KMT-2018-BLG-0029LB: A VERY LOW MASS-RATIO Spitzer MICROLENS PLANET

  • At q = 1.81 ± 0.20 × 10-5, KMT-2018-BLG-0029Lb has the lowest planet-host mass ratio q of any microlensing planet to date by more than a factor of two. Hence, it is the first planet that probes below the apparent "pile-up" at q = 5-10 ×10-5. The event was observed by Spitzer, yielding a microlens-parallax πE measurement. Combined with a measurement of the Einstein radius θE from finite-source effects during the caustic crossings, these measurements imply masses of the host Mhost = 1.14+0.10-0.12 M and planet Mplanet = 7.59+0.75-0.69 M, system distance DL = 3.38+0.22-0.26 kpc and projected separation a = 4.27+0.21-0.23 AU. The blended light, which is substantially brighter than the microlensed source, is plausibly due to the lens and could be observed at high resolution immediately.

RTN4 3'-UTR Insertion/Deletion Polymorphism and Susceptibility to Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in Chinese Han Population

  • Nogo protein, encoded by gene reticulon-4 (RTN4), includes three major isoforms by different splicing, named Nogo-A Nogo-B and Nogo-C. Nogo proteins play an important role in the apoptosis of cells, especially in tumor cells. RTN4 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) can influence the efficiency of transcription and translation thus being related with an individual's predisposition to cancer. The CAA insertion/deletion polymorphism (rs34917480) within RTN4 3'-UTR has been reported to be associated with many cancer types. In order to investigate the relationship between this polymorphism and susceptibility to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the Chinese population, we conducted the present case-control study including 411 NSCLC patients and 471 unrelated healthy controls. The genotype distributions were significantly different between cases and controls (p=0.014). We found that the del allele could significantly increase NSCLC risk (ins/ins vs ins/del: p=0.007, OR 1.46, 95%CI=1.11-1.93; dominant model: p=0.004, OR 1.47, 95%CI=1.13-1.92 and allele model: p=0.008, OR 1.35, 95%CI=1.08-1.67). This association was stronger in participants over 60 years old, males and smokers. We therefore conclude that the CAA insertion/deletion polymorphism (rs34917480) contributes to non-small cell lung cancer risk in Chinese population. Age, sex and environmental exposure are also related to carcinogenic effects of rs34917480.

Bio-protective potential of lactic acid bacteria: Effect of Lactobacillus sakei and Lactobacillus curvatus on changes of the microbial community in vacuum-packaged chilled beef

  • Objective: This study was to determine the bacterial diversity and monitor the community dynamic changes during storage of vacuum-packaged sliced raw beef as affected by Lactobacillus sakei and Lactobacillus curvatus. Methods: L. sakei and L. curvatus were separately incubated in vacuumed-packaged raw beef as bio-protective cultures to inhibit the naturally contaminating microbial load. Dynamic changes of the microbial diversity of inoculated or non-inoculated (control) samples were monitored at $4^{\circ}C$ for 0 to 38 days, using polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE). Results: The DGGE profiles of DNA directly extracted from non-inoculated control samples highlighted the order of appearance of spoilage bacteria during storage, showing that Enterbacteriaceae and Pseudomonas fragi emerged early, then Brochothrix thermosphacta shared the dominant position, and finally, Pseudomonas putida showed up became predominant. Compared with control, the inoculation of either L. sakei or L. curvatus significantly lowered the complexity of microbial diversity and inhibited the growth of spoilage bacteria (p<0.05). Interestingly, we also found that the dominant position of L. curvatus was replaced by indigenous L. sakei after 13 d for L. curvatus-inoculated samples. Plate counts on selective agars further showed that inoculation with L. sakei or L. curvatus obviously reduced the viable counts of Enterbacteraceae, Pseudomonas spp. and B. thermosphacta during later storage (p<0.05), with L. sakei exerting greater inhibitory effect. Inoculation with both bio-protective cultures also significantly decreased the total volatile basic nitrogen values of stored samples (p<0.05). Conclusion: Taken together, the results proved the benefits of inoculation with lactic acid bacteria especially L. sakei as a potential way to inhibit growth of spoilage-related bacteria and improve the shelf life of vacuum-packaged raw beef.

