  • In this paper, we propose a novel method of analyzing video and representing the relationship among characters based on their contexts in the video sequences, namely Character-Net. As a huge amount of video contents is generated even in a single day, the searching and summarizing technologies of the contents have also been issued. Thereby, a number of researches have been proposed related to extracting semantic information of video or scenes. Generally stories of video, such as TV serial or commercial movies, are made progress with characters. Accordingly, the relationship between the characters and their contexts should be identified to summarize video. To deal with these issues, we propose Character-Net supporting the extraction of major characters in video. We first identify characters appeared in a group of video shots and subsequently extract the speaker and listeners in the shots. Finally, the characters are represented by a form of a network with graphs presenting the relationship among them. We present empirical experiments to demonstrate Character-Net and evaluate performance of extracting major characters.

The purpose of this study is to understand the romantic images in modern fashion, by analyzing the fashion trends together with the various features of romantic images.

  • Though there has been great advances in films' computer graphics both in technical and artistic side, there is still a big gap between computer graphics (a.k.a CG) studios in South Korea and major CG studios in US. Therefore, in this research, based on working experience at Disney Animation and information from working professionals in major CG studios, this paper analyzes strengths and weakness of character pipeline that major CG studios have by using examples and then suggest what CG studios in South Korea need. Steps of research process is to analyze what CG studios in South Korea developed, what are the strengths and weakness of Disney's character pipeline system and how these strengths can be applied to CG studios in South Korea.

  • is a service providing story synopses that match user's query. This paper presents a classification of character types by clustering of character tendencies found in the user log of . We also present a visualization method of showing genre-action relationships to each character type, and investigate the genre-action relationships of the major character types. We found that a small number of character types can represent more than half of the character tendencies and the character types tend to have a relationship to particular genres and actions. According to this properties, it would be desirable to provide supports for creative writing classified by character types.

This study targeted 491 high school girls and college women in Daegu and Kyung-pook area. The character preference according to the character image applied the fashion commodity was used the scale of seven point modified the S D (Semantic Differential) method for Kim, Chun-Ae's image measure. The followings are the conclusions of this study; Both the group of high school girls and the group of college women almost represented the similar reaction result for the images of 9 characters. For the preference of the group of high school girls and the group of college women for 9 character, for characters Tweety, Bugs Bunny, the group of college women represented more preference than the group of high school girls. However, for characters of Hello Kitty, Pazama sister's and Dalki, the group of high school girls represented more preference than the group of college women.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with character of nursing students using ecological theory. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 296 nursing students. Collected data from self report questionnaires were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression with SPSS WIN 21.0. The Results of this study were as follows. A total of 2 models were examined according to individual, microsystem in ecological system theory. In the first model including individual factors, positive emotion, communication ability were significant factors explain character of nursing students. In the second model adding micro system factors family strength and major satisfaction found to be significant factors. The prediction factors of nursing student' character were communication ability (${\beta}=.431$, p<.001), major satisfaction (${\beta}=.310$, p<.001) and family strength (${\beta}=.176$, p<.001). The explanation power was 55.6%. These results showed that factors affecting character of nursing students are communication ability, major satisfaction, and family strength. Therefore, we suggest to develop various character education programs considering these factors.

  • Hindi is the most widely spoken language in India, with more than 300 million speakers. As there is no separation between the characters of texts written in Hindi as there is in English, the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems developed for the Hindi language carry a very poor recognition rate. In this paper we propose an OCR for printed Hindi text in Devanagari script, using Artificial Neural Network (ANN), which improves its efficiency. One of the major reasons for the poor recognition rate is error in character segmentation. The presence of touching characters in the scanned documents further complicates the segmentation process, creating a major problem when designing an effective character segmentation technique. Preprocessing, character segmentation, feature extraction, and finally, classification and recognition are the major steps which are followed by a general OCR. The preprocessing tasks considered in the paper are conversion of gray scaled images to binary images, image rectification, and segmentation of the document's textual contents into paragraphs, lines, words, and then at the level of basic symbols. The basic symbols, obtained as the fundamental unit from the segmentation process, are recognized by the neural classifier. In this work, three feature extraction techniques-: histogram of projection based on mean distance, histogram of projection based on pixel value, and vertical zero crossing, have been used to improve the rate of recognition. These feature extraction techniques are powerful enough to extract features of even distorted characters/symbols. For development of the neural classifier, a back-propagation neural network with two hidden layers is used. The classifier is trained and tested for printed Hindi texts. A performance of approximately 90% correct recognition rate is achieved.

  • Everybody recognizes importance of characters in theater animation that directly influence audiences through narrative structure. However, it is very difficult to make one. This study is about this process that creates characters. This study derived what common points were involved in analysis data of major/supporting characters' formative characteristics in various studies related to animation characters. Then, based on the data, this study analyzed how major/supporting characters were transformed to animation characters in the scenes that were animated at the beginning and end of film that were released in 2007. Finally, this study investigated the process of character creation using portrait based on the analyzed data. Although this study tried to approach to character creation objectively using objective data rather than subjective judgment of the researcher, the researcher recognizes that subjective thoughts could not be completely excluded since it is done by man's hands. However, this author sincerely hopes that this research can be a great help in producing animation characters through understanding form factors of images that makes character for short film producers who suffered from slow work process due to difficulty in creating characters or authors who failed to complete satisfactory work as they could not find slight difference in character modification.

  • In order for the game industry to grasp the initiative of the global industry, it is time to positively need storytelling that can move the emotions of gamers over graphical appearance. Also, in the era of the 4th industrial revolution where the point of contact between virtual and reality spreads widely, it seems that the game character industry will rapidly emerge. Therefore, the author recognizes the importance of the character industry in the future, and based on the accumulated game research, he has identified 10 elements necessary for character storytelling. The ten elements are as follows. Design of life, design of race, design of occupation, design of PC and NPC, design of monster, design of personality, design of conflict, design of protagonist, design of external image, design of birth and death.
