Numerical Analysis for Improving Passing Flow Rate Quantity abound a Radiator (라디에이터 통과풍량 확보를 위한 수치적 검토)

  • This paper describes the analysis of flow field using a projection finite element method. The projection scheme with a pressure correction is presented for the analysis of an incompressible Navier-Stokes flow. The projection scheme is analyzed numerically and applied to the well-known bench marking problems such as lid driven cavity. Finally, the projection scheme is applied to a flow through the automobiles front. In the automobiles cooling system, the flow through its front is very important to a cooling performance. The results show that the flow quantity increases by locating the position of bumper to the further front position of a car. And, the improvement on the suction part below a bumper achieves the more passing flow quantity. The attachment of an air dam increases passing flow quantity causing the pressure rise to the front part and the pressure drop beneath a car.

  • The temperature of the main engine cabin of commercial vessel is very high. The material SS-316L undergoes creep damage at temperatures exceeding $450^{\circ}C$. It is essential to maintain the highly stressed engine cabin below the creep regime. Hence, seawater is employed in this kind of maritime vehicles as cooling liquid. It obtains the thermal energy at the cooling pipe line after passing through main engine cooling system. To harness the energy in the seawater, a turbine can be installed to absorb the energy in the seawater before being released into the sea. In this study, a cooling pipe line is selected to apply the tubular type hydro turbine for transferring the energy. Numerical analysis for investigating the performance and the internal flow characteristics of the tubular turbine is conducted. The results show that the maximum efficiency of 85.8% is achieved although the efficiency drops rapidly at partial flow rate condition. The efficiency descends slowly at the condition of excess flow rate. There is a relatively wide operating range of flow rate of this turbine to keep high efficiency at the excess flow rate condition. For the internal flow of the turbine, there is uniform streamline on the suction and pressure sides of the blade at the design point. However, the secondary flow appears at the suction and pressure sidesat the excess flow rate.In addition, it appears only at pressure side at the partial flow rate condition.

A Study on Simulation of an Water Cooling Intercooler for a Small Marine Diesel Engine (소형 선박용 디젤엔진의 수냉식 인터쿨러 해석 연구)

  • This study was carried out to improve the design of an intercooler for a small marine diesel engine. Diesel engines for small marine ships have mainly been developed by changing the structure of the vehicle engine. Sea water was most commonly used in the intercooler of small marine diesel engines to cool the hot air compressed by the turbocharger. In this study, the intercooler is modeled and simulated using STAR-CCM+ in order to find optimal data for the design of an intercooler. In the results, the temperature differences between the data from a numerical analysis and experimental data were $0.38^{\circ}C$ in the hot air outlet and $3.63^{\circ}C$ in the cooling water outlet. Therefore, it was confirmed that both analysis and experimental results need to be considered when designing an intercooler. A closer degree of similarity in the two datasets can improve the confidence in the design of these intercoolers.

  • In this study, the piezoelectric fan cooling system is investigated. In order to find the proper geometry and configuration, the numerical model for the flow field and heat transfer investigation is used. A simplified nonlinear deformation model is employed for transient solutions of a piezoelectric fan with the dynamic mesh and user defined function capability. The results show that the cooling is most effective when the length of a piezoelectric fan is 5 cm and the cooling plate is 3 cm. The results can be used to develop a new design method of heat sink for piezoelectric fans.

  • The internal state of an automotive engine is very severe. A piston exposes burnt gas of over $2000^{\circ}$ nd is shocked by high pressure at the time of explosion. Furthermore strong friction is caused by high speed motion. A study on the cooling of the piston requires because the cooling and lubrication of the piston has an effect on the life and efficiency of engine directly. The previous system of oil jet cooled only the bottom of the piston. In order to improve the cooling efficiency, the oil gallery is made inside the piston, and oil flows into the oil gallery. The flow rate of oil at the entrance of oil gallery is important because of the cooling efficiency. The purpose of this study is the investigation of fluid flow characteristics of oil jet and flow rate into the oil gallery.

