Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) is one of the common food pathogens which may cause gastroenteritidis in human and animals. The microorganism also causes the economic loss in animal farming and food industry. In this study, the disinfection efficacy of a powder disinfectant containing phosphate compounds as a main ingredient, was evaluated against S. Typhimurium. A bactericidal efficacy test by broth dilution method was used to determine the lowest effective dilution of the disinfectant following exposure to test bacteria for 30 min at $4^{\circ}C$. The disinfectant and test bacteria were diluted with hard water (HW) or organic matter suspension (OM) according to treatment condition. On HW and OM conditions, the bactericidal activity of the disinfectant against S. Typhimurium was 4- and 2-fold dilutions, respectively. As the disinfectant composed to phosphate compounds possesses bactericidal efficacy against pathogenic bacteria such as S. Typhimurium, the powder disinfectant can be used to control the spread of bacterial diseases.
The purpose of this study was to obtain the basic data needed to identify the impact of the odor, emitted from the Ochang Scientific Industrial Complex area on the surrounding residential areas by measuring and confirming odor compounds. The analysis showed that complex odors were diluted from around 4 to 1. The offensive odor measurement results showed that among the sites, site 1 was highest in sulfur compounds, site 2 was highest in toluene, site 3 was highest in trimethylamine, and site 4 was highest in buthylaldehyde. It cannot be decided to be odor-causing compounds for higher odor concentration because each odor substance has a different odor threshold value. According to the odor contribution analysis for each site, site 1, site 2, and site 4 contained high buthylaldehyde concentrations, and site 3 had a high level of trimethylamine. It could be determined that highly evaluated substances were main causes to result in substance for each site.

Volatile components in natural and basic fraction of the steam distillation extraction method from squid during processing were analysed by GC and GC-MS equipped with a fused silica capillary column. Thirty eight compounds were identified; they were 31 compounds from neutral, 7 compounds from basic fraction. The main components flavor of squid were 3-methylthiophene, 2-methyl-2-hexanthiol, 1-penten-3-ol, 3-penten-2-ol, 3-ethyl-1,4-hexadiene, 1-hydroxy-2-propanone, hexenal and benzaldehyde etc.. Especially, (E, E)-3,-5-octadecanal were detected during the boiled. 2,5-dimethyl pyrazine, 2-ethyl-6-pyra-zine, 2,3,5-trimethyl pyrazine and 2-ethyl-3,5-dimethyl pyrazine basic compounds, which have respectively a burnt and roasted odor, are considered to be important for the characteristic basic fraction of squid.
Antifungal activities of 43 different plant oils were evaluated against different phytopathogenic fungi. Thyme oil showed highest antifungal activity among the tested oils. The major of thyme oil were found to be thymol, carvacrol, bomeol, p-cymene and linalool. Thymol and carvacrol were found to be responsible for thyme's antifungal activity. The spore germination assay was conducted on Alternaria mail and Botrytis cinerea. Thymol and carvacrol strongly inhibited spore germination in the fungi test. In addition, thymol and carvacrol showed a curative effectiveness to gray mold disease on cucumber crop. The antifungal activities of alkylphenol and alkylaniline compounds, which has similar molecular structure to that of thymol or cavacrol, were also tested. It was found that alkylphenol compounds also show higher inhibition to spore germination. Thus, thymol, carvacrol and alkylphenol compounds can be used an potent antifungal agents.
This study measured the amounts of uronic acid, total sugars, non-cellulosic neutral sugars, phenolic compounds as well as antioxidants activity in cell wall materials (CWM) derived from different parts of deodeok (Codonopsis lanceolata). The values of the uronic acid (UA): neutral sugars (NS) ratio in polymers extracted from the CWM of the flesh and skin were 4 and 6, respectively. The total sugar contents of the flesh and skin were 788.6 and 824.9 ${mu}g/mg$ of CWM, respectively. Galactose and arabinose were the main noncellulosic neutral sugars. The chemical structure of five phenolic compounds from the CWM were analyzed and identified as vanillic acid, p-OH-benzaldehyde, vanillin, ferulic acid, and 8-O-4' diferulic acid by HPLC spectral data. Among them, p-OH-benzaldehyde, vanillin, and 8-O-4' diferulic acid were the first compounds identified from the deodeok. The content of 8-O-4' diferulic acid in the skin CWM was 56.1 ${mu}g/g$ AIR (alcohol insoluble residue). The ethanol-NaOH fractions from CWM had the highest oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) activities, followed by the AIR fractions and ethanol fractions.

