  • This paper proposes a 3-PPR planar parallel manipulator, which consists of three active prismatic Joints, three passive prismatic joints, and three passive rotational joints. The analysis of the kinematics and the optimal design of the manipulator are also discussed. The proposed manipulator has the advantages of the closed type of direct kinematics and a void-free workspace with a convex type of borderline. For the kinematic analysis of the proposed manipulator, the direct kinematics, the inverse kinematics, and the inverse Jacobian of the manipulator are derived. After the rotational limits and the workspaces of the manipulator are investigated, the workspace of the manipulator is simulated. In addition, for the optimal design of the manipulator, the performance indices of the manipulator are investigated, and then an optimal design procedure Is carried out using Min-Max theory. Finally. one example using the optimal design is presented.

  • Modular robot manipulator is a robotic system assembled from discrete joints and links into one of many possible manipulator configurations. This paper describes the design method of newly developed modular robot manipulator and the methodology of a task based reconfiguration of it. New locking mechanism is proposed and it provides quick coupling and decoupling. A parallel connection method is devised and it makes modular robot manipulator working well and the number of components on each module reduced. To automatically determine a sufficient or optimal arrangement of the modules for a given task, we also devise an algorithm that automatically generates forward and inverse manipulator kinematics, and we propose an algorithm which maps task specifications to the optimized manipulator configurations. Efficient genetic algorithms are generated and used to search for a optimal manipulator from task specifications. A few of design examples are shown.

  • As the demand for the design of modular manipulators or special purpose manipulators has increased, task based design to design an optimal manipulator for a given task become more and more important. However, the complexity with a large number of design parameters, and highly nonlinear and implicit functions are characteristics of a general manipulator design. To achieve the goal of task based design, it is necessary to develop a methodology to solve the complexity. This paper addresses how to determine the kinematic parameters of a two-degrees of freedom manipulator with parallelogram five-bar link mechanism from a given task, namely, how to map a given task into the kinematic parameters. With simplified example of designing a manipulator with five-bar link mechanism, the methodology for task based design is presented. And it introduces formulations of a given task and manipulator specifications, and presents a new dexterity measure for manipulator design. Also the optimization problem with constraints is solved by using a genetic algorithm that provides robust search in complex spaces.

  • In this paper, mechanism design of the explosive ordnance disposal(EOD) manipulator for small unmanned ground vehicle(SUGV) is presented from the conceptual to detailed design. EOD manipulator has been widely developed in the world due to the growing threat of the improvised explosive devices at war. It has distinctive characteristics, such as small size and high loading performance, compared to the industrial manipulator which is fixed on the floor. Design of new EOD manipulator must take into account various functional requirements and constraints simultaneously. We focused on developing the EOD manipulator that has suitable size for the SUGV and maximum 15kg payload capacity. Design approach taken in this paper is based on axiomatic design procedure and comparison among many possible candidates of each joint structure to obtain appropriate entire structure of EOD manipulator.

  • Using the design parameters of multi-joint manipulator, worspace of the manipulator were evaluated analytically, and the relation between such design parameters and nonlinearity of the manipulator were presented dynamically. The ratio of the volumes of a manipulator's workspace to the cube of its total link length presents a kinematic performance index [NVI] for the manipullator. It is possible to geometrically represent the manipulator dynamics with the generalized inertia ellipsoid (GIE). The relation between the GIE configuration and the characteristics of manipulator dynamics was analysed in terms of inertia and nonlinear forces (Coliolis and centrifugal forces). The nonlinearity caused by the change of the GIE configuration were affected by the difference between the major and minor axes length of the GIE. The results of this investigationare applied to the optimal design of the manipulator.

  • This paper presents inverse kinematics and workspace analysis of a planar three degree-of-freedom (DOF) parallel manipulator. Furthermore, optimization problem of the manipulator is presented. The manipulator adopts PRR (Prismatic-Revolute-Revolute) mechanism and the prismatic actuators are fixed to the base. This leads to a reduction of the inertia of the moving links and hence enables it to move with high speed. The actuators are linear electric motors. First, the mechanism based on the geometry of the manipulator is introduced. Second, a workspace analysis is performed. Finally, design optimization is carried out to have large workspace. The proposed approach can be applied to the design optimization of various three DOF parallel manipulators in order to maximize their workspace. The performance of mechanism is improved and satisfies the requirements of workspace to align micro-components.

  • In this paper, a new design technique called Task Based Design (TBD) is proposed to design an optimal robot manipulator for a given task. Optimal design of a manipulator is difficult because it involves implicit and highly nonlinear functions of many design variables for a complex task. TBD designs an optimal manipulator which performs a given task best, by using a framework called Progressive Design which decomposes the complexity of the task into three steps: kinematic design, planning and kinematic control. An example of TBD is presented to demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our framework.

  • The KAERI Spent Fuel Remote Technology Development (SFRTD) Department is developing the remote maintenance and repair equipment, which is used in a hot cell in an intense radiation field, as part of a project to develop the Advanced spent fuel Conditioning Process (ACP). Although several mechanical master-slave manipulators (MSMs) is mounted on the hot cell wall, their reach will be limited and cannot access areas for all the ACP equipment maintenance. A Bridge Transported ServoManipulator (BTSM) has been designed to overcome the limitation of access areas that is a drawback of MSMs for the ACP equipment maintenance. The BTSM system consists of four components: a transporter with telescoping tubeset, a slave manipulator, a master manipulator, and a remote control system. The BTSM system has been designed by Solid Edge that is a 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software, except for the remote control system. The master manipulator and the slave manipulator are kinematically similar in design, except for the handle and the tong, respectively. The manipulators have 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) plus the jaws motion. The transporter has traveling, traverse, and hoisting motion to position the slave manipulator.

  • An industrial robot, installed real manufacturing processes an element of the system autmation, can be considered as an uncertain system due to dynamic uncertainties in inertial parameters and varying payloads. Most difficuties in controlling a robot manipulator are caused by the fact that the dynamic equations describing the motions of the manipulator are inherently nonlinear and heavily coupled effects between joints and associated links. Existing robot conrol systems have constant predefined gains and do not cover the complex dynamic interactions between manipulator joints. As a result, the manipulator is severly limited in range of application, speed of operation and variation of payload. The proposed controller is operated by adjusting its gains based on the response of the manipulator in such a way that the manipulator closely matches the reference model trajectories defined by the desinger. The proposed manipulator studied has two loops, an inner loop of model reference adaptive controller and an outer loop of state feedback controller with integral action to guarantee the stability of the adaptive scheme. This adaptation algorithm is based on the hyperstailiy approach with an improved Lyapunov function. The coupling among joints and the nonlinearity in the dynamic equation are explicitly considered. The designed manipulator controller shows good tracking performance in practical working environment, various load variations and parameter uncertainties.
