  • Objectives: To establish a base for further research by reviewing studies on traditional Chinese medicine treatment for Tourette Syndrome. This is the purpose of this study. Methods: Clinical studies involving the effects of traditional Chinese medicine treatment for Tourette Syndrome, published January 2010~June 2017, were obtained from CNKI, Pubmed. Selected Studies were evaluated by the Jadad Scale. Results: Among a total of 252 articles, 39 articles that meet the criteria were selected. 'Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV)' was most frequently used as diagnosis criteria. 'Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS)' was primarily used for outcome measurements. Most of the studies showed effective results of traditional Chinese medicine therapy. However, the quality of a selected clinical studies was low. Conclusions: Despite several limitations, various studies to prove limited yet effective traditional Chinese medicine treatment on Tourette Syndrome provides much significance. Subsequent studies conducted by the complementary systematic review and well-designed clinical trials using the methodological quality will be needed to more firmly validate the effect of traditional Chinese medicine therapy.

Methods: We reviewed domestic and foreign papers related to Korean Medicine Treatment for OAB and literatures on Korean Medicine added clinical views of authors. Results: OAB is usually diagnosed to Deficiency pattern (Kidney qi deficiency-cold, Spleen-Lung qi deficiency et al.). The primary treatment goals of OAB is improvement of urinary symptom. But a comprehensive treatment approach including improvement of accompanied symptoms such as depression, insomnia, sexual dysfunction and improvement of quality of life is needed. Warming and tonifying herbal medicine, electro-acupuncture and moxibustion using acupoints specially acting bladder function in lower abdomen and lumbar-sacral area and behavioral therapies such as lifestyle modification, bladder training are usually primary treatments. Treatment period is recommended about 3~6 months to recover and stabilize bladder function. Conclusions: OAB is a clinical area that Korean Medicine tend to be more effective. but additional research about Korean Medical Clinical Management of OAB is needed.

  • Two patients, diagnosed as cervical spinal cord injury, were hospitalized and treated by Korean medical interventions with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). The range of motion of the shoulder joint, manual muscle test were adopted to measure the resulting motor recovery after treatment. And the Korean version of Barthel index (K-MBI) was adopted as a method of measuring the improvement of quality of life after treatment. The range of motions and muscle strengths of the shoulder joints were improved. The activities of daily living were slightly improved in case 2, but showed no improvement in case 1. FES was effective for upper extremities rehabilitation of spinal cord injured patients. Further studies are needed to set up an Korean medical protocol for spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

  • Objectives The objective of this study is to report the evidence that continuous passive motion (CPM) therapy combined with Korean Medicine is effective for knee injuries. Methods We searched 2 Korean medical electronic databases, and 2 Chinese electronic databases to find randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) that treat knee injuries with Korean Medicine combined with CPM therapy. We selected studies by screening. We extracted data from selected RCTs, and analyzed RCTs by using Cochrane's Risk of bias criteria. Results 386 studies are searched, and 7 RCTs are selected. According to the study, several kinds of Korean Medicine such as hydrotherapy, decoction, acupuncture, moxibustion, and manual therapy are used with CPM therapy for the knee joint postoperative rehabilitation. We found the encouraging evidence that Korean Medicine and CPM combined therapy is more effective than single CPM therapy by alleviating pain, increasing range of motion, and improving knee function, etc. However, the risk of bias in most RCTs was judged to be uncertain. Conclusions Combination of Korean Medicine and CPM therapy can compensate the defect of single CPM therapy, and promotes the recovery of knee joint function.

  • Objectives : This study was designed to collect the latest papers and to find more effective approach for childhood obesity. Methods : We searched 107 papers in English from Pubmed(www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) and selected 52 in favor of our study. In addition to that, we searched 29 papers in Chinese from www.cnki.net. Results are as follows. Results and Conclusions : There are not completely new treatments for childhood obesity. Instead of that, many studies aimed for prevention through family education, nutrition education, and exercises education. Specially, because some diseases including hypertension, diabetes and heart disease are connected with obese children, medication can be prescribed optionally. In that case, their mental health must be laid emphasis. And in China, TCM(Traditional Chinese Medicine) is very common treatment for childhood obesity. Acupuncture, herb medication and manual therapy could be used usefully. It is suggested that above latest treatments can be combined with Korean traditional treatments method in treating obese children.

  • Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune inflammatory disorder of the central nervous system characterized by optic neuritis and longitudinally extensive myelitis. Painful tonic spasm is a common complication of NMO, but there have been no reports about it in Korean medicine studies. In this case, we treated a 53-year-old woman diagnosed with NMO with paraplegia, painful tonic spasm, and decreased visual acuity using Korean medicine treatment, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, and moxibustion. We measured changes in clinical symptoms using the manual muscle testing (MMT), the numeric rating scale (NRS), the modified Barthel Index (MBI), and the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). After treatment, clinical symptoms were improved. The results indicate that Korean medicine treatment may be effective in the treatment of an NMO patient with paraplegia and painful tonic spasm.

Methods: A 63-year-old man diagnosed with cerebellar infarction with vertebrobasilar artery dissection was admitted to hospital for 86 days and treated with Korean medicine (acupuncture and herbal medicine) and rehabilitation treatment. Clinical symptoms were assessed with a Modified Barthel index, functional independent measurement, Berg balance scale, manual muscle test, and a visual analogue scale. Result: After treatment, the clinical symptoms were improved, and the evaluation index scores (modified Barthel index, functional independent measurement, Berg balance scale) increased. Conclusion: Korean medicine may be a meaningful treatment for patients with cerebellar infarction with vertebrobasilar artery dissection.

  • Objective: This case report describes the effects of Korean medicine treatment on chronic peroneal nerve palsy. Methods: One patient with peroneal nerve palsy was treated 6 months after onset with various Korean medicine treatments, such as acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine (Bojungikki-tang and Palmijihwang-tang), and Hominis Placental pharmacopuncture for 14 days. The Manual Muscle Test (MMT), range of motion (ROM) of the ankle, and a numerical rating scale (NRS) were used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. Results: After 14 days of treatment, the scores for all 3 scales were improved. The MMT grade increased from 1-3 to 4-4+. The ankle ROM was restored to a nearly normal range. The NRS showed a considerable improvement, decreasing from 7 to 2. No side effects were noted. Conclusions: Korean medicine may be effective for the treatment of chronic peroneal nerve palsy, but further studies are needed.
