Flow characteristics in linear axial cascade have been studied using large eddy simulation(LES) based on finite element method(FEM) to investigate details of the leakage flow in the tip clearance of axial flow rotor. STAR-CD(FVM) and PAT-Flow(FEM) have been adopted to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for the simulation of the unsteady turbulent flow. Numerical results from the present study have been compared with the existing experimental results to investigate a tip clearance effect on velocity profile and static pressure distribution on blade surface at various spanwise positions. Both simulation results agree well with the experimental data. However, it has been shown that the results of finite-element large-eddy simulation agree better with experimental data than $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on finite volume method regarding the tip vortex geometry and static pressure distribution at the center of the tip vortex core. As a result of this study, it is shown that finite-element large-eddy simulation method can predict more exactly on the tip leakage vortex flow and behind flow field.

A comparative study on the turbulent flaw simulation and the potential flaw analysis has been performed. A law Mach number preconditioned Navier-Stokes solver, using the multi-block grid method and a panel method based on the velocity potential, have been developed and validated by comparison to the experimental data. The present numerical analysis methods are applied to the ground effect problem around the NACA 4412 airfoil. It has been confirmed that the potential flaw analysis on the ground effect, using the image method, is consistent, to some degree, with the viscous calculations for high Reynolds number flows.

Recent development of marine magnetic gradient systems, using arrays of sensors, has made it possible to survey large contaminated areas very quickly. However, underwater Unexploded Ordnances (UXO) can be moved by water currents. Because of this mobility, the cleanup process in such situations becomes dynamic rather than static. This implies that detection should occur in near real-time for successful remediation. Therefore, there is a need for a fast interpretation method to rapidly detect signatures of underwater objects in marine magnetic data. In this paper, we present a fast method for location and characterization of underwater UXOs. The approach utilises gradient interpretation techniques (analytic signal and Euler methods) to locate the objects precisely. Then, using an iterative linear least-squares technique, we obtain the magnetization characteristics of the sources. The approach was applied to a theoretical marine magnetic anomaly, with random errors, over a known source. We demonstrate the practical utility of the method using marine magnetic gradient data from Japan.
Identifying ship types is an important process to prevent illegal activities on territorial waters and assess marine traffic of Vessel Traffic Services Officer (VTSO). However, the Terrestrial Automatic Identification System (T-AIS) collected at the ground station has over 50% of vessels that do not contain the ship type information. Therefore, this study proposes a method of identifying ship types through the Random Forest Classifier (RFC) from dynamic and static data of AIS and V-Pass for one year and the Ulsan waters. With the hypothesis that six features, the speed, course, length, breadth, time, and location, enable to estimate of the ship type, four classification models were generated depending on length or breadth information since 81.9% of ships fully contain the two information. The accuracy were average 96.4% and 77.4% in the presence and absence of size information. The result shows that the proposed method is adaptable to identifying ship types.

To prevent pollution from ships, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is a mandatory guideline for all new ships. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) has also been applied by MARPOL to all existing ships. SEEMP provides the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for monitoring the operational efficiency of a ship. By monitoring the EEOI, the shipowner or operator can establish strategic plans, such as routing, hull cleaning, decommissioning, new building, etc. The key parameter in calculating EEOI is Fuel Oil Consumption (FOC). It can be measured on board while a ship is operating. This means that only the shipowner or operator can calculate the EEOI of their own ships. If the EEOI can be calculated without the actual FOC, however, then the other stakeholders, such as the shipbuilding company and Class, or others who don't have the measured FOC, can check how efficiently their ships are operating compared to other ships. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the EEOI without requiring the actual FOC. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, ship static data, and environment data that can be publicly obtained are used to calculate the EEOI. Since the public data are of large capacity, big data technologies, specifically Hadoop and Spark, are used. We verify the proposed method using actual data, and the result shows that the proposed method can estimate EEOI from public data without actual FOC.

For the last several decades, high-resolution shallow marine seismic technique has been used for various resources, engineering and geological surveys. Even though the multichannel method is powerful to image subsurface structures, single channel analog survey has been more frequently employed in shallow water exploration, because it is more expedient and economical. To improve the quality of the high-resolution seismic data economically, we acquired digital seismic data using a small air gun, 6 channel streamer and PC-based system, performed data processing and produced high-resolution seismic sections. For many years, such test acquisitions were performed with other studies which have different purposes in the area of off Pohang, Yellow Sea and Gyeonggi-bay. Basic data processing was applied to the acquired data and the processing sequence included gain recovery, deconvolution, filtering, normal moveout, static corrections, CMP gathering and stacking. Examples of digitally processed sections were shown and compared with analog sections. Digital seismic sections have a much higher resolution after data processing. The results of acquisition and processing show that the high-resolution shallow marine seismic surveys using a small air gun, 6 channel streamer and PC-based system may be an effective way to image shallow subsurface structures precisely.
A land nodal seismic system was employed to acquire seismic reflection data using stand-alone cable-free receivers in a land-river area. Acquiring reliable data using this technology is very cost effective, as it avoids topographic problems in the deployment and collection of receivers. The land nodal airgun system deployed on the mouth of the Hyungsan River (in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk Province) used airgun sources in the river and receivers on the riverbank, with subparallel source and receiver lines, approximately 120 m-spaced. Seismic data collected on the riverbank are characterized by a low signal-to-noise (S/N) and inconsistent reflection events. Most of the events are represented by hyperbola in the field records, including direct waves, guided waves, air waves, and Scholte surface waves, in contrast to the straight lines in the data collected conventionally where source and receiver lines are coincident. The processing strategy included enhancing the signal behind the low-frequency large-amplitude noise with a cascaded application of bandpass and f-k filters for the attenuation of air waves. Static time delays caused by the cross-offset distance between sources and receivers are corrected, with a focus on mapping the shallow reflections obscured by guided wave and air wave noise. A new time-distance equation and curve for direct and air waves are suggested for the correction of the static time delay caused by the cross-offset between source and receiver. Investigation of the minimum cross-offset gathers shows well-aligned shallow reflections around 200 ms after time-shift correction. This time-delay static correction based on the direct wave is found essential to improving the data from parallel source and receiver lines. Data acquisition and processing strategies developed in this study for land nodal airgun seismic systems will be readily applicable to seismic data from land-sea areas when high-resolution signal data becomes available in the future for investigation of shallow gas reservoirs, faults, and engineering designs for the development of coastal areas.

In electrical impedance tomography (EIT), the internal resistivity distribution of the unknown object is computed using the boundary voltage data induced by different current patterns using various reconstruction algorithms. This paper presents a new image reconstruction algorithm based on the genetic algorithm (GA) via a two-step approach for the solution of the EIT inverse problem, in particular for the reconstruction of "static" images. The computer simulation for the 32 channels synthetic data shows that the spatial resolution of reconstructed images in the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the modified Newton-Raphson algorithm at the expense of an increased computational burden.rden.

Finite Element Method is a strong tool to analyse static and dynamic problem of a structure. FEM is a good method for static problem, but for dynamic problem there are some differences between real phenomena and analyzed phenomena. Therefore some modifications are needed to identify two results. In this paper authors propose a genetic algorithm method 1) to adjust dimensions of plate for identifying natural frequencies, 2) to fit amplitude of FEM Frequency Response Function(FRF) onto it of real FRF. Analysis by raw FEM data gave questions if the results were for the same object. By only adjusting Young's modulus much better accordances were obtained, but limitation existed still. Very good agreements were achieved by shape modification and damping coefficient identification.
