It was found that 14 coastal habitats in South Korea have comparetively natural vegetation. The habitats were classified into three types - intertidal flats, sand dunes, and estuaries. There were four intertidal flats, five sand dunes and five estuaries. Except for Cynodon dactylon and Tetragonia tetragonoides, all of the main halophytes and sand dune plants were found in the habitats. These two species were mainly distributed on the southern coast. This study identified coastal vegetation, such as pure stands of Suaeda japonica on intertidal flats, mixed halophyte communities around the high-water mark, pure stands of Vitex rotundifolia on stable sand dunes, mixed communities dominated by Carex kobomugi on unstable sand dunes, and pure stands of Phragmites communis in estuaries. The types of coastal vegetation may depend on sediment types, the inundation time of seawater and the stability of sediments.
The biologically active compounds derived from different natural organisms such as animals, plants, and microorganisms like algae, fungi, bacteria and merine organisms. These natural compounds possess diverse biological activities like anthelmintic, antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antiprotozoal, antituberculosis, and antiviral activities. These biological active compounds were acted by variety of molecular targets and thus may potentially contribute to several pharmacological classes. The synthesis of natural products and their analogues provides effect of structural modifications on the parent compounds which may be useful in the discovery of potential new drug molecules with different biological activities. Natural organisms have developed complex chemical defense systems by repelling or killing predators, such as insects, microorganisms, animals etc. These defense systems have the ability to produce large numbers of diverse compounds which can be used as new drugs. Thus, research on natural products for novel therapeutic agents with broad spectrum activities and will continue to provide important new drug molecules.
This study presents the wave run-up height and depression depth around offshore cylindrical structures according to the wave period. The present study employs the volume of fluid method with the realizable turbulence model based on a commercial computational fluid dynamics software called the "STAR-CCM+" to simulate a 3D incompressible viscous two-phase turbulent flow. The present results for the wave run-up height and depression depth with regard to the wave period are compared with those of the relevant previous experimental and numerical studies.
Coastal vegetation consists of rooted flowering marine plants that provide a variety of ecosystem services to the coastal areas they colonize. The attenuation of currents and waves and sediment stabilization are often listed among these services. From this point of view, artificial seaweed is an effective method of controlling sea bed sediment and stabilization without damaging the landscape or the stability of the coastline. A series of hydraulic experiments were performed in a wave channel with regular and irregular waves to examine the effect of artificial seaweed in relation to scouring and beach erosion prevention. Based on the results of these experiments, the coastal vegetation model is efficient against scouring and beach erosion.

Helidecks are vital structures that act as a last exit in an emergency. They transport people and goods to and from ships and offshore plants. When designing the structure of a helideck, it is necessary to comply with loading conditions and design parameters specified in existing professional design standards and regulations. In the present study, finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted with regard to a steel helideck mounted on the upper deck of a ship considering the emergency landing of the helicopter. The superstructure and substructure were designed, and the influence of various design parameters was analyzed on the basis of the FEA results.

Burns can be caused by fire, chemicals, heated object and fluids. Distinguishing a minor burn from a more serious burn involves determining the degree of damage to the tissues of the body. Algin is known as natural polymer marine plants, we prepared the official burn ointment which is made by Algin. This burn ointment was covered on the skin wound of artificial burned and their effect of healing was investigated by the evaluation of histological and hematological change as a function of time. The result of rats test showed that burn ointments made from Algin was effective in formation of the new tissue and reduction of inflammation.
The structure of phytoplankton community was studied for one year round at 6 stations in the Beopsu Marsh, Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea. One hundred seventy-eight taxa (69 taxa belonging to Chlorophyta, 55 taxa to Bacillariophyta, 33 taxa to Cyanophyta, 15 taxa to Euglenophyta, 2 taxa to Rhodophyta, 2 taxa to Dinophyta and 1 taxon to Xanthophyta) were observed. Phytoplankton bloom occurred at the staions 2, 3 and 4 where waters were polluted by sewage and treated water of purification plants from the vicinity. The species diversity index of phytoplankton was the lowest (0.66) in November at the station 3, which the station showed the most eutrophic water due to the diverse pollutants from surroundings of the marsh. For the whole seasons, Fragilaria sp. and Euglena sp. appeared in pollutant water at the station 3, while Cyclotella sp. and Pinnularia sp. inhabited in relatively clean water at the station 5. To reserve the natural treasure, the wetland should be more specially managed by a local governing institution.

As seafood processing by-products, enormous seafood processing waste waters (SPWWs) are produced at most seafood processing plants, but management of these waste waters are becoming great burden at small capacity processing plant. Hence, almost of them have been discarded without suitable application methods. And these SPWWS might causes of marine environmental pollution and waste in potential food resources. (omitted)
Attempt was made to identify potential pollutants in Korean Sean and to assess their environmental qualities. Existing pollution data for these Seas so scarce that environmental quality assessment was not possible. However, numerous pollutants were identified. Among them, heat and radioactivity from electric power plants, organic wastes from ocean dumping and land based sources, and accidentally spilled oils are suspected to be of most concern.

In order to provide the basic data required for setting up the proper strategies to minimize the future marine pollution in the vicinity sea area of the Geoje Island, the general water quality parameters and dye diffusion experiment were carried out from January to March, 1983. Although TSS and COD level in the investigated sea area showed still slightly lower than the area of Seaside Industrial Complex Zones, seriously increasing due to the construction of heavy industrial plants. Dissolved oxygen showed more than 8 ppm, and inferred still enough for the reservation of the investigated sea area. The dye patches moved south-eastward with forming an elliptical shape and then turned slowly to the area of Kujora during flood tide, and it moved northwestward and then blocked the entrance of Jangseungpo during ebb tide, The diffusibility in the area may be assessed to be quite better than other coastal areas.
