Maritime English vs Maritime English Communication

  • Success of communication at sea is directly linked with clear and complete delivery and receipt of the target message between interlocutors. It can be said that speakers' effective delivery of their intended message and listeners' precise decoding and accurate understanding are the keys to successful maritime communication. From this perspective, the scope of maritime English education and training needs to be reconceptualized and expanded into the area of communication itself, beyond the simple acquisition of, and familiarization with, IMO Standard Maritime Communication Phrases (SMCP). Therefore, in order to make learners' acquisition of marine communication knowledge more feasible, and the knowledge learned more practically applicable, training on effective and clear oral delivery should be also considered within the frame of maritime English education. Thus, critical training elements to realize this goal need to be suggested as guidelines. In this presentation, the theoretical background on this will be introduced in terms of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) and Lingua Franca Core (LFC), which are the current mainstream forms of English communication in the international business context. Based on this, six key training elements will be discussed; that is, speech rate, word groups, pauses, nuclear stresses, consonants (including consonant clusters), and vowels (specifically long and short vowels). Finally, the practical pedagogical methods of each element, and its actual application into a real ESP classroom, will be suggested.

  • There have been many accidents of passenger ships on the sea and they have caused a big loss of human lives. Maritime Safety Committee(MSC) of International Maritime Organization(IMO) made evacuation analysis of Ro-Ro passenger ships mandatory in order to save as many lives as possible at the time of accident. But this is a temporary regulation and HSC/IMO ties to introduce a performance-based regulation to improve the effect of regulation. Simulation-based evacuation analysis is the basis of performance-based regulation. In this paper, we performed a simulation-based evacuation analysis on a passenger ship, which is usually used in the plying between land and islands in Korea, with EXODUS system. Through inspecting the results from this analysis in more detail, we can make a proposal to improve the safety of passenger ship. Finally we describe the features of IMEX(Intelligent Model for Extrication Simulation), a new evacuation model being developed in KRISO.

Design of Multiband Maritime Network for Ships and its Applications

  • Nowadays, maritime communication systems need high data rate, reliability, and consistency in order to equivalently provide navigating ships with diverse multimedia services as in terrestrial communication systems. For this purpose, we conceptualize and design the maritime network for ships equipped with a multiband communication system which cost-effectively supports multimedia services according to several radiofrequency bands, such as HF, VHF, and satellite frequencies. We also introduce two service scenarios targeted for the maritime network; ship multimedia service (SMS) and real-time maritime logistics location tracking (RML2T). In addition, we specify related works according to three lower network layers (i.e., physical, data-link, and network layers) upon designing the network.

선박설계단계에서 손상안전성 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Damage Safety Assessment in Ship Design Stage)

  • Recently ship safety regulations are being reinforced to improve maritime safety and to prevent maritime pollution by International Maritime Organization. It means that the regulation is becoming more proactive rather than reactive. In the mean time, design philosophy is also moving from rule based design to performance and simulation based design. In this paper, a study on practical application of the damage safety assessment system is carried out. The damage stability and the survivability of a cargo ship that was designed based on current regulation is investigated using performance based design tools in order to improve the safety of the design and verify the performance of the developed damage safety assessment system. To do this, damage scenarios is established and the characteristics and geometry the cargo ship is modeled. A new design alternative is proposed with small change in the internal arrangement based on safety evaluation results of the current design.

  • In this paper, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) based management system is introduced to control effectively logistic supply items and machinery spare parts in a ship. To apply an RFID system under very harsh environment in a ship which is a steel-structured small area with lots of compartment, we measured reading distances and angles in open space, in an steel compartment, and an real ship separately in order to investigate the reliability between various tags and RFID.

