I 보험의 선택과 경쟁적인 보험료 확보를 위한 노력도 지속되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 P&I 보험에 대한 여러 측면에서의 서비스 품질과 그 결정요인을 실증적으로 분석하고 P&I 보험의 서비스 품질의 결정 요인들이 고객만족에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 파악하고자 하였다. 본 연구결과는 P&I Club의 선택기준 마련과 유지에 활용 가능할 것이며, P&I Club 측면에서는 P&I 보험서비스의 어떤 품질과 그 결정 요인들을 개선하여 기존 회원사의 유지와 신규회원사 확보 등 시장 점유율 확대에 활용할 수 있을 것인가에 관한 장기경영전략을 수립하는데 도움이 될 것이다.

  • 우리나라는 국토 면적에 비해 해안선이 길어 해양공간 및 연안지역의 개발 잠재력이 높으며 플로팅 건축물의 활용 가능성이 매우 크다. 또한 세계 최고 수준의 조선 및 건축기술을 가지고 있어 플로팅 건축물 관련 설계 및 시공기술을 체계적으로 확립한다면 국내 외시장에서 충분히 경쟁력을 갖출 수 있는 여건이 마련되어 있다. 본 연구는 플로팅 건축물의 본격적인 기술개발에 앞서 국내외 시장현황을 살펴보고 관련 산업동향을 파악하여 플로팅 건축물의 기술개발 및 산업화률 위한 기초자료를 확보하는데 그 목적이 있다.
