Amyloid-producing odontogenic tumors were described in the gingival masses of two Maltese dogs. Gingival masses were surgically removed and submitted for diagnosis. On histopathology, the masses were poorly demarcated, infiltrative, and consisted of cuboidal and columnar epithelial cells with palisading pattern. Nodular deposit of congophilic amyloid-like material and mineralization were another features of the tumors. Immunohistochemically, the neoplasticd cells were positive to pancytokeratin and neuron-specific enolase but were negative to vimentin. The amorphous homogeneous eosinophilic materials were positive to Congo red stain and showed apple-green color under the polarized microscope. Based on these results, both cases were diagnosed as amyloid-producing odontogenic tumors in dogs.
Acanthomatous epulis is a malignant form of gingival tumor. This is a case of epulis affecting a four-year old, intact, female Maltese dog raised as indoor pet in Iksan city. Clinical examination showed an enlarged palpable mass along the rostral maxillary gingiva. Section of the excised mass showed epithelial overgrowth and expansion from the basal portions through the tissue stroma. Post-surgical radio-graph showed displacement of the first and second maxillary incisors. Histochemical staining showed strongly positive reaction to epithelial marker cytokeratin and moderately positive reaction to connective tissue marker vimentin. This case was diagnosed as a form of maxillary gingival acanthomatous epulis. Routine clinical oral examination is suggested.
An 11-year-old, castrated Maltese dog presented with a 3-week history of periocular swelling, epiphora, and intermittent strabismus. On examination, a foreign body was observed in the anterior chamber, along with orbital cellulitis. Severe gingivitis and plaque accumulation were also diagnosed. The foreign body was surgically removed, and dental prophylaxis and dental extraction were performed. The foreign body entrance could not be found intraoperatively, and the foreign body, later identified as a feather, was removed through a clear corneal incision. The right maxillary molar, which had periodontal inflammation, was also extracted. One day postoperatively, severe hypopyon developed, although the periocular swelling was reduced. These signs persisted despite topical and systemic antibiotic and anti-inflammatory therapy; therefore, the right eye was enucleated 1 week later. Intraoperatively, a fistula was found connecting the orbital medial wall, right maxillary molar root, and sclera. The fistula entered the dorsomedial sclera approximately 7 mm behind the limbus. Enterobacteria were cultured from the area. Foreign bodies can enter the anterior chamber not only through the cornea, but also through the mouth. Therefore, when the entry point cannot be found in the cornea, a careful dental examination is required, and the foreign body must be removed through the sclera rather than the cornea.
A 10-year-old spayed female Maltese with a history of vomiting and lethargy was referred to the hospital. Physical examination revealed dehydration and severe pain following abdominal palpation. A large mass was observed in the cranial abdomen through radiography and ultrasonography. Laparotomy was performed to find the origin of the mass. The mass was about 8 cm originating from the cecum and subsequently removed. Histopathologic evaluation revealed that the cecal mass was suspected to be a mesenchymal-derived tumor. Through immunohistochemistry, the mass was diagnosed as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) based on the c-kit expression. Given its recurrence, postoperative preventive therapy was initiated with masitinib mesylate, which is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor. The animal did not show any side effects during the medication period. After 6 months of therapy, it was well controlled without any recurrence. In this case, we introduced a novel postoperative management of GIST using masitinib mesylate.

Paraneoplastic hypereosinophilia, characterized by the infiltration of eosinophils into systemic organs, has rarely been reported in dogs with intestinal lymphoma. A 12-year-old spayed female Maltese with eosinophilia in the peripheral blood and ascites was found to have muscular layer thickening in the small intestine. Histologically, there was transmural infiltration of small to intermediate sized neoplastic lymphocytes that were immunohistochemically CD3-/CD79a-. PCR for antigen receptor rearrangement demonstrated clonal T cell receptor gene population. A moderate number of eosinophils were present along with neoplastic lymphocytes in the small intestine, and eosinophil infiltration was also noted in the abdominal lymph nodes and spleen. The present case reports intestinal T-cell lymphoma with generalized paraneoplastic hypereosinophilia. Clinicians should be aware that hypereosinophilia can be found in the organs, body cavity fluid, and peripheral blood of dogs with intestinal lymphoma.
Medical records of 139 tumors from 114 dogs that underwent surgery from May 2010 through March 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. Among 114 dogs, females (64.9%) were significantly more common than males (35.1%) (p<0.05). Dogs aged 6 to 10 years were more presented than non-tumor patients, however, there was no significant difference. The mean age (±SD) was 10.3±3.0 years. Although we found no significant difference of breed predisposition, the most common breed was Maltese (19.3%), followed by Shih-Tzu (14.0%), and Yorkshire terrier (13.2%). Proportional morbidity ratios (PMRs) of mammary gland, oral cavity, and skin tumors were high in Poodles, Yorkshire terriers, and Golden retrievers, respectively. Mammary gland (36.0%) was the most common site, followed by skin and soft tissues (12.2%), oral cavity (10.8%), and digestive organs (8.6%), but there was no significant difference. The objectives of surgery were curative surgery (86.2%), biopsy (4.9%), and palliative surgery (6.5%). In this study, 123 of 139 tumors had histopathological diagnoses. Adenocarcinoma was the most common type (n=24), followed by adenoma (n=17), soft tissue sarcoma (n=13), benign mixed tumor (n=5), and others (n=64). Recurrence or suspected metastasis was identified in 26 dogs. Median survival times of malignant mammary gland tumors, skin and subcutaneous tumors, and splenic tumors were 1,563.0±1,201.7, 469, and 128 days, respectively.
