CGI is gaining popularity in applications that require either greater strength, or lower weight than cast iron. Recently, compacted graphite iron has been used for diesel engine blocks, turbo housings and exhaust manifolds. This paper were assessed acoustic emission characteristics according to the mechanical properties change of degraded CGI340 during 1-24 hours at 873~1173 K. In results of pencil lead fracture test, the dominant frequency and the velocity of base metal were 97 kHz and 5490 m/sec, respectively. The base metal in a tensile test was obtained relatively high dominant frequency. However, the heat treated materials, the longer the heat treatment time, the higher the heat treatment temperature, were obtained in the area of lower frequencies. This phenomenon appears by long-term use.

In this paper, by using a commercial EM simulator, we could obtain the array manifold which are phase responses of an array antenna for the incident plane wave and then verified the effectiveness of methodology after comparing with the measurement. The result shows that the array manifold can be calculated including not only the phase response of the ideal point sources but also the influences of the mutual coupling between antennas and the installed platform. Also it can exclude the interference of strong broadcasting signal and the disturbance of the multipath in the calibration process. Finally, to predict the performances of direction finding systems, a novel method using both the EM simulation-based receiving signal and the sparsely sampled array manifold with the parabolic estimation is proposed. This method can be utilized in the various fields of direction-finding since it shows the superior predictive performance even in low SNR conditions.

The stringent emission regulation and future shortage of fossil fuel motivate the research of alternative powertrain. In this study, a system of proton exchange membrane fuel cell has been modeled to analyze the performance of the fuel cell system for automotive application. The model is composed of the fuel cell stack, air compressor, humidifier, and intercooler, and hydrogen supply which are implemented by using the Matlab/Simulink(R). Fuel cell stack model is empirical model but the water transport model is included so that the system performance can be predicted over various humidity conditions. On the other hand, the model of air compressor is composed of motor, static air compressor, and some manifolds so that the motor dynamics and manifold dynamics can be investigated. Since the model is concentrated on the strategic operation of compressor to reduce the power consumption, other balance of components (BOP) are modeled to be static components. Since the air compressor model is empirical model which is based on curve fitting of experiments, the stack model is validated with the commercial software and the experiments. The dynamics of air compressor is investigated over unit change of system load. The results shows that the power consumption of air compressor is about 12% to 25% of stack gross power and dynamic response should be reduced to optimize the system operation.

Some receiver(and most transmit) beamforming algorithms with an array antenna at a cellular CDMA base stations require accurate internal and external calibrations. The external calibration, which usually needs to be done only once, determines the array manifolds, i.e. the complex response of each antenna as a function of DOA(Directions of Arrival). The internal calibrations are necessary because characteristics of RF/IF circuity of each receiver chain vary differently in response to temperature or humidity changes. We propose an iterative subspace-based calibration algorithm for an asynchronous CDMA-based antenna away in the presence of unknown gain and phase error is presented. We verify the subspace-based calibration algorithms by performing the experiment using measured data. Also, we propose an efficient algorithm using the simulated annealing technique. This algorithm overcomes the problem of the initial guessing in the subspace-based approach.

High-pressure die casting such as thixocasting and rheocasting is an effective process in the manufacturing automotive parts. Following the recent trend in the automotive manufacturing technologies, the product design subject to the die casting becomes more and more complex. Simultaneously the injection speed is also designed to be very high to establish a short cycletime. Thus, the requirement of the die design becomes more demanding than ever before. In some cases the product's shape can have multiple slender manifolds. In such cases, design of the inlet and outlet parts of the die is very important in the whole manufacturing process. The main issues required for the qualified products are to attain gentle and uniform flow of the molten liquid within the passages of the die. To satisfy such issues, the inlet cylinder ('bed cylinder' in this paper) must be as large as possible and simultaneously the outlet opening at the end of each passage must be as small as possible. However these in turn obviously bring additional manufacturing costs caused by re-melting of the bed cylinder and increased power due to the small outlet-openings. The purpose of this paper is to develop effective simulation methods of calculation for fluid flows in multiple columns, which mimic the actual complex design, and to get some useful information which can give some contributions to the die-casting industry. We have used a commercial code CFX in the numerical simulation. The primary parameter involved is the size of the bed cylinder. We will show how the very small opening of the outlet can be treated with the aid of the porous model provided in the code. To check the validity of the numerical results we have also conducted a simple experiment by using water.
For developing a 100 kW MCFC power generation system, Several design parameters for a fuel cell stack and system analysis results by Cycle Tempo, a processing computer soft ware, were described. Approximately two substacks with 90 cells are required to generate 100 kW at a current density of $125\;mA/cm^2$ with $6000\;cm^2$ of cells. An overall heat balance was calculated to predict exit temperature. The 100 kW power is expected only under pressurized operation condition at 3 atm. Recycle of cathode gas by more than 50% is recommended to run the stack at $125\;mA/cm^2$ and 3 atm. Manifolds should be designed based on gas flow rates for the suggested operating condition. The fuel cell power generation system was designed conceptually with several choices of utilization of anode exhaust gas. To operate and evaluate the MCFC system, control and measurement system and operation mode are designed before 100 MCFC system construction. In system control schematics, OS, PLC and MMI were consisted and have roles for MCFC system control. For operation of 100 kW MCFC system, NS, PS PR mode were considerated step by step and simulated.

In this paper, a new method is proposed to estimate the sound pressure generated from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. There are many noise sources as much as components in GDI engine. Among these components, fuel pump, fuel injector, fuel rail, pressure pump and intake/exhaust manifolds are major components generated from top of the engine. In order to estimate the contribution of these components to engine noise, the total sound pressure at the front of the engine is estimated by using airborne source quantification (ASQ) method. Airborne source quantification method requires the acoustic source volume velocity of each component. The volume velocity has been calculated by using the inverse method. The inverse method requires many tests and has ill-condition problem. This paper suggested a method to obtain volume velocity directly based on the direct measurement of sound intensity and particle velocity. The method is validated by using two known monopole sources installed at the anechoic chamber. Finally the proposed method is applied to the identification and contribution of noise sources caused by the GDI components of the test engine.
In this study, the configurations of the two engine exhaust manifolds were designed. And the strengths and durabilities were analyzed through the structural analysis and natural frequency analyses of these models. As the result of structural analysis, the strength of model A is much better than that of model B because the maximum stress and deformation of model B are considerably greater than those of model A by more than 9 and 39 times, respectively. It can also be confirmed that model A has the durability better than model B because the maximum frequency of model A is greater than the natural frequency of model B and its maximum deformation is smaller than model B. The result of this study can be used to investigate the durability due to the exhaust manifold shape of medium-sized car without actual test. It also seems to be helpful in the aesthetic convergent design of small car muffler.

In this study, we performed numerical analysis for 1 kWe SOFC stack of internal manifold types according to the different manifold sizes to verify the influence of the flow uniformity into each cell. To simulate the flow phenomena in the stack, the continuity and momentum conservation equations including the standard k-𝜺 turbulent model for the steady-state conditions were applied. From the calculation results, we verified that the pressure drop from inlet pipes to outlet pipes decreased to a log scale as the manifold size increased in the internal manifold types. Also, we found that the flow uniformity increased on an exponential scale as the manifold size increased. In addition, the calculation results showed that the flow uniformity gradually improved as the fuel and oxygen utilization increased.
