  • The management of oyster shell disposal is an ongoing challenge in the southern coast of Korea because of continuously dumping the oyster shell in environment. Oyster shell wastes could be a biocidal alternative after calcination using a heat treatment. Calcined oyster shell is normally obtained through thermally conversion of $CaCO_3$ (main component in oyster shell (96%)) into CaO. This study provides a brief overview of oyster shell disposal and its potential as an antimicrobial agent with a focus on calcination process, antimicrobial mechanisms, and packaging applications.

  • This work studies the behaviour of a steel portal frame selection under fire exposure, considering both span lengths and fire exposure times as variables. Such structures combine carbon steel (S275), fireproof micro-alloyed steel (FR), and coatings of intumescent paint with variable thicknesses, improving thereby the flame retardant behaviour of the steel structure. Thus, the main contribution of this study is the optimization of the portal frames by combining both steels, analysing the resulting costs influence on the final dimensions. Besides, the topological optimization of each steel component within the structure is also defined, in accordance with the following variables: weather conditions, span, paint thickness, and cost of steel. The results mainly confirmed that using both FR and S275 grades with intumescent painting is the Pareto optimum when considering performance, feasibility and costs of such portal frames widely used for industrial facilities.

  • When designing a new RNSS signal, the performance analysis for the legacy signal providing the same service, is required to determine the performance requirements. However, there are few studies on the secured service (SS) signal performance analysis, and the waveform is the only published information on the signal design component of the SS signal. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce several figures-of-merit (FoMs) that can be used for performance analysis in terms of the waveform. And then, we calculate the FoMs, such as autocorrelation main peak to secondary peak ratio (AMSR), spectral efficiency, Gabor bandwidth, multipath error, and jamming resistance quality factor, for the existing SS signals and discuss the analysis results. Finally, we conclude that the superior waveform for each FoM is different, and that the consideration of the trade-off relationship between the FoMs is required for waveform design.

  • Silybin is the main component of Cardus marianus extracts (Silymarin) originated from Silybum marianum, called as milk thistle. It has a hepato-protective effect and is used clinically for the treatment of liver disease. But it is water-insoluble and is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in very low oral bioavailability. Polymeric mixed-micelle precursor formulation containing surfactants, co-solvents, and block-co polymers with Cardus marianus extracts was made to enhance the dissolution rate of silybin and encapsulated with soft gelatin capsule. • Sopungsungi-won has been used as a traditional medicine for diabetes and it has been proved evidently as a potential remedy for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Both in vivo and in vitro experiments with water extract of Sopungsungi-won have been reported to exhibit anti-diabetic effects in our previous studies. In the present study, we have chosen Rheum undulatum (RU), which is the main component of Sopungsungi-won, to examine its anti-apoptotic effect on pancreatic b-cells, HIT-T15, against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H$_2$O$_2$). • Cinnamaldehyde is the main component of cinnamon bark oil and show several biological activities such as anti-tumor, anti-fungal, anti-mutagenic and anti-inflammatory effects. A couple of studies have investigated how the natural compound exerts its anti-inflammatory effect. In despite of numerous investigations, the biological mechanism of effects belong to cinnamaldehyde remain unclear. We isolated 2-hydroxycinnamaldehyde(HCA) from the bark of Cinnamomun cassia Blume and reported a various of biological activities of HCA. (omitted)

  • Recent studies have suggested that the cerebral ischemia induced the neuronal cell death by mediating multiple mechanisms with necrosis and/or apoptosis. The present study examined neuroprotective mechanism of aloesin against transient focal cerebral ischemia. Aloesin. main component of aloe possesses various biological activates such as wound healing. anti-gastric ulcer. and chemopreventive activity. Transient focal cerebral ischemia was induced by 120 min MCAO. (omitted)

  • In order to design a propeller with high efficiency and excellent cavitation performance, theoretical and experimental studies on the cavitation and noise characteristics according to the blade section shape are essential. In general, sheet cavitation, bubble cavitation, and cloud cavitation are the main causes of hull vibration and propeller surface erosion. However vortex cavitation, which has the greatest influence on the noise level because the fastest CIS in ship propeller, has been researched for a long time and studies have been conducted recently to control it. In this experiment, the development process of cavitation was measured by using three dimensional wings with two different wing section and wing tip shapes, and the noise level at that time was evaluated. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between cavitation inception and hydrodynamic force using three component load cell and we measured the velocity field of wing wake using LDV.

  • This study proposed a specific preliminary structural design procedure of the main wing for a small scale WIG vehicle to meet the target weight of the system requirement. The high stiffness and strength Carbon-Epoxy material was used for lightness, and the foam sandwich type structure at the upper skin and the spar webs was adopted for improvement of structural stability. After structural design, wing joint part was designed. Through investigation on structural design result, design modification was performed. After design modification, even thought the designed wing weight was a little bit heavier than the target wing weight, the structural safety and stability of the final design feature was confirmed.
