A Maritime DGPS Reference Station Configuration Proposal for Operation Improvement

  • A maritime Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) reference station broadcasts correction information to users having a DGPS receiver so that the navigation performance can be improved. A maritime DGPS reference station consists of a reference station (RS) that generates and broadcasts correction information, an integrity monitor (IM) that monitors the integrity of correction information, and a control station (CS) that controls them. A maritime DGPS reference station is continuously operated for 24 hours, and thus improvement in the ease of operation is a major element that can improve the performance of the system. In this study, a configuration of a maritime DGPS reference station that can improve the ease of operation and a relevant protocol were proposed, and an example of the implementation of the proposed system was presented.

  • The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs is working on the construction of Nationwide DGPS(NDGPS) with connection to Maritime DGPS Reference Stations and if Chun-cheon Reference Station is to be completed in 2008, DGPS positioning information is available in the whole area of Republic of Korea. Therefore to promote the usage of DGPS surveying information, we measured and panalyzed the accuracy of DGPS. In real-time DGPS positioning accuracy were 0.42m of planar Root Mean Square(RMS) error in static survey and 0.48m of planar RMS error in dynamic survey. We went abreast with RTK comparison measurement. According to these results. DGPS positioning information cannot be applied directly to the GIS construction field, but GIS application fields, requiring the real-time positioning information. can take advantage of it in variable cases.

  • According to the recommendation of International Maritime Organization, the Ministry Of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MOMAF) of Korea provides the real time Differential Global Positioning System service using maritime radio beacon from 1999. Due to the benefit of DGPS service, the need of this system is increased from various user groups for acquiring the better accuracy and integrity. Therefore, MOMAF has extended their service to inland by installing the additional 6 DGPS stations. This nationwide DGPS service will be fully deployed at 2007. In addition to the extension of service area, MOMAF has a plan to upgrade their nationwide DGPS to High Accuracy Nationwide DGPS (HANDGPS). The planned HANDGPS service of Korea will be a kind of long range RTK or Wide Area RTK techniques to provide under 1m accuracy and start their service from 2009 using the various broadcasting and communication media like as radio beacon, Wibro, Digital Multimedia Broadcasting, High Speed Packet Data Access. The introduction of nationwide DGPS system of Korea and its evolution plan will be addressed in this paper. The research activities related with HANDGPS in Korea is also presented.

A Study on the DGPS Radiobeacon Propagation Measurement of Domestic Ferry Lines (우리나라 선박 항로구간의 DGPS 전파 특성에 관한 연구)

  • Starting with maritime DGPS base stations of Palmido, Ochongdo which have been operated since 1999, truly our nation has become the most powerful country possessed with total of 17 DGNSS base stations in the field of DGNSS operation infrastructure. This paper examines into the country's DGNSS services as measuring the service range of the maritime DGPS base stations in the domestic ferry lines which sections are from Jeju to Incheon, from Busan to Jeju, from Jeju to Nokdong, the propagation characteristics of the radio waves of 300 kHz bands on sea and land path. As a result of identifying the service range of the DGPS in the sea routes of the southern sea and the western sea, the measured results of the DGPS signals are confirmed more than 100 NM(recommended service range). It can be possible to practical use the position information, which is safe navigation and various marine traffic management systems. It will be useful an expansion of maritime DGPS reference station in the near future.

  • DGPS Reference Station the national infrastructure generates the DGPS correction information for Differential GPS. Currently, South Korea operates the software based DGPS reference station using the next generation DGPS architecture in order that upgrade the hardware based DGPS reference station. However the software based DGPS reference station proposed by USCG has not changed just a form of its structure but intimate architecture. Accordingly, It can't strengthen the advantages of software based architecture. In this paper, I will propose a new software architecture design that is integrated with DGPS reference station and integrity monitor. This architecture is more simple than existing one so can use the maritime DGPS reference station which is required more simple structure.

