Most of urban streams in Korea have been changed channel forms and suffered from direct inflow of domestic sewage, etc. Therefore, maintenance of structure and function of those ecosystem are hard. The present study was carried out to examine the life survival maintenance ability of the stream by community analysis of aquatic animals in typical urban stream (Jungrang stream) in Seoul. The aquatic animals were composed of 31 species, 18 families, 8 orders, 5 classes in 4 phyla. Seasonal species number showed big fluctuation between 8 species in Winter and 24 species in Autumn. Major dominant species in Jungrang stream were Tubificidae sp.1, Chironomidae sp.1, Chironomidae sp.2 and Physa acuta, and above endurance species for water pollution occupied very high dominance indices. But, Cercion hieroglyphicum, Ischnura asiatica, Rantra chinensis, Herochares striatus, Agabus japonicus in benthic macroinvertebrates of a few individuals are appeared. Also, fry of Carassius auratus and Silurus asotus in fish are occurred. Therefore, we can be inferred on posibility of growth and spawning of above species in the stream. Jungrang stream has a small quantity of natural riffle areas, ponds and watergrass areas by channel form of water course. Aquatic animals in Jungrang stream has been suffered by reduction of self-purification reaction ability and have mass production of attached algae on the stream bed. For analysis of fluctuation of life survival maintenance ability in Jungrang stream, long-term survey is needed.
PURPOSES : Surface treatment is a favorable method in the pavement preventive maintenance. This study (Part I) aimed to develop the low viscosity filling material for waterproof characteristics and high penetrable and weather resistance, and a series of companion study (Part II) presents the coating characteristics and performance analysis using field and lab tests. METHODS : Hydrophobic characteristics of the advanced surface treatment material are observed and measured the filling depth and the permeability for sand and asphalt pavement specimen using the water absorption test and permeability test, X-RAY CT test. Color difference for the weather resistance using ultraviolet ray accelerated weathering test is compared with asphalt pavement specimens. RESULTS : The developed material shows the decreased water absorption and increased impermeable effect because of the hydrophobic characteristics. It is found that the filling depth is about 6mm and weather resistance is better than asphalt pavement specimen. CONCLUSIONS : The advanced hydrophobic - low viscosity filling treatment material is developed in this study (Part I) to improve the waterproof characteristics and high filling capacity and weather resistance for the pavement preventive maintenance.
One of the important trends for condition monitoring in the 21st century is the development of smart sensors that will permit the cost-effective continuous monitoring of key machine equipments. In this study, an integrated in-line oil monitoring sensor assigned for continuous in situ monitoring multiple parameters of oil performance is presented. The sensor estimates oil deterioration based on the information about chemical degradation, total contamination, water content of oil and oil temperature. The oil oxidation is estimated by "chromatic ratio", total contamination is measured by the changes in optical density of oil in three optical wave-bands ('Red', 'Green' and 'Blue') and water content is evaluated as relative saturation of oil by water. In order to evaluate the sensor's effectiveness, the sensor was applied to several used oil samples in steel making industry and the results were compared with those measured by standard test methods.
Automatic control systems(AVR, Governor, Synchronizer) installed $1970{\sim}1980$ in K-water were considered to be rehabilitated around 2000. Moreover, Korea Power Exchange market system was changed from PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) to a bidding system. Therefore, depending on the power quality, the power provider could achieve additional profits. It is the excitation system and governor that have the functions of enhancing power necessities. During the 20 to 30 years of generator operation, there were many major and minor problems. Examples are SCR burnout (Andong: Excitation system), hunting (Imha: governor), field circuit breaker failure (Chungju 1st: excitation system), the rise of leakage current (Chungju 2nd: excitation system), power supply burnout (Chungju 2nd: governor). These are the typical examples of malfunction which hindered the generator operation and, consequently, diminished the profit of power business. In order to satisfy the needs of the power market and prevent malfunctions mentioned above, the rehabilitation of AVRs and governors were executed. A new system was made to have the flexibility of ancillary service (GF, AGC, etc.), PSS function. With user friendly HMI software, it is more convenient for the operator to fulfill suitable maintenance. It was possible to connect SCADA system by opening protocol of AVR, governor for the efficiency of operation and maintenance.
Reinforced concrete deck slabs are directly affected by traffic loads and they are also susceptible to weather-related problems, such as cracking, reinforcement corrosion, spatting, scaling, delamination, leakage, efflorescence and so on. Some of these defects are caused by water which seeps through pavements and trapped between pavements and deck slabs. For durability of reinforced concrete deck slabs and pavements, it is very important to protect deck slabs and drain the trapped water out. To develop the trapped water drainage system, the following studies have been performed in Korea Highway Cooperation: related researches a re reviewed; for six bridges, deck slabs are thoroughly investigated; new system to effectively drain the trapped water out is proposed; the proposed system is installed and evaluated. The proposed system is proved to be effective to drain the trapped water out and is expected to increase the durability of reinforced concrete deck slabs.
Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) developed a risk monitor called Risk Monster which supports for plant operators and maintenance schedulers to monitor plant risk and to avoid high peak risk by rearranging maintenance work schedule. Risk Monster can update the plant risk continuously according to the change of system/component configuration since Risk Monster reevaluates the plant risk based on the Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) results. A brief description of Risk Monster is provided. The PSA model of UCN 3, 4 nuclear power plant was converted by KAERI to Risk Monster model. Using this Risk Monster model, a feasibility study of the on-line maintenance of an Essential Service Water (ESW) pump was performed. On-line maintenance of one ESW pump has been shown to be acceptably safe, and has economic benefits. In addition, it is not a violation of technical specification to continue plant operation with an out-of-service ESW pump.

We aimed to understand various problems identified at waterscape facilities of gardens built at garden shows in Korea. The main purpose of the study is to understand which parts of waterscape facility built in gardens at garden shows are causing problems and whether these problems can be traced back from garden design phase or from local communities in charge of maintenance. Furthermore, we examined if such problems get more aggregated as time passes by and different garden shows have different types of problems. In this study, types of waterscape facilities examined are pond, waterway, wall fountain, water glass, trough, mist, Cascade, fountain, rain garden, waterfall. An analysis of the maintenance status of waterscape facilities introduced in the existing gardens confirmed that problems could arise in two main respects. One is due to poor maintenance by the organizers of the garden show, and the other is due to the poor design of waterscape facilities by the garden designer.
Preeminent water treatment plans are essential to preserve the water quality of aquatic biotopes. Previous studies have not been sufficient to provide cost-effective maintenance method since they focused only on the purification of deteriorated water that requires a continuous supply of clean water. This study proposes an economical method of water quality maintenance using water treatment media block constructed vertically using porous ceramics, zeolite, and river pebble. The water treatment media block does not require a separate purification area because it functions as a purifier within the ecological pond which can maximize the biotope area. To evaluate the performance of the water treatment media block, we longitudinally tracked the change of water quality indicators (pH, TDS, COND, DO, T-P, T-N, COD) suggested by Water Environment Standards, Ministry of Environment, Republic of Korea. We compared the water quality of one control (A: general ecological pond composition method of the laminated structure) and two experimental groups (B: a combination of aquatic plants and a water treatment media block, C: a water treatment media block only). As a result, we confirmed that the water treatment media block is an efficient and economical method to maintaining the water quality of the ecological pond for a long time. The water treatment media block will be a great help in providing a better aquatic biotope space for aquatic insects and fishes living in clear water.
