A Case Study on Layout Improvement in Medium and Small-Sized Manufacturing Factories (중소 제조 기업의 LAYOUT 개선 사례 연구)

  • This paper deals with a case study of layout design and improvement in medium and small-sized manufacturing factories. The shop layout affects greatly the productivity of manufacturing systems and we introduce some cases in which shop layouts are changed to improve the productivity step by step. Based on case studies, we propose also some guides to improve and design the shop layout in medium and small-sized manufacturing factories.

  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) aims to analyze possible impact upon manufacturing process and availability of products, and also study the environmental considerations and potential influence during entire life cycle ranging from procurement, production and utilization to treatment (namely, from cradle to tomb). Based on high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe manufacturing of company A, this case study would involve evaluation of environmental influence during the production process. When the manufacturing process has been improved during "production process" and "forming cooling" stage, it is found that capital input on "electric power" and "water supply" could be reduced, thus helping to sharpen the competitive power of company A, and also ensure sustainable economic and industrial development in accordance with national policies on environmental protection.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose guidelines for Introducing the JIT(Just-In-Time) purchasing to enhance the competitiveness of Korean manufacturing companies. This study employed an extensive survey on the use of the JIT purchasing systems among different Korean manufacturing companies to understand the current status of the JIT purchasing in use and to identify the benefits from implementing JIT purchasing. The survey has covered 163 manufacturing companies of different sizes from various sectors of Korean industries including electronics, automobiles, machineries, and textiles. The research results support that the JIT purchasing would contribute to increase the purchasing performances of Korean manufacturing companies.

  • The trouble of business management of the mining and manufacturing companies in Korea are constituted by that average 28.3% of production management in the worst trouble of business management from 1973 to 1980 So that Industrial productivity in Korea lower than an industrially advanced nation and then a change for the better of effective production management operations manufacturing companies are suggested by the application effects and achievement points of production management. Therefor Industrial Engineering technics is applied systematic route and the manufacturing company grow more than better its Business Physical condition for the improve productivity applied system approach for a rational product ion management system model.

  • Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is a system that companies can use to measure and control critical production activities. This paper shows case study of implementation of MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and its methodology in a medium sized production company. This study focused on two important things in MES implementation. First, it provides critical success factors (CSFs) and construction method for success of MES implementation. Second, it presents guidelines for MES implementation in small and medium-size company. Some of the benefits with regards to MES implementation and its results are introduced in the end of this paper.

  • The purpose of this study is to minimize the PCH(Propylene CHlorohydrins) as a by-product in HPMC(HydroxyPropyl MethylCellulose) manufacturing process. HPMC is made of cellulose which is natural high polymer. And HPMC is applicable to several industrial areas. Especially it can be used in food industry as an effective additive. PCH is the by-product which is generated in chemical reaction in HPMC manufacturing process. So it is essential to eliminate PCH for the improvement of product quality. Therefore we have studied to minimize the amount of PCH. It is expected that the application of HPMC could be enlarged as the result of this study.

  • A POP system, which collects manufacturing data from the shop floors and supply them to higher level systems, should be maintained and upgraded according to the change of production environment such as new product introduction. This situation leads to the need of a cost-effective system development methodology. In this paper, a methodology based on the classification and the similarity comparison of manufacturing processes is proposed. In this, a new product is classified according to the similarity of its manufacturing processes, which enables recycling of existing system modules. The proposed methodology has been tested in the case of an electronics parts manufacturing company, where a POP system is implemented. The result shows that the proposed methodology can save time and efforts for system implementation.

  • Records of industrial accidents are essential to maintain efficient and successful safety programs. The objective of this study is to examine the trends of industrial accidents in manufacturing industry, based on the national statistics. From 1972 to 1994, statistics of industrial accidents were extracted from the annual publications of Ministry of Labor. The results show that there are significant characteristics and trends in the records of industrial accidents. These findings identified in this study can be used to manage the accident prevention efforts.

  • The current market preassure of least environmental effects of products needs companies to consider whole life cycle of their products during their design phase. To support the integrated and collaborative development of the products, this paper proposed product data model for extended Product Data Managemen (PDM) that can support integrated design of product, manufacturing process, and customer services, based on the consistent and comprehensive PDM databases. The product data model enables design, manufacturing, and service engineers to express their products and services efficiently, with sharing consistent product data, engineering changes, and both economical and environmental evaluations on their design alternatives. The product data model was implemented with a prototype PDM system, and validated through an example product. The result shows that the PDM based on the proposed product data model can support the integrated design for products, manufacturing process, and customer services, and provide an environment of collaborative product development for design, manufacturing and service engineers.

  • In this study, a machine grouping problem for the formation of manufacturing cells is considered. We constructed the problem as minimizing manufacturing leadtime consisting of parts' processing, moving, and waiting time. Specifically, the main objective of the defined problem is established as minimizing inter-cell traffic in order to minimize the part's moving time. In addition, to reduce the waiting time of parts, the load balance among cells is implicitly included as constraints. Since this problem is well known as NP-complete and cannot be solved in polynomial time, a genetic algorithm is implemented to obtain solutions. Also, a local optimization algorithm is applied in order to improve the solution by the genetic algorithm. Several experiments show that the suggested algorithms guarantee near optimal solutions in a few seconds.
