  • In Korea, open spaces of urban housing do not serve residents as "regular living areas". We carried out research on the "streets" of urban housings in that the meaning of traditional "streets", playing roles which are not only means of passage but also boundary of life, cannot include present meaning of "streets" of the urban housing. This research is to propose the direction of planning Community Streets for the recovery of the public- and communal urban housing's streets, researching the present employment condition of Community Streets that were prepared recently. Working with 3 complexes which have been completed since 2000, We studied the present employment condition and planned signification, according to the conditions of their surroundings, the physical conditions of Community Streets, and the relationship among main apartment buildings, open spaces, and facilities. From this study, We came up with several suggestions that can present the planning line of Community Streets. Therefore this research is to create the Community Streets for the activity of the streets, the recovery of the community, and improvement of ambulatory environment.

  • Cloud streets were successfully simulated by numerical model (RAMS) including an isolated mountain near the coast, large sensible heat flux from the sea surface, uniform stratification and wind velocity with low Froude number (0.25) in the inflow boundary. The well developed cloud streets between a pair of convective rolls are simulated at a level of 1 km over the sea. The following five results were obtained: 1) For the formation of the pair of convective rolls, both strong static instability and a topographically induced mechanical disturbance are strongly required at the same time. 2) Strong sensible heat flux from the sea surface is the main energy source of the pair of convective rolls, and the buoyancy caused by condensation in the cloud is negligibly small. 3) The pair of convective rolls is a complex of two sub-rolls. One is the outer roll, which has a large radius, but weak circulation, and the other is the inner roll, which has a small radius, but strong circulation. The outer roll gathers a large amount of moisture by convergence in the lower marine boundary, and the inner roll transfers the convergent moisture to the upper boundary layer by strong upward motion between them. 4) The pair of inner rolls form the line-shaped cloud streets, and keep them narrow along the center-line of the domain. 5) Both by non-hydrostatic and by hydrostatic assumptions, cloud streets can be simulated. In our case, non-hydrostatic processes enhanced somewhat the formation of cloud streets. The horizontal size of the topography does not seem to be restricted to within the small scale where non-hydrostatic effects are important.

  • Recently, people in urban areas ask for the creation of space for amenity and improvement of environmental problems, in such a condition the activation and reformation of city have become an important subject. The basic element of a city structure is the street. Therefore in this study, a transition of street spaces of a city was investigated. This study will be a basis for the planning of urban space in order to realize a comfortable and fascination urban life. In this paper, the study areas chosen were "Ginza", "Kyobashicho", "Nihonbashicho", "Honcho", "Tsukizi", "Hatchoboricho", "Ningyocho", "Ningyocho" which are the central places and business areas of capital Tokyo of Japan. The main streets were chosen for investigative subjects because they were planned as making a division of block in a city planning. Using maps and references the data was illustrated and the investigation was focused on the period from the Edo era to present time. (1) A periodical division for the basis of a street transition. (2) Consideration of methods in a plan and design for street spaces in each period. (3) A special feature and process of a street transition in each period. (4) A structure of a street and a construction form. (5) A classified structure of streets. (6) A process of a transition for each street.

  • This study is to find a way that improves the pedestrian environment in the main street in rural areas. The main streets of five local governments in Jeollanam-do, general towns and bases seat of a myeon office, were studied. The research results are as follows. First, all three groups under investigation required multi-purpose activities on main street. This is thought to be due to the maintenance of the main street with vehicle-centered maintenance, thereby revising the walking space around essential activities. Second, the simple size of the sidewalk width is not closely related to the safety of pedestrians, and it is judged that the pedestrian space should be maintained considering the size of the floating population, acceptable activities, and proper sidewalk width. Third, the center where pedestrian space and streetscape are maintained has spatial constraints on sidewalks and lanes, so there should be spatial flexibility. Also, it is necessary to find a way to minimize the occupancy of pedestrian roads due to ground parking lots in relation to pedestrian continuity. Fourth, improvement of walking environment should involve community activities other than physical improvement.

  • This research explored contemporary cities and children's lives in picture books by a survey of 71 picture books published and translated into Korean from 1996 to 2006. These books represented city or urban life as their settings with children or personified animals as their main characters. They were classified by four categories. Results were the city space that most frequently appeared in the picture books were streets (73%) including downtown (38%) and back streets (6%). Emotions displayed by children in the city were mainly negative feelings (60%) including fear, worry, sadness, and boredom. The most important issue was alienation (28.5%). Main characters barely managed to cope with life in the city (76%).

  • In order to evaluate the physical and psychological health effects from automobile air pollution, 99 employees who worked near a main street were given a general health questionnaire, and the prevalence of their subjective complaints was measured. The collected data were classified according to gender, sleep time, degree of regular exercise, self-consciousness of symptoms, length of employment, work time, rest time, and smoking status. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The scores related to health complaints regarding physical and psychological items were higher in females than in males. THI scores were higher for the < 4 hour sleep time group. The health complaint scores for physical items were higher in the regular exercise group, whereas most scores for mental items were higher in the irregular exercise groups. The health complaints scores for physical and psychological items were higher in the unhealthy symptom group than in other groups. Those employees who had worked for > 4 years showed significantly higher rates of complaints regarding the eyes and skin. THI scores were higher for the < 6 hour working time group. The smoking group showed higher scores regarding health complaints related to physical items. The THI scores of the respiratory organs, mouth, anus, and digestive organs were significantly higher for the smoking group than for the non-smoking group. In summary, this study shows that the health complaint scores regarding physical and psychological symptoms tended to be higher among the unhealthy group, the less sleep time group, the less work time group, smokers, and females. These results can be used to improve the psychosomatic health status and working environments of employees who work near a main street.

  • This study aims to derive street design alternative which can be applied to residential area as the functions of land use have been changed. The main findings are as follows; First, the study area in this research is on the process of the functional transition from full residential use to residential-commercial mixed use with cafes and restaurants. Second, dead-end streets in residential areas needs to be widened in order to meet the increasing needs of pedestrians and cars. One of the suggested strategies is to remove fences on the dead-end streets. Third, based on the main findings, this research can suggest following policies. Citizen participation is necessary in building land use plans and space design in old residential areas. Citizens can participate in architectural and landscape contracts, district-unit plan with the help of experts such as urban planners and architects.

  • The urban form of Korean cities significantly changed in the late Chosun dynasty. The influence of commercial development was the main cause of these changes. Commerce became a important function of existing cities, and the new type of commercial towns emerged at the important spots of traffic routes. In both cases streets became dominant element of urban form. Mainly commercial buildings aggregated along the streets, and to obtain higher land use intensity shape of lots became narrow and deep. Koyang(高陽) shows the most significant example of this new type of lot and lot pattern. Approximately 30 narrow and deep type of lots lined on each side of street forming about 390 meters long linear commercial town. Similar examples were found at the outside of south gate of Suwon(水原), Nuwon(樓院), and Pangyo(板橋).

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a scheme to provide children safer and more comfortable walking circumstances by survey current walking circumstances of school zone ways. First, to avoid pedestrian roads being interrupted and to expand waiting space near school zone ways, several measures are needed including fixing roads, using schools' unemployed spaces and building additional gateway. Second, pedestrian crossings in front of school gate should be located at least 23.16m away from the left side of the gate. Third, on narrow path which cross main streets, the interval of pedestrian signal should be extended as against of the moment. And traffic calming facilities should be built on accurate position. Fourth, to secure pedestrians' safety and field of view, trees lining streets and any obstacles located within 10m from bus stop sign should be removed. Finally, education system about school zone ways should be improved to help children get used to more complicated roads' conditions.
