One of the main degradation mechanisms in steam generator tubes is stress corrosion cracking induced by residual stress. The resulting damages can cause tube bursting or leakage of the primary water which contains radioactivity. Shot peening technique has been used to prevent stress corrosion crack growth in steam generator tubes. In order to investigate the shot peening effect on stress corrosion cracking stress intensity factors are calculated for the semi-elliptical surface crack which is located in residual stress region. The residual stress distribution in steam generator tubes is obtained from the simple model proposed by Frederick et al.

The purpose of this study is to develop a fault detection and diagnosis scheme that can monitor process fault and instrument fault of a steam generator. The suggested scheme consists of a Kalman filter and two bias estimators. Method of detecting process and instrument fault in a steam generator uses the mean test on the residual sequence of Kalman filter, designed for the unfailed system, to make a fault decision. Once a fault is detected, two bias estimators are driven to estimate the fault and to discriminate process fault and instrument fault. In case of process fault, the fault diagnosis of outlet temperature, feed-water heater and main steam control value is considered. In instrument fault, the fault diagnosis of steam genrator's three instruments is considered. Computer simulation tests show that on-line prompt fault detection and diagnosis can be performed very successfully.
Recently, the common concern of nuclear power industry in the development of technology mitigating and preventing the aging of steam generator tubes prevails, because the trends of steam generator flaws at Uljin unit #1,2 and KSNP(Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant) impose a burden on the operation of nuclear power plant. While the regulatory agency is demanding the establishment of the advanced general performance maintenance system, the steam generator management program adapting advanced technology is being developed which may comply with EPRI PWR SG Guidelines based on NEI 97-06 ‘ General Guidelines including all the maintenance aspects consist of the tube integrity assessment criteria, repair limit, allowable leakage level, water chemistry will be composed in order to obtain the approval of regulatory agency and be applied to Nuclear power plant early 2005. This presentation is to introduce maintenance state including SG tube degradation and main contents of advanced SG management program being developed, and futhermore update present and future plan, and estimate the alternation after the completion.

Performance of a steam reformer can be improved by using a coaxial cylindrical reactor, because the design can enhance the heat transfer for the steam reforming reaction, which is the one of main rate-determining steps of overall reactions. The objective of this study is to investigate the coaxial cylindrical reactor numerically. Pseudo-homogeneous model and one medium approach are incorporated for the chemical reactions, and models are validated with experimental results. The catalyst of the coaxial cylindrical reactor is 67% for one of the cylindrical reactor, but fuel conversion of the coaxial cylindrical reactor is increased by 10%. Heat flux profiles are investigated by modified Nusselt number and heat flux which is transported from the product gas to the catalyst bed affecting performance of the steam reformer.
There are three main devices such as boiler producing steam, turbine driving generator and generator producing electricity. An electrical generator in power plant is driven and maintained its speed at rated by steam turbine which is coupled into generator directly. Therefore after the steam turbine reaches its rated speed and the generator gets into parallel operation with power grid, the electrical power can be increased by turbine controller or governor. The first governor was invented by James Watts for the steam engine to be maintained at a constant speed. The first governor by him was mechanical type with fly balls. The electrical type governor was created due to the progress of electronic devices such as operational amplifiers or integrated circuits. and Today digital electronic type of governor is being widely used in most prime movers.
There are three main devices such as boiler producing steam, turbine driving generator and generator producing electricity. An electrical generator in power plant is driven and maintained its speed at rated by steam turbine which is coupled into generator directly. Turbine auxiliary devices such as condenser, deaerator, feed water heater, gland steam condenser, pump recirculation equipment, feed water pump, and so on should be operated well so that the steam turbine exert its maximum efficiency. There are many control loop such as hot well level and condenser recirculation, deaerator level, pegging steam pressure, feed water heater level, feed water pump recirculation. In this paper condenser level control and deaerator level control are going to be described.
Servovalves are widely used in industrial areas in order to control the position of large steam valves which regulate steam flow to prime mover. We must control the position of large steam valves to regulate flow of working fluids in the process. The small pilot valves are used to regulate the large main valves in case that the pressure of control fluids supplied to servovalves is low about $12kg/cm^2$. But, in case that the pressure of control fluids supplied to servovalves is high enough about $110kg/cm^2$, the pilot valves are not needed and servovalves can control directly the large main valves due to its large working forces. Additionally, the basic structures of armature coil should be different according to the types of control system even in the same servovalve. This paper compares and describes some integral types of flow control.

In this paper, we proposed the method to design fuzzy controller using the experience of the operating expert and experimental numeric data for the robust control about the noise and disturbance instead of the traditional PID controller for the main steam temperature control of the thermal power plant. The temperature of main steam temperature process has to be controlled uniformly for the stable electric power output. The process has the problem of the hunting for the cases of various disturbances. In that case, the manual action of the operator happened to be introduced in some cases. We adopted the TSK (Takagi-Sugeno-Kang) model as the fuzzy controller and designed the fuzzy rules using the informations extracted directly from the real plant and various operating condition to solve the above problems and to apply practically. We implemented the real fuzzy controller as the Function Block module in the DCS(Distributed Control System) and evaluated the feasibility through the experimental results of the simulation.
Concerns over reliability assessments of the main components in nuclear power plants (NPPs) related to aging and continuous operation have increased. The conventional reliability assessment for main components uses experimental correlations under general conditions. Most NPPs have been operating in Korea for a long time, and it is predictable that NPPs operating for the same number of years would show varying extent of aging and degradation. The conventional reliability assessment does not adequately reflect the characteristics of an individual plant. Therefore, the reliability of individual components and an individual plant was estimated according to operating data and conditions. It is essential to reflect aging as a characteristic of individual NPPs, and this is performed through prognostics. To handle this difficulty, in this paper, the general path model/Bayes, a data-based prognostic method, was used to update the reliability estimated from the generic database. As a case study, the authors consider the aging for steam generator tubes in NPPs and demonstrate the suggested methodology with data obtained from the probabilistic algorithm for the steam generator tube assessment program.
A number of components installed in the secondary system of nuclear power plants are exposed to aging mechanisms such as FAC (Flow-Accelerated Corrosion), Cavitation, Flashing, and LDIE (Liquid Droplet Impingement Erosion). Those aging mechanisms can lead to thinning of the components. In April 2013, one (1) inch small bore piping branched from the main steam line experienced leakage resulting from wall thinning in a 1,000 MWe Korean PWR nuclear power plant. During the normal operation, extracted steam from the main steam line goes to condenser through the small bore piping. The leak occurred in the downstream of an orifice. A control valve with vertical flow path was placed on in front of the orifice. This paper deals with UT (Ultrasonic Test) thickness data, SEM images, and numerical simulation results in order to analyze the extent of damage and the cause of leakage in the small bore piping. As a result, it is concluded that the main cause of the small bore pipe wall thinning is liquid droplet impingement erosion. Moreover, it is observed that the leak occurred at the reattachment point of the vortex flow in the downstream side of the orifice.