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a serious pathogen which causes yield loss in many dicotyledonous crops including potato. The objective of this study was to assess the potential of biofumigation using three Brassica crops including Brassica napus, B. juncea and B. campestris against potato stem rot caused by S. sclerotiorum by in vitro tests. Both macerated and irradiated dried tissues were able to reduce radial growth and sclerotia formation of five pathogen isolates on PDA, but macerated live tissues were more effective. Compared with other tested crops, B. juncea showed more inhibitory effect against the pathogen. The volatile compounds produced from macerated tissues were identified using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer. The main identified compounds were methyl, allyl and butyl isothiocyanates. Different concentrations of these compounds inhibited mycelial growth of the pathogen in vitro when applied as the vapor of pure chemicals. A negative relationship was observed between chemicals concentrations and growth inhibition percentage. In this study, it became clear that the tissues of local Brassica crops release glucosinolates and have a good potential to be used against the pathogen in field examinations.
Quercetin and resveratrol are known to have beneficial effects on the diabetes and diabetic complication, however, the effects of combined treatment of these compounds on diabetes are not fully revealed. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the combined antidiabetic action of quercetin (QE) and resveratrol (RS) in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. To test the effects of co-treated with these compounds on diabetes, serum glucose, insulin, lipid profiles, oxidative stress biomarkers, and ions were determined. Additionally, the activities of hepatic glucose metabolic enzymes and histological analyses of pancreatic tissues were evaluated. 50 male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into five groups; normal control, 50 mg/kg STZ-induced diabetic, and three (30 mg/kg QE, 10 mg/kg RS, and combined) compound-treated diabetic groups. The elevated serum blood glucose levels, insulin levels, and dyslipidemia in diabetic rats were significantly improved by QE, RS, and combined treatments. Oxidative stress and tissue injury biomarkers were dramatically inhibited by these compounds. They also shown to improve the hematological parameters which were shown to the hyperlactatemia and ketoacidosis as main causes of diabetic complications. The compounds treatment maintained the activities of hepatic glucose metabolic enzymes and structure of pancreatic ${\beta}-cells$ from the diabetes, and it is noteworthy that cotreatment with QE and RS showed the most preventive effect on the diabetic rats. Therefore, our study suggests that cotreatment with QE and RS has beneficial effects against diabetes. We further suggest that cotreatment with QE and RS has the potential for use as an alternative therapeutic strategy for diabetes.
The rate of vulcanization of nonpolar ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer(EPDM)/carbon black compounds was investigated by using hot air and microwave as a heating source. The present study parameters such as heating source, sample thickness, and loading of an additive. The compound thickness was the main factor in the hot air vulcanization. It was due to the poor thermal conductivity of EPDM; that is, the thicker thickness, the lower vulcanization rate. For 100% vulcanization, the compound with 3 mm thickness required 7 min at $250^{\circ}C$ in the hot air system. However, the vulcanization of EPDM compounds by microwave system was not affected by the thickness while strongly dependent on the amount of a polar additive, carbon black. A compound with 80 phr of carbon black was perfectly vulcanized within 30 sec. These results suggest that the use of microwave as a heating source is an effective method for the vulcanization of compounds including a polar component.
The volatile constituents of Mugwort seeds were extracted by simultaneous steam distillation-extraction apparatus, and analyzed by combined GC and GC-MS. Of the 73 compounds identified from Mugwort seed extract, the main volatile compounds were campher (14.242%), borneol(12.812%), 1.8-cineol(6.437%) and terpinen-4-ol(1.185%) comprising about 35%. Effect of the volatile constituents (champher, borneol, 1.8-cineol, terpinen-4-ol and essential oil) on the growth of Microorganism (B. subtilis, E. coli, S. cerevisiae, L. mesenteroides, L. Plantarum, A. oryzae). Of the volatile compounds had a antibiological effect, terpinen-4-ol was the most effective in volatile compound.

Two species, P. pyrifolia and P. ussuriensis, of the genus Pyrus native to Korea, are valuable genetic resources that can be used for food, dietary supplement, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics. Bioactive compounds of the plant leaves are the main components that are used for the products. Farmers had cultivated a few individuals from the wild to produce fruits or leaves for traditional remedy or tea; however, bioactive components of their leaves are not tested. We selected some trees from the natural stand that have distinct traits for the improvement program. We investigated the bioassay on the extracts' bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity from the selected accessions and other accessions, including newly developed cultivars. The contents of the phenolic compounds and flavonoids from the leaf extracts of the selected accessions were higher than the commonly cultivated trees in both species but lower than 'Sanhyang' in P. ussuriensis. The antioxidant capacity was measured using two assay methods, DPPH and ABST. The selected cultivars also had higher inhibitory activity than common trees. The selected accession 'Cultivar 3' in P. pyrifolia had the highest radical scavenging activity than others. Although leaves of the accessions were used only in this study, all three selected individuals have the potential for cultivar in containing high bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity.