  • In this study, for the purpose of reduction of $CO_2$ gas emission and to increase recovery of waste heat from ships, the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) is investigated and offered for the conversion of temperature heat to electricity from waste heat energy from ships. Simulation was performed with waste heat from the exhaust gasse which is relatively high temperature and cooling sea water which is relatively low temperature from ships. Various fluid is used for simulation of the ORC system with variable temperature and flow condition and efficiency of system and output power is compared. Finally, 2,400kW output power is obtained by system optimization of the preheater and reheater utilizing waste heat form sea water cooling system.

  • Hydrocyclone has been widely used for the solid-liquid separation in many industrial sites because of its comparatively preferable applications that can be applied to wide-range particle sizes. If seawater with impurities flows through pumps or heat exchanger, it might cause an decrease in efficiency of cooling system. In this paper, we have suggested some methods of separating impurities from seawater in the cooling system by using a Hydrocyclone. The effects of design factors as solid concentration, cyclone inlet pressure, flow rate and diameter of underflow on the separating performance of the Hydrocyclone were investigated The results from this study are summarized as follows: 1) In proportion to the decrease of solid concentration, the efficiency of solid-liquid separation is improved 2) According as the cyclone inlet pressure increases the efficiency of separation is improved Conclusively, this research suggested that the Hydrocyclone will be used as a pre-treatment system of cooling water in machines, and eventually prevent unexpected accidents in engine systems.

Heat Dissipation of Sealed LED Light Fixtures Using Pulsating Heat Pipe Technology

  • An efficient cooling system is an essential part of the electronic packaging such as a high-luminance LED lighting. A special technology, Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP), can be applied to improve cooling of a sealed, explosion-proof LED light fixture. In this paper, the characteristics of the pulsating heat pipes in the imposed thermal boundary conditions of LED lightings were experimentally investigated and a PHP device that works free of alignment angle was investigated for cooling of explosion-proof LED lights. Five working fluids of ethanol, FC-72, R-123, water, and acetone were chosen for comparison. The experimental pulsating heat pipe was made of copper tubes of internal diameter of 2.1 mm, 26 turns. A variable heat source of electric heater and an array of cooling fins were attached to the pulsating heat pipe. For the alignment of the heating part at bottom, an optimum charging ratio (liquid fluid volume to total volume) was about 50% for most of the fluids and water showed the highest heat transfer performance. For the alignment of the heating part on top, however, only R-123 worked in an un-looped construction. This unique advantage of R-123 is attributed to its high vapor pressure gradient. Applying these findings, a cooling device for an explosion-proof type of LED light rated 30 W was constructed and tested successfully.

A study on design for free cooling system using dry cooler (드라이쿨러를 적용한 외기냉수냉방 시스템 설계에 관한 연구)

  • Free cooling system is used to reduce energy consumption of cooling system. Free cooling system is consisted of cooling group and dry-cooler in which heat exchange of chilled water and out air is conducted. Although this system has an excellent energy saving effect in place having cooling load regularly, data or material of design for free cooling system is lacked. In this study, characteristics analysis of free cooling system is conducted through software HYSYS with changing some facts. The main result is following as : Dry-cooler capacity is influenced by out air temperature, required chilled water temperature and LMTD(Logarithmic Mean Temperature Difference) of heat exchanger. As out air temperature is more low, dry-cooler capacity become increased. in addition, as required chilled water temperature is more high and LMTD is more low, the out air temperature range is widened for using dry-cooler. If out air temperature is below $0^{\circ}C$, antifreeze need to be used because freeze and burst can be occurred. In case of South Korea, antifreeze of 34% of ethylene glycol concentration is proper. When compressor load of R22, R134a and R407C is compared, considering environmental regulation and energy consumption, R134a is best working fluid.