A 2-year-old Maltese and a 5-month-old Yorkshire terrier were presented with ataxia. Tetraparesis was observed in a 9-year -old Yorkshire terrier. The localizations of the lesions suggested brain or cervical spinal cord by the neurological examination, and the following images was achieved: radiography, axial images of computed tomography (CT), reconstruction image of CT such as multi-planar reformation(MPR) and 3-dimensional(3D) reconstruction and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). On radiography, the misalignment between atlas (C1) and axis (C2), absent dens of axis, and increased space between the dorsal arch of C1 and spinous process of C2 were found. The discontinuation between dens and body of C2 was identified through axial CT images, and the fragmentation of dens separated from axis was observed through MPR and 3D image in all case. The hyperintense lesions and the spinal cord compression on T2-weighted MR images were represented in a dog with tetraparesis, the others represented only spinal cord compression. Three dogs were diagnosed as atlantoaxial instability (AAI) by dens fracture of C2. The dog with tetraparesis was euthanized due to guarded prognosis. The others were recovered completely. It is difficult to differentiate dens fracture of C2 from abnormal dens such as agenesis and hypoplasia. We thought that CT is very useful to evaluate the dens of C2 and differentiate the causes of AAI, and the reconstruction images of CT such as MPR and 3D make the translation of the fragmented dens or axis of AAI more precisely evaluate.

In this experiment, two inclusion levels (15 and 30% of diets, as-fed basis) of brown rice (BR) were tested against a control diet with 0% BR (51% wheat flour of diet). Six female Maltese (8~9 months age, initial mean body weight of $2.8{\pm}0.3$ kg) were assigned to treatments in replicated $3{\times}3$ Latin square design. Total tract digestibilities of DM, OM, acid hydrolyzed fat, CP and gross energy by dogs fed experimental diets responded quadratically (P<0.01 or <0.05) to BR inclusion levels. Similarly, quadratic responses (P<0.001, P=0.015) were observed for digestible energy and metabolizable energy values, respectively. Wet and dry fecal output also exhibited quadratic responses (P=0.006, P=0.014, respectively) but no differences were observed between control and BR 30% diets. Linear (P=0.008) effect was observed for fecal score in dogs fed BR, and fecal ammonia concentration increased linearly (P=0.001) in response to increasing BR inclusion levels. It seems that the increase in fecal ammonia concentration may be partially related to the decrease tendency (P=0.07) in short-chain fatty acid concentration. In this experiment, inclusion of BR in dog diet did not result in pronounced changes in the digestibility but in fecal score. Although inclusion of BR in diets showed profound positive effect on fecal score, it is confounded by the high inclusion level of poultry offal meal.
This study was performed to quantitatively assess the normal lung volume and density according to the position by multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) in dogs. Helical CT of the thorax was performed on 4 different positions with dorsal, left lateral, right lateral and ventral recumbency in 6 Pekingese and 6 Maltese dogs. During CT scanning, dogs were kept hyperventilated. Through the 3-dimensional reconstruction of CT images, the lung parameters were measured as the volume and density of the left, right including accessory lobe, and total lung. 3D images represented the different lung shape between Pekingese and Maltese dogs. Their difference of total lung volume and total lung density was not significant on the each position in both breeds. Right lung volume was significantly higher than left. The difference of left and right volume was $66.91{\pm}25.1$ ml. Linear relationship was shown between body weight and lung volume of ventral recumbency position. The dependent lung had higher density and lower volume than nondependent lung in both breed dogs. The volume of nondependent lung was not changed compared with the volume on ventral or dorsal recumbency. The total lung volume measured with MDCT is correlated with the lung density, and the lung density is useful to predict the normal total lung volume.
A miniature pinscher and two Maltese dogs were present with dyspnea, and radiography and computed tomography (CT) were performed. All dogs were diagnosed with giant bullous emphysema of the massive, hyperexpanded, and hypoattenuating bulla causing contralateral mediastinal shift. Giant bullous emphysema, the rarest form of bullous lung disease, is defined as a bulla that fills more than 30% of the hemithorax, and multi-detector CT scanning could provide the useful information to confirm a diagnosis of giant bullous emphysema in older dogs. The radiographic and computed tomographic features for giant bullous emphysema were described.