An integrated method of flammable cloud size prediction for offshore platforms

  • Response Surface Method (RSM) has been widely used for flammable cloud size prediction as it can reduce computational intensity for further Explosion Risk Analysis (ERA) especially during the early design phase of offshore platforms. However, RSM encounters the overfitting problem under very limited simulations. In order to overcome the disadvantage of RSM, Bayesian Regularization Artificial Neural (BRANN)-based model has been recently developed and its robustness and efficiency have been widely verified. However, for ERA during the early design phase, there seems to be room to further reduce the computational intensity while ensuring the model's acceptable accuracy. This study aims to develop an integrated method, namely the combination of Center Composite Design (CCD) method with Bayesian Regularization Artificial Neural Network (BRANN), for flammable cloud size prediction. A case study with constant and transient leakages is conducted to illustrate the feasibility and advantage of this hybrid method. Additionally, the performance of CCD-BRANN is compared with that of RSM. It is concluded that the newly developed hybrid method is more robust and computational efficient for ERAs during early design phase.

ISAR 영상 기반 해상표적 식별을 위한 인공지능 연구 (An Artificial Intelligence Research for Maritime Targets Identification based on ISAR Images)

  • Artificial intelligence is driving the Fourth Industrial Revolution and is in the spotlight as a general-purpose technology. As the data collection from the battlefield increases rapidly, the need to us artificial intelligence is increasing in the military, but it is still in its early stages. In order to identify maritime targets, Republic of Korea navy acquires images by ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) of maritime patrol aircraft, and humans make out them. The radar image is displayed by synthesizing signals reflected from the target after radiating radar waves. In addition, day/night and all-weather observations are possible. In this study, an artificial intelligence is used to identify maritime targets based on radar images. Data of radar images of 24 maritime targets in Republic of Korea and North Korea acquired by ISAR were pre-processed, and an artificial intelligence algorithm(ResNet-50) was applied. The accuracy of maritime targets identification showed about 99%. Out of the 81 warship types, 75 types took less than 5 seconds, and 6 types took 15 to 163 seconds.

  • 연근해 어선 등 소형선박에 설치되는 항해통신어로기자재는 대외의존도가 높아 외산제품에 의존하고 있다. 국산화 관점에서 해외 제품수준의 국산화 기술개발이 진행되고 있으며, Track Record 확보 차원에서 전용 테스트베드를 제작하여 실증하고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 테스트베드 설계를 위한 기초연구를 통하여 테스트베드 형태 및 설계방안을 도출하고자 하였다.

Environment Change of Marine Transportation and Inter-related Development of Shipping and Shipbuilding Industries in Korea

  • Environment of marine transportation market is changing rapidly. Due to globalization of world economy, marine transportation of cargos, especially trade using container boxes, is increasing dramatically. Fierce competition in the global market of container transportation forces the shipping industry to seek the economy of scale to reduce transportation cost, and drives the merge and alliance of liner shipping companies. Mega-sized container ships, having capacity over 10,000 TEU, were introduced, and appeared recently, in order to reduce the unit transportation cost. Korean shipping and shipbuilding companies are competitive, and have considerable market share in the global market. Even though both industries are inter-connected through ships and have many common interests in order to enlarge the global market share, inter-relation between two industries is surprisingly insignificant. In this paper current issues in the process of environmental change of marine cargo transportation are reviewed, and inter-relation of shipping and shipbuilding industries is discussed. Suggestions for inter-related development of Korean shipping and shipbuilding industries are given, and means for mutually beneficial collaboration are suggested.

개선된 HRIC VOF 법에 의한 자유수면 유동해석 (Numerical Simulation of Free Surface Flow Using a Refined HRIC VOF Method)

  • In this paper, a VOF method called RHRIC (refined high resolution intertace capturing) is introduced for solving the motion of the free surface and applied to the simulation of the advection of rigid interiaces of different shapes and a 20 dam-break problem, which are typical benchmark test cases. The numerical results for the interface advection cases are compared to the analytic solutions, while the available experimental data and other numerical results of various free surface methods for the dam-break problem are provided for the validation of the proposed VOF method. The same simulations were also carried out using the original HRIC scheme and a modified HRIC scheme called MHRIC for comparison. Although the RHRIC uses a simple order scheme, a basis of the original HRIC scheme, lower than the third-order ULTIMATE-QUICKEST used by the MHRIC, it provides an improved accuracy over the two previous HRIC methods.
