  • The purpose of this study is to report the effect of oriental medical treatments with exercise therapy on the frail elderly patient with gait disturbance and cognitive decline. The frail elderly patient with gait disturbance and cognitive decline was treated by oriental medical treatments combined with exercise therapy during 3 months. The improvement of clinical symptom was evaluated by Manual Muscle Test (MMT), Passive Range Of Motion (PROM), Mini Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K). After 3 months, all of both lower extremity Manual Muscle Test (MMT) improved to Grade 4. Both knee extension Passive Range Of Motion (PROM) and Mini Mental State Examination-Korea (MMSE-K) also increased from -30/-30 to 0/-5, from 7 to 25 respectively. It could be suggested that oriental medical treatments with exercise therapy were effective on the frail elderly patient with gait disturbance and cognitive decline. And further research is encouraged to confirm the effectiveness of this treatment with a larger number of patients.

  • Background: The serratus anterior and upper trapezius muscles act synergistically to allow for an appropriate scapulothoracic rhythm. However, a decrease in serratus anterior activation causes the upper trapezius to become overactivated, resulting in dysfunction. This study compared serratus anterior and upper trapezius muscle activity according to sling angle and compared serratus anterior strength between healthy adults and patients with shoulder instability. Methods: Twenty participants (10 healthy adults and 10 patients with shoulder instability) were included in this study. The participants had their arms extended at sling angles of 30°, 60°, and 90° in reach forward with shoulder flexion using goniometer. Serratus anterior strength was measured three times while the participants were supine. The outcome measures were surface electromyography amplitude of the upper trapezius and serratus anterior and serratus anterior strength. Results: The Wilcoxon signed-rank test indicated that the upper trapezius was significantly different between healthy group and shoulder instability group at a sling angle of 60°, and both the upper trapezius and serratus anterior exhibited significant differences at 90°. Moreover, a significant difference was noted in the muscle strength of the serratus anterior. Conclusion: Our results provide novel and promising clinical evidence that patients with shoulder instability have decreased serratus anterior activation and upper trapezius overactivation, resulting in muscle imbalance. In addition, there was a significant difference between the healthy group and shoulder instability group in the serratus anterior muscle strength

  • Background: Ankle sprains, and the resulting ankle instability worsen to chronic due to recurrent ankle injuries or sprains, 78% of which are accompanied by posture instability and damage due to changes in the position of the talus of the ankle. The purpose of this study is to investigate the immediate effect of applying MWM taping on the patient's muscle strength and balance ability in patients with chronic ankle instability. Methods: 15 people with MWM taping and 15 people with Kinesio taping were applied, and after applying the taping of the ankle, 10 minutes of walking treadmill and 10 times of forward lunge operation, the change in ankle muscle strength and balance ability was confirmed. The strength test of the ankle was performed using a test device called Biodex system 4 (USA) for the movement of the dorsi-flexion and plantar flexion of the foot, and the balance of the two groups was measured using Biodex balance system (USA) to test balance ability. Results: The comparison of muscle strength changes in the ankle does not show a significant increase in the group applying MWM compared to the group applying kinesio taping (p<.05). In the comparison of equilibrium capabilities, the MWM taping group also showed a significant increase in the MWM taping group compared to the kinesio taping group (p<.05). Conclusion: When applying MWM taping and kinesio taping to patients with chronic ankle instability, there was no significant difference in comparison of muscle strength changes, but there was a significant difference in comparison of balance ability.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between Korean Shoulder Scoring System and Isokinetic muscle strength test for allowance of the return to unrestricted activities after rotator cuff disease treatment. Materials and Methods: This study examined 59 patients with impingement syndrome and 36 patients with rotator cuff tear. KSS and isokinetic muscle strength were analyzed and we sought to evaluate the correlation between total score or each functional parameter scores of KSS and isokinetic muscle strength deficit with Pearson's correlation test. Results: We found a weak negative correlation between and the total KSS score and the endurance test as well (r<0.346). The correlation between the manual muscle test of KSS and isokinetic strength deficits was not significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: The isokinetic muscle strength deficit had a weak correlarion between total score or the edurance test of KSS. Our results suggest that the Isokinetic muscle strength test may be needed for return to normal activity after treatment.
