  • Cattle feedlot manure could be used effectively as the solid fuel for heating of agricultural facilities. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the thermal and physicochemical characteristics of solid fuel extruded with cattle feedlot manure. Calorific values of the solid fuel extruded with cattle feedlot manure, which was dried to the moisture contents of 0.0% (w.b) and 35.0% (w.b,) were 14,906 kJ/kg and 11,797 kJ/kg, respectively. Calorific value of extruded solid fuel was linearly decreased with the increase of moisture content. The first, second, and third reaction point during thermal pyrolysis of solid fuels extruded with cattle feedlot manure was investigated as $108.1^{\circ}C$, $312.2^{\circ}C$, and $459.4^{\circ}C$, respectively. The maximum reaction point was presented at the temperature of $312.2^{\circ}C$. Weight loss of extruded cattle feedlot manure during thermal pyrolysis until $600^{\circ}C$ was reached to about 60%. Volume decrease of initial extruded cattle feedlot manure was 61% during drying for the use as solid fuel. Maximum strength of extruded cattle feedlot manure, which was dried as the moisture content of 10% (w.b.) was 41,9150 N/$m^2$. Ignition gas analysis of extruded cattle feedlot manure presented that it has small amount of $NO_x$ and $SO_x$. It was shown that dried cattle feedlot manure had main components of C and O including small amount of Mg, Si, and Ca.

  • This study was conducted to analyze growth responses of fast growing tree species(8 clones of hybrid poplars, Salix alba, Metasequoia glyptostroboides, Liriodendron tulipifera, Acer okamotoanum, and Quercus palustris), the chemical characteristics of soil and $NO_3-N$ concentration of groundwater in a plantation applied with liquid pig manure. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorous in the soil treated with liquid pig manure were higher than that of the soil treated without liquid pig manure. With the exception of S. alba, DBH(Diameter at Breast Height) growth of all the fast growing tree species treated with liquid pig manure was higher than that of the species treated without liquid pig manure. In liquid pig manure treatment group, P. euramericana 'Eco28' clone showed the best performance in height and DBH growth. Concentration of nitrogen in the leaf with liquid pig manure was higher than that of the leaf treated without liquid pig manure. Based on the $NO_3-N$ concentration of groundwater analyzed during the experimental period, there was no evidence that groundwater was polluted by the liquid pig manure applied at the plantation.

  • Silage wm(cv, Gwanganok) was cultivated during 1991-1994 on paddy land as a rotational cropping system of rice, to evaluate the effect of cattle manure application on the soil characteristics, yield performance and quality of com plant. The treatments used in this study were non-fertilizer, NPK standard in chemical fertilizer(N:$P_2O_5$ : $K_2O$= 200 : 150 : 150 kg/ha), cattle manure 20.40, 60 and 80 ton/ha Application of cattle manure improved soil pH, organic matter, available phosphate and exchangeable cations in the soils. During the experiment, soil pH was improved from 4.7 in the chemical fertilizer application(control) to 5.4-5.6 in the application of cattle manure, and available $P_2O_5$ wntent was increased from 72.2 ppm(contro1) to 340.2 ppm(cattle manure 80 ton/ha). Application of cattle manure increased plant growth, plant height and stalk diameter, and silage yields. Dry matter yields were produced 15.88 ton(chemical fertilizer), 20.11 ton(cattle manure 40 ton) and 21.22 ton/ha(cattle manure 80 ton/ha). However, no signicant yield differences were observed between cattle manure 40, 60 and 80 tonlha Productions of total digestible nutrients(TDN) and net energy for lactation(NEL) were also increased under cattle manure application. From the abobe results, the proper application amount of cattle manure was 40 tonha in this experiment.

