There is a growing worldwide interest in the potential of marine biomass as an environmentally friendly and economically sustainable resource. Due to the great lack of comprehensive information about domestic seaweed resources, this study aimed to analyze the existing literature on the production and types of domestic seaweed species. Based on this data the possibilities of industrial use of domestic seaweed for the production of biofuels and bioplastics had been assessed. Our review took into account the seaweed species on domestic coasts as well as the species currently in great production via seaweed farming. Due to their wide distribution, their status as farmed crops, and the likelihood of securing their reliable supply, Codium fragile, Hizikia fuciformis, and Gelidium amansii were deemed to be the most appropriate candidates for domestic industrial use. The industrial potential of seaweed biomass was also explored by comparing the predicted amount of biomass necessary to replace current gasoline and plastics use with currently available farming space. The results of our study imply that once a steady and adequate supply of the proper kinds of seaweed can be secured through seaweed farming, there is a great potential for the development of new seaweed-based biofuels and bioplastics industries in Korea.
Hydrodynamic condition can be used to predict particle movement within water column and the results used to optimize environmental conditions for effective site selection, setting of environmental quality standard, waste dispersion, and pathogen transfer. To predict the extent of movement of particle from land, 3D hydrodynamic model that includes particle tracking module was applied to Geoje Bay and to calibrate particle tracking model, floating buoy measurement is operated. The model results show that short time is required for particles released into system from river to be transported to the shellfish farming area. It takes about 2 days for the particles to shellfish farming area under mean flow condition. It meant Geoje Bay, especially shellfish farming area is vulnerable to anthropogenic waste from river.
This study presents an approach of tidal farming optimization using a numerical modelling method to simulate tidal energy extraction for 1MW scale tidal stream devices around Jangjuk-sudo, South Korea. The utility of the approach in this research is demonstrated by optimizing the tidal farm in an idealized scenario and a more realistic case with three scenarios of 28-turbine centered tidal array (named A, B and C layouts) inside the Jangjuk-sudo. In addition, the numerical method also provides a pre-processing calculation helps the researchers to quickly determine where the best resource site is located when considering the position of the tidal stream turbine farm. From the simulation results, it is clearly seen that the net energy (or wake energy yield which includes the impacts of wake effects on power generation) extracted from the layout A is virtually equal to the estimates of speed-up energy yield (or the gross energy which is the sum of energy yield of each turbine without wake effects), up to 30.3 GWh/year.
Residence time is defined as the time taken for a material in a system to leave the system. The residence time characteristics in shellfish aquaculture determine the dispersion of excretion from aquaculture farms, along with the supply of food by seawater exchange. In this study, we estimated the spatial distribution of average residence time in the shellfish farming area using a particle tracking model. As a result, a relatively short average residence time of about 20 days or less was calculated in most areas, but an average residence time of more than 40 days was calculated in the inner areas. Relatively long average residence times were calculated along the west coast compared to the east coast, with the longest average residence time of more than 50 days in the northwestern areas. It can be inferred that the disturbance of the benthic ecosystem caused by shellfish farms is likely to be large because of the relatively weak dispersion of excrement from shellfish farms located on the west coast, especially in the northwest region. This distribution of average residence time is important for understanding the potential effects of seawater exchange on the environmental sustainability of shellfish farms, along with the seawater circulation characteristics of Jaran Bay.
그 결과, $400\;{\mu}M\;NH^{+}_4$ 와 $NO^{-}_2$는 12시간 이내에 제거되었고, $NO^{-}_3$는 36시간 이내에 각각 제거되었으며, $500\;{\mu}M\;PO^{3-}_4$ 36시간 이내에 제거되었다.
Among Japan's agriculture, forestry, fisheries and regional revitalization plans established in June 2018, the key matters related to aquaculture include ① a new perspective on the sponge use system for the development of aquaculture and coastal fisheries, ② a comprehensive strategy for growth and industrialization of aquaculture, and ③ expansion of suitable aquaculture areas. There are four countermeasures including ④ research and development trends. In accordance with these key points, the Japanese government established a comprehensive strategy for aquaculture growth and industrialization by strategically setting aquaculture items in consideration of domestic and international demand, establishing a comprehensive strategy from production to sales and export, and then working in earnest to promote the aquaculture industry. This study analyzes environmental changes surrounding aquaculture in Japan and trends in fish farming and marine products, and summarizes the key points of the June 2018 Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Regional Revitalization Plan to suggest measures that can be utilized in Korea's aquaculture policy.
Organic enrichment was investigated in surface sediments from the Yeoja and Gangjin Bays of Korea, which contain dense shellfish farms, in order to evaluate the contamination status and temporal changes in shellfish farming along these coasts. The degree of organic enrichment was determined using geochemical indicators (chemical oxygen demand, ignition loss, acid volatile sulfide, total organic carbon in sediments, and total nitrogen in sediments, ammonium and nitrate in pore water, and bioluminescence inhabitation for sediments). Temporal changes in organic enrichment conditions were detected by comparing our 2012 data to those previously reported from a survey conducted in 1999/2000. Organic enrichment was significantly higher in September than in May and July, in Gangjin Bay than in Yeoja Bay, and significantly higher in shellfish farms than in reference sites not used to culture shellfish. Ammonium concentrations in pore water were two orders of magnitude greater than nitrate concentrations, suggesting that these bays represent nitrogen-reducing environments.
This study was conducted to better understand the impact of marine fish farming by estimating mass balances of carbon and nitrogen. According to the results, 94.55% of carbon and 95.66% of nitrogen inputs were from the feed supplied in the farm. Of the total carbon emissions in the farm, 47.28% was due to fish respiration, which was subsequently released into seawater. Advection and diffusion in the farm contributed to 30.29% of the carbon released. In the case of nitrogen, 50.70% of the nitrogen released into the seawater was produced by fish excreta, and 31.37% was advected and diffused into the system. The sedimentary environment received 3.82% and 3.10% of the carbon and nitrogen released from the farm, respectively. The fish feed used for healthy growth contained 11.64% carbon and 9.17% nitrogen. Since the feed type was floating pellets, the load released into the sedimentary environment was relatively lower than that released into the marine environment. These findings suggest that the identification of an optimal fish feed that respects fish physiology and preserves a healthy ecology is critical for the future of aquaculture. Furthermore, ecosystem-based aquaculture systems that decrease environmental burden, while endeavoring to improve environmental health, are required.
In order to evaluate the recovery of fishing ground environment after the cessation of aquaculture farming, we examined the variation in sediment quality over time using different geochemical factors and investigated whether these factors are indicators of sediment quality recovery. The study area was an oyster Crassostrea gigas, farm in Tongyeong, Geyongsangnam-do, South Korea, where aquaculture activities had been carried out for 20 years, and the changes in water and sediment environment were monitored for 14 months after the abandonment of the farm. The mean water depth was 14 m, with a tidal range of 3 m, and seawater current velocity ranged from 4.7 to 7.0 cm/s. After the abandonment of the farm, total organic carbon and total nitrogen concentrations in the surface sediments decreased significantly over time compared to those in the control site; in particular, immediately after farm abandonment, acid-volatile sulfide concentrations decreased relatively rapidly. Carbohydrate and protein concentrations in the sediments showed no significant changes; however, lipid concentrations markedly decreased. Further studies on other aquaculture taxa and various aquaculture areas are needed to establish new policies for environmental management of fishing grounds, such as relocation of fishing grounds and determination of optimal fallowing periods.