Ginsenoside Rg3 ameliorates myocardial glucose metabolism and insulin resistance via activating the AMPK signaling pathway

  • Background: Ginsenoside Rg3 is one of the main active ingredients in ginseng. Here, we aimed to confirm its protective effect on the heart function in transverse aortic coarctation (TAC)-induced heart failure mice and explore the potential molecular mechanisms involved. Methods: The effects of ginsenoside Rg3 on heart and mitochondrial function were investigated by treating TAC-induced heart failure in mice. The mechanism of ginsenoside Rg3 for improving heart and mitochondrial function in mice with heart failure was predicted through integrative analysis of the proteome and plasma metabolome. Glucose uptake and myocardial insulin sensitivity were evaluated using micro-positron emission tomography. The effect of ginsenoside Rg3 on myocardial insulin sensitivity was clarified by combining in vivo animal experiments and in vitro cell experiments. Results: Treatment of TAC-induced mouse models with ginsenoside Rg3 significantly improved heart function and protected mitochondrial structure and function. Fusion of metabolomics, proteomics, and targeted metabolomics data showed that Rg3 regulated the glycolysis process, and Rg3 not only regulated glucose uptake but also improve myocardial insulin resistance. The molecular mechanism of ginsenoside Rg3 regulation of glucose metabolism was determined by exploring the interaction pathways of AMPK, insulin resistance, and glucose metabolism. The effect of ginsenoside Rg3 on the promotion of glucose uptake in IR-H9c2 cells by AMPK activation was dependent on the insulin signaling pathway. Conclusions: Ginsenoside Rg3 modulates glucose metabolism and significantly ameliorates insulin resistance through activation of the AMPK pathway.

A Report of Chigger Mites on the Striped Field Mouse, Apodemus agrarius, in Southwest China

  • Based on the field investigations in 91 investigation sites (counties) in southwest China between 2001 and 2019, the present paper reported the chigger mites on A. agrarius mice in southwest China for the first time by using a series of statistical methods. From 715 striped field mice captured in 28 of 91 investigated sites, only 255 chiggers were collected, and they were identified as 14 species, 6 genera in 3 subfamilies under 2 families. Of 715 A. agrarius mice, only 24 of them were infested with chigger mites with low overall prevalence (PM=3.4%), overall mean abundance (MA=0.36 mites/host) and overall mean intensity (MI=10.63 mites/host). The species diversity and infestation of chiggers on A. agrarius were much lower than those previously reported on some other rodents in southwest China. On a certain species of rodent, A. agrarius mouse in southwest China seems to have a very low susceptibility to chigger infestations than in other geographical regions. Of 14 chigger species, there were 3 dominant species, Leptotrombidium sialkotense, L. rupestre and Schoengastiella novoconfuciana, which were of aggregated distribution among different individuals of A. agrarius hosts. L. sialkotense, one of 6 main vectors of scrub typhus in China, was the first dominant on A. agrarius. The species similarity of chigger mites on male and female hosts was low with CSS=0.25, and this reflects the sex-bias of different genders of A. agrarius mice in harboring different chigger species.

조생종 배 '한아름'에 대한 GA4+7 및 1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP) 처리 반응 (Response of Early-season Asian Pear 'Hanareum' Treated with GA4+7 to Postharvest Application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP))

  • 본 연구에서는 지베렐린($GA_{4+7}$)을 0, 0.5, 1.2, 2.4% 농도로 조생종 '한아름' 배에 처리하고 수확 후 에틸렌 작용 억제제인 1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP)를 $1{\mu}L{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 농도로 처리한 후, 20일간의 상온유통기간 중 과실품질 및 생리장해 발생에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 상온유통 기간 중 감모율의 변화는 $GA_{4+7}$ 농도와 관계없이 증가하는 경향을 보였으며, 1-MCP 처리의 경우 상온유통 기간이 증가함에 따라 감모율이 약간 감소하는 것으로 나타났고 $GA_{4+7}$ 농도가 증가함에 따라 1-MCP 처리 효과는 떨어졌다. 상온유통 10일에 1-MCP를 처리하지 않은 모든 과실에서 경도가 급격하게 감소하였던 반면 1-MCP를 처리한 과실의 경우 상온유통 15일까지 30N 이상의 높은 경도를 나타내었다. 그러나 $GA_{4+7}$ 처리 농도가 증가할수록 1-MCP 처리 효과는 떨어지는 것으로 조사되었다. 1-MCP를 처리한 과실의 경우 상온유통 기간 동안 가용성고형물과 산함량이 높게 나타났으며, 과피색의 경우 $L^*$(밝기) 및 hue angles은 높게 조사되었지만 $a^*$(적색도)의 경우 1-MCP 무처리에 비해 낮게 나타났다. 상온유통 중 에틸렌 발생량은 $GA_{4+7}$ 처리 농도에 영향을 받지 않았고 1-MCP 처리는 에틸렌 발생량을 낮추지 못하는 것으로 조사되었다. 반면 1-MCP 처리 과실의 호흡률은 상온유통 20일간 유의하게 낮게 조사되었는데 1-MCP 처리 효과는 지베렐린을 처리하지 않은 구에서 가장 크게 나타났고 $GA_{4+7}$의 농도가 증가함에 따라 호흡률 감소 효과도 떨어졌다. 한편 1-MCP 처리는 상온유통 중 발생하는 과심갈변이나 분질과 같은 생리장해 발생 경감효과를 보여, $GA_{4+7}$ 농도와 상관없이 상온유통 15, 20일 동안 과심갈변과 분질과의 발생을 억제하였다.