  • Over 90% of the livestock excretions were treated and utilized by land application in Korea. Excessive application of the livestock manure as fertilizer has been issued as a main pollutant source in groundwater and watersheds. This study was seasonally conducted to identify the discharging characteristics with a certain artificial rainfall intensity (13 mm/hr) in terms of surface runoff, groundwater, and soil residue mass depending on the livestock manure types. A experimental field was constructed with three different sites that pig liquid fertilizer (LF), cattle manure (CM), and standard (S). The pig liquid fertilizer of 1,200 L and cattle manure of 900 kg were sprayed on each site ($50m^2$). The standard area was firmly prevented from any other contaminants. In the LF site, farmland discharging rate (FDR) was computed as 0.006 in CODcr, 0.015 in TN, and 0.029 in TP, resulted from the mass balance among total injection mass, surface runoff and groundwater. In the CM site, 29% of the nitrogen and phosphorus in each were discharged to the surface, and 64% and 58% of them were remained in the farmland. Surface runoff rate of the CM was higher than that of the LF, resulted from the solid form of the CM.

  • This study focused on the characteristics of manure in five beef cattle farms and two breeding farms in Hanwoo centered in Gyeongsangbuk-do province. The results of analysis and evaluation are as follows; First, the pH of manure in all the farms in this study was within the appropriate range of 8.81 to 9.45. Second, the dry matter content varied from 44.7% to 70.5% for all the farms. Third, the total nitrogen content in all the farms was 2.05-3.04%, which is higher than the reported range; however, it could play a role as a soil improvement agent when used as compost. Fourth, although the exact range of ammonia-N (VBN) content was not reported, results analyzed in all the farms showed that the level of impact on the environment was insignificant. In conclusion, soil and environment improvement effects are expected to be effective if the manure at Hanwoo farms in the Gyeongbuk area are used as compost through appropriate management.

  • The basic properties of cow and chicken manure such as proximate analysis and element analysis were estimated and the comparison to energy characteristics of carbonization residue between cow and chicken manure was evaluated. The optimum carbonization condition of cow and chicken manure was decided by total heating value of carbonization residue which was expressed by multiplying low heating value by yield. The optimum carbonization conditions for carbonization time and temperature can be decided by 15 min, and $350^{\circ}C$ for chicken manure, and 20 min, and $300^{\circ}C$ for cow manure. At the optimum carbonization conditions, low heating values for the carbonization residue of cow and chicken manure are evaluated by 4,378kcal/kg, and 3,462kcal/kg, respectively. The residues of cow manure were satisfied with the standard of solid fuel product. However, the residue of chicken should be improved by materials changes to be used as a renewable energy source.

  • In this study, the characteristics as well as the maturity and stability of chicken manure collected from nine chicken farms in South Korea during the summer and winter seasons of 2014 are evaluated. The physicochemical parameter values of the manure, such as BOD, $NO_3-N$ and $PO_4-P$ etc. were determined using the Korea Standard test Method, HPLC, and APHA standard methods. The results showed that the alkalinity content and COD concentration in winter chicken manure were higher than those of summer chicken manure. The moisture content of summer manure was positively correlated with almost all of the other parameters of the manure, whereas it was negatively correlated with almost all of the other parameters in the winter manure. According to the criterion of C/N ratio, chicken manure indicated good quality compost. However, composted chicken manure showed immature and unstable compost when considering the criteria of the $NH_4-N/NO_3-N$ ratio and $NH_4-N$ concentrations.

  • Ash amendment to manure holds potential as a method to neutralize manure for reducing odor and reduce phosphorus (P) solubility in runoff from fields where manure has been applied. This review focuses on the literature published about ash characteristics and their environmental uses. There is no uniform physico-chemical definition of the selected ashes (coal fly ash-CFA, wood ash-WA, and rice hull ash-RHA) used in various studies. These ashes vary greatly in their acidity (pH<6.0) or alkalinity (pH>12.5) based on the conditions at which they were farmed and the composition of the ash source. CFA amendment to manure reduced manure-P solubility and application of CFA amended manure to agricultural soils is a method to improve water quality WA may prove to be a valuable manure odor control amendment since WA contains a high level of carbon. A major biomass source is rice hull (husk) which provides an ash source (RHA). The .ice hull and RHA are sources of silica, compromising about 20% and 60%, respectively. So far research has been directed at the use of CFA, WA and RHA as soil amendments, but there is potential use of these materials as manure additives to sequester P and reduce odors.