Propagation Analysis of DGPS Antenna for Radial Ground and Obstacle

  • The DGPS transmits the enhancement signal to GPS using the medium frequency band. The NDGPS service that covers the Korean peninsula has been started since 2009. The service area of ocean-based DGPS(maritime-DGPS) reference stations covers the 100NM, but land-based DGPS(land-DGPS) covers 80km service area less than that of maritime DGPS. The DGPS's antenna has the top-loaded monopole antenna type. Top-loaded monopoles are the logical antennas to be used in order to get a low profile antenna and a performance according to the broadcaster and communication needs. The antenna needs to get the ground plane with good conductivity characteristics and flat ground plane without obstacle near to the transmitting antenna. In this paper, the radiation characteristics of an equivalent MF antenna are analyzed in view points of the ground conductivity and the ground plane with obstacle near to the antenna.

  • In order to prepare for the DGNSS recapitalization and implementation of the functions for software based reference station and integrity monitor (RSIM) system, this paper proposes a design of integrity monitor functions of maritime differential GPS RSIM. The most critical functions of the integrity monitor (IM) are to generate and send flags to the reference station (RS) along with system feedback. Firstly, it presents the architecture of software based RSIM, and analyzes the performance standard of integrity monitor for maritime DGPS reference station This paper then designs the functions of integrity monitor for DGPS reference station based on the performance standard. Finally, this paper presents the results of performance analysis for the functionality of integrity monitor using the GNSS simulator. it discusses the study method and its application for the system implementation.

  • National Maritime PNT Office is operating 17 DGPS reference sites. Considering the relatively small size of South Korea, however, we thought that it is maintaining too many stations. For this reason, new algorithms were developed to effectively generate Pseudo-Range Corrections for the purpose of providing consistent DGPS accuracies throughout the country even with a minimum number of stations.

  • In this paper, the linearly interpolated PRC(Pseudo Range Correction) regenerating algorithm was applied to improve the DGPS(Differential Global Positioning System) positioning accuracy at user's spot by using the various PRC information obtained from multi-DGPS reference stations. The PRC information of each GPS satellite is not varying rapidly; it is possible to assume that the variation of PRC information of each GPS satellite is linear. So the linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm can be applied to improve the DGPS positioning accuracy at user's spot by using the various PRC information obtained from multi-DGPS reference stations. To test the performance of the linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm, maritime DGPS reference stations' PRC data was used in RTCM format. 11 maritime DGPS reference stations are in service providing DGPS information to public since 1999. Two set of 3 DGPS reference stations are selected to compare the performance of the linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm. The DGPS positioning accuracy was dramatically improved about 40%. Linearly interpolated PRC regenerating algorithm adopted multi-channel DGPS receiver will be developed in near future.

Evaluation of the kinematic positioning accuracy of the navigation terminal with terrestrial DMB-based DGPS service (지상파 DMB 기반 DGPS 서비스를 이용한 내비게이션 단말의 이동측위 정확도 평가)

  • 현재 국토해양부에서 전국을 대상으로 실시하고 있는 지상파 DMB 기반 DGPS 실험방송의 정확도를 PC기반 수신 시스템과 내비게이션 단말을 이용하여 평가하였다. 정확도 평가를 위한 지역은 인천 송도 신도시와 서울 반포지역으로, 두 지역에 측위 경로를 선정하여 이동측위를 실시하였으며 각각 GPS 단독측위와 DMB 기반 DGPS를 이용한 측위 결과를 비교하였다. 먼저 위치보정정보의 송수신을 위하여 개발된 PC 기반 수신 시스템을 이용한 정확도 평가 결과는 송도에서 GPS 단독측위의 경우 2.5m의 수평오차가 발생하였고, DMB 기반 DGPS는 1.5m의 수평오차가 발생하였다. 또한 반포지역에서는 GPS 단독에서 2.0m, DMB기반 DGPS에서는 0.8m 수평오차가 발생하였다. 앞서 PC 기반 수신 시스템을 통해 검증 된 알고리즘을 구현한 DMB 기반 DGPS 샘플 내비게이션 단말을 이용하여 동일한 방법으로 정확도를 평가하였고 본 논문에서 그 결과를 소개한다.
