  • Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers globally, ranking second for the number of cancer-related deaths. Metastasis has been reported as the main cause of death in patients with colorectal cancer. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) is a transcription factor that functions as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting cellular proliferation, migration, and invasion. In our previous efforts to generate natural product-motivated PPAR-γ ligands, the compounds 1 and 2 were obtained. These compounds activated PPAR-γ and inhibited the migration and invasion of HCT116 colorectal cancer cells, and they were also found to inhibit the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, which is a key process in cancer metastasis. Compounds 1 and 2 upregulated expression of the epithelial marker (E-cadherin), and downregulated expression of the mesenchymal marker (N-cadherin) and transcriptional factor (Snail). Therefore, the PPAR-γ agonists 1 and 2 could serve as a valuable model for the study on anti-metastatic leads for the treatment of colorectal cancer.

  • The stem barks, heartwoods, and leaves of Acer tegmentosum (Aceraceae) are widely used in Korea to treat hepatic or cerebral disorders mainly due to alcohol poisoning. This study was aimed to analyze phenolic substances in A. tegmentosum. Quantitative analysis of the three phenolic substances (salidroside, (+)-catechin and scopoletin) was performed by HPLC and the identification of volatile phenolic substances were done by GC-MS. The contents of the three compounds in the three MeOH extracts were higher in the stem bark (salidroside: 80.22 mg/g, (+)-catechin: 23.31 mg/g, and scopoletin: 9.45 mg/g) compared to the heartwoods and leaves. And GC-MS analysis of the stem bark extract demonstrated that p-tyrosol is a main substance of twenty-one compounds identified.

  • Three known triterpenoids were isolated from MeOH extract of C. apiifolia (Ranunculaceae). Their structures were identified as oleanolic acid (1), ursolic acid (2), hederagenic acid (3) by comparison of their physicochemical and spectral data with the literature values. Among them, 2 was isolated for the first time from this plant. The isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicity against L1210, HL-60, SK-OV-3 tumor cell lines. All compounds 1-3 were shown good activities with $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 7.7 to $25.6\;{\mu}g/ml. This result suggests that triterpenoids 1-3 are main cytotoxic principles of this plant.

  • The main sources of the new house syndrome(sometimes it called sick building syndrome) are a concentration of formaldehyde (HCHO) and a concentration of total volatile organic compounds(TVOC). I had field measurements of indoor air quality in the apartment unit at medium-size cities(Y city, C city). I measured indoor air temperature, HCHO concentration in 16 units, TVOC concentration in 6 units and air tightness in 7 units. And I measured outdoor air quality, HCHO concentration and TVOC concentration. Mean concentration of HCHO was $357{\mu}g/m^3$(2006 standard=$120{\mu}g/m^3$), mean concentration of TVOC was $3,092{\mu}g/m^3$ and mean effective air leakage area was 193 cm2. There was a close relation between the indoor air temperature and HCHO concentration, between the indoor air temperature and TVOC concentration. Air tightness also had relation.

  • Additives, such as sodium perborate and borax, were examined in dialdehyde wrinkle resistant finishing of cotton. Results indicated that the whiteness index(WI) of cotton treated with dialdehyde and additive showed about 90% of WI of the untreated cotton but with decrease in wrinkle recovery angle (WRA) due to inhibition effect of these additives. Effect of additive on the WRA reduction was more prominent with glutaraldehyde than with glyoxal. Reduction in WRA of cotton treated with both dialdehydes and boron compound was minimized by simultaneous addition of formic acid in the bath. Addition of formic acid was also generally beneficial in maintaining WI retentions after 8 months storage. Furthermore, boron compounds were also effective in improving retentions of mechanical properties. By FTIR analysis the residual aldehyde group was detected on the dialdehyde-finished cotton, whereas no peak was shown by addition of boron compounds. This suggested that the residual aldehyde group was a main cause of fabric yellowing on the dialdehyde-finished cotton. Dialhehyde with boron compound, therefore, can be used to replace a conventional formaldehyde-containing wrinkle resistant finishing of cotton.

  • Background: Platinum compounds are the main drugs for treatment of advanced gastric cancer. Previous studies have shown that clinical outcome with platinum-based compounds depends on ERCC1 polymorphisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of a common polymorphism of ERCC1 gene (C8092A) in Iranian patients with advanced gastric cancer receiving platinum chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: Genetic analysis of the ERCC1 C8092A polymorphism was performed by the PCR - RFLP method using 50 paraffin-embedded tissue specimens. Results: Of the 50 cases, 32% of individuals showed CC genotype, 24% of them had CA genotype and 44% of patients had AA genotype. Conclusions: Based on the results, using of platinum-based chemotherapy would be expected to be specifically beneficial in only 32% of patients.

  • Korean ginseng, which contains ginsenosides and polysaccharides as its main constituents, is orally administered to humans. Ginsenosides and polysaccharides are not easily absorbed by the body through the intestines due to their hydrophilicity. Therefore, these constituents which include ginsenosides Rb1, Rb2, and Rc, inevitably come into contact with intestinal microflora in the alimentary tract and can be metabolized by intestinal microflora. Since most of the metabolites such as compound K and protopanaxatriol are nonpolar compared to the parental components, these metabolites are easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The absorbed metabolites may express pharmacological actions, such as antitumor, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and neuroprotective effects. However, the activities that metabolize these constituents to bioactive compounds differ significantly between individuals because all individuals possess characteristic indigenous strains of intestinal bacteria. Recently, ginseng has been fermented with enzymes or microbes to develop ginsengs that contain these metabolites. However, before using these enzymes and probiotics, their safety and biotransforming activity should be assessed. Intestinal microflora play an important role in the pharmacological action of orally administered ginseng.

  • The aroma components of Korean green tea in the south western part of Mt. Chiri prepared by the traditional method from native variety were analyzed using GC and GC-MS. The patterns on GC chromatograms of the three samples from the flushes plucked in early spring were similar, though they are prepared by different producers in the area of Hadong-kun, Kyung sang nam-do. A total of 51 aroma compounds were identified in all samples. Main component in the aroma compounds of these teas were geraniol, benzyl alcohol, 2-phenylethanol, $\beta$-ionone, benzyl cyanide and linalool oxides. The aroma components of green teas manufactured by the different plucking periods were also compared. The amounts of geraniol, typical rose floral aroma were particularly decreased in the final plucking period. The amounts of pyrazines and furfuryl alcohol, typical roasted aroma and nutty aroma were slightly increased in later plucking period.

  • Many kinds of acetosolv lignin including ricestraw and spruce lignin were pyrolyzed. and liquefied in the autoclave reactor using 50% tetralin and m-cresol solution respectively as soluble solvent and Co-Mo as catalyst. In order to promote deoxyhydrogenolysis reaction $H_2$ gas was supplied into the reactor. The ratio between lignin and the soluble solvent are lg and 10cc. The reaction conditions are $200^{\circ}-700^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature, 10-50 atms of reaction pressure and 100-500rpm of the reactor stirrer. By the deoxyhydrogenolysis liquefaction reaction, the main chemical structures of lignin which are aryl-alkyl-${\beta}$-0-4 ether, phenylcoumaran and biphenyl etc. are easily destroyed into liqufied aromatic compounds and aliphatic compunds linked with aromatic compounds. The percent yield of monomeric phenols on the weight bvase of lignin reacted reached to 12-14% by the chemical analytic GC-MS etc.
