The purpose of this study is to examine main variables of dysfunctional communication, which worsen marital conflicts in terms of marital interaction and to clarify the relative effects of such variables. The subjects were 295 married males and females, and collected data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 23.0 program. The main findings are as follows : First, the tendencies of related variables showed that the levels of spouses' perspective taking and routine marital responsiveness were higher for both males and females, while the levels of irrational belief for marital relations and dysfunctional communication were low. Second, an analysis of spouses' perspective taking, routine marital responsiveness, irrational belief in marital relations and correlations of dysfunctional communication showed that spouses' perspective taking and routine marital responsiveness for both males and females have negative correlations with dysfunctional communication. The higher spouses' perspective taking and routine marital responsiveness, the lower the level of irrational belief related to marital relations and the lower the level of dysfunctional communication. This study clarifies that spouses' perspective taking, routine marital responsiveness and irrational faith for marital relations influence marital dysfuctional communication and has an implication, in that the findings can be used as basic data for seeking methods to solve problems of couples who experience conflicts derived from dysfunctional communication.

This study examined the mediating effects of couple communication on self-differentiation and marital satisfaction among married women. The ANOVA, correlation and the multiple regression analysis were used to figure out the relationships and the mediating effects of those variables. The results revealed that self-differentiation was significantly related to marital satisfaction. Also, couple communication was revealed to be a partial and full mediator between self-differentiation and marital satisfaction. The results were as follows. First, there were differences in couple communication and marital satisfaction. Marital satisfaction showed differences according to socio-economic variables such as educational level, occupation, family income, and the years of married life. Educational level and family income made differences in couple's communication. However, socio-economic variables did not make any difference with regard to self-differentiation. Second, there was a significant correlation among all sub-factors for self-differentiation, whole self-differentiation, married couples' communication, and marital satisfaction. Third, the result shows that the mediating effect of couple communication between self-differentiation and marital satisfaction. Couple communication completely mediated the relationship between cognitive vs. emotional function, family projection, emotional cutoff, and marital satisfaction. It also partially mediated the relationship between family regression and marital satisfaction. In addition, there was a tendency to partially mediate the relationship between general self-differentiation and marital satisfaction. The results suggested that self-differentiation and couples communication should be considered together when explaining marital satisfaction among married women. Also, the results implied the importance of the increased self-differentiation and the better couple communication in women's marital satisfaction. Finally, this research suggested the necessity of counseling services to enhance the self-differentiation as well as couple communication programs for the marital satisfaction of women.
This study explores the relationships between the division of housework, perceived marital fairness, communication, and marital satisfaction in elderly households. Although the marital relationship is one of the most important factors affecting the quality of life, few studies have focused on marital quality, particularly in the context of older adults. Data were obtained from the 2nd National Korean Family Survey in 2010. The results based on a total of 410 elderly households with couples aged 60 and over indicate significant differences in housework participation between men and women. Women were responsible for most of the housework. According to the regression analysis, the division of housework, perceived marital fairness, and communication independently predicted marital satisfaction, but there were no significant relationships between sociodemographic factors and marital satisfaction. There were significant interactions between the division of housework, perceived marital fairness, and marital satisfaction through communication as a moderator of effects of the division of housework and perceived marital fairness on marital satisfaction. The higher the satisfaction with communication, the stronger the relationship between marital satisfaction and satisfaction with the division of housework was. On the other hand, the lower the satisfaction with communication, the greater the effect of perceived marital fairness on marital satisfaction was. These results suggest that the way in which elderly couples perceive their marital relationships and the level of their satisfaction in interacting with each other play important roles in enhancing their marital quality.

This study provides basic materials that assist in marital counselling and marital therapy intervention through its analysis of the effects of marital communication and marital intimacy on psychological well-being and its systematic focus on middle-aged married men and women of social interest and importance. The subjects of this study were married men and women, aged 40 to 59, living in the metropolitan areas of Seoul and Kyeonggi; the study excluded those who were divorced, bereaved or whose last child was in over high school, but included those who were separated or in a second marriage. A total of 396 people, 134 men and 262 women, were included in the study. The major findings of this study are as follows. First, middle-aged married men recorded higher levels of marital communication and marital intimacy than middle-aged married women. While women showed higher levels of depression than men, there was no difference between men and women in terms of overall life satisfaction. Second, there were differences in marital communication, marital intimacy, and psychological well-being among middle-aged married men and women according to background variables. Third, marital communication and marital intimacy were shown to affect the life satisfaction of both middle-aged married men and women. Of the two, marital communication had more the influence. Marital communication also had the biggest influence on levels of depression among both middle-aged married men and women.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between communication patterns and marital satisfaction of elderly men and women. The participants of this study were 206 elderly (60 years and older), and they were all recruited in Seoul. The major findings of this study are as follows: First, the communication patterns of elderly men and women were affected significantly by background variables, self-esteem, and personality style. Second, marital satisfaction was affected significantly by background variables, self-esteem, and personality style. Self-esteem was the major factor that had significant impact on the marital satisfaction for all respondents. Third, there was a gender difference in the impact of background variables, self-esteem, and communication pattern on marital satisfaction. For elderly men, the factors affecting marital satisfaction were, in decreasing order, constructive communication, destructive communication, self-esteem, and economic condition, whereas for elderly women, the factors were, in decreasing order, constructive communication, self-esteem and destructive communication.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of family-of-origin, personal and spousal characteristics, mediated by communication and problem-solving behavior, on marital quality and stability. On the basis of previous literature, the theoretical model was specified, estimated, and evaluated for adequacy of statistical fit for samples of 214 married women. Although the initial model was not supported by data, the revised model fitted the data adequately. Results of structural equation modeling indicated family-of-origin and communication behavior directly affected marital quality. However, the personal and spousal characteristics were linked with marital quality and stability only if they were mediated by communication and problemsolving behavior. Communication behavior was strongly related to marital quality and stability both directly and indirectly through problem-solving behavior. The model also showed marital quality can be an antecedent variable for marital stability. The findings of results is to generate more broad-minded thinking about how communication behavior, marital quality, and marital stability are interrelated.
