  • As a part of chemical study on the bioactive metabolites from marine organisms, we have investigated cytotoxicity using brine shrimp bioassay for each solvent fractions of the marine algae(12 species), marine sponges(3 species), coelenterates(2 species), echinoderms(4 species), marine molluscs(17 species), and ascidians(2 species), respectively. As the results, chloroform extract of Stichopus japonicus (LC$_{50}$ : 274 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), ethyl acetate extract of Anthocidaris crassispina(LC$_{50}$ : 121 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), n-butanol extract of Unda), ia Pinnatifida (LC$_{50}$ : 178 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml), and water extract of Thais clavigera (LC$_{50}$ : 61 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml) displayed the most significant cytotoxic activity against brine shrimp. Among the marine organisms tested, echinoderms and marine molluscs were thought to be the most active Phylums on screening of new bioactive compounds.

  • Two new marine sponges, Haliclona (Haliclona) tonggumiensis n. sp. and H. (Reniera) sinyeoensis n. sp., in the family Chalinidae were collected from Ulleungdo Island and Gageodo Island, Korea from 2007 to 2009. Haliclona (Haliclona) tonggumiensis n. sp. is similar to H. (H.) simulans (Johnston, 1842) in shape, but the former differs in its ectosomal skeleton structure and spicules' shape and size. The ectosomal skeleton of H. (H.) tonggumiensis n. sp. is absent, but that of H. (H.) simulans is very regularly arranged, and has tangential reticulation with oxea. The spicule shape of H. (H.) tonggumiensis n. sp. is slender, but that of H. (H.) simulans is short and cigar-shape. The new species have two sizes of oxea, but H. (H.) simulans has one size of oxea. Haliclona (Reniera) sinyeoensis n. sp. resembles H. (R.) tubifera (George and Wilson, 1919) in the growth form and choanosomal skeleton structure. However, the new species has two kinds of oxea in size, but H. (R.) tubifera has only one size.

  • Marine sponges have been a remarkably rich source of pharmacologically active and structurally diverse natural products. As a part of our continuing search for novel secondary metabolites of biomedical importance from marine invertebrate, we encountered the sponge Lipastrotethya sp. from Chuuk, Micronesia. The crude organic extract of this animal exhibited considerable cytotoxicity against the K562 cell line. Guided by the $^1H$ NMR analysis, flash chromatography of the crude extract followed by HPLC yielded a new triterpene glycoside, along with ten known saponins of the sarasinoside class. The structure of this new compound was determined by combined spectroscopic methods such as COSY, HSQC and HMBC experiment. Among these metabolites, six compounds exhibited moderate cytotoxicity against ACHN, MDA-MB-231, NCI-H23 and NUGC-3 cell lines.

  • Two sponges, Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) and Stryphnus sollasi n. sp., were collected from depth of 24-30 m at Jeju-do Island and Chuja-do Island by SCUBA diving from July 2003 to June 2010. The new species Stryphnus sollasi n. sp is similar with Stryphnus niger Sollas, 1886 in the composition of spicules, however they differ in colour and spicule size. This new species has smaller oxeas and larger oxyasters than those of S. niger. This new species has two size categories of oxyaster but S. niger has one size category of oxyaster. The colour of S. sollasi n. sp is white, but the latter puce black. Stelletta subtilis (Sollas, 1886) is first recorded in Korean fauna.

  • Two new marine sponges in the family Halichondriidae, Halichondria gageoenesis n. sp. and Halichondria muanensis n. sp. are collected from Gageodo Island and Yongjeong-ri, Hyeongyeong-myeon, Muan-gun, Korea during 2006-2007. H. gageoenesis n. sp. is similar to H. oshoro(Tanita, 1961) in type of spicule, but is different from the latter in growth form and size of spicule. The oxea of the new species is larger than H. oshoro's. The growth form of H. gageoenesis n. sp. is thick and consists of encrusting with numerous erect hollow cylindrical tubes, but H. oshoro is of massive form. H. muanensis n. sp is similar to H. retiderma(Dendy, 1921) in type of spicule and choanosomal skeleton, but it is different from the latter in growth form and size of spicule. The oxea is smaller than that of H. retiderma. The growth form is thick and consists of encrusting, with numerous erect hollow cylindrical tubes, compared with the massive lobose of H. retiderma.
