An Empirical Study on the Effects of e-Mail Marketing : A focus on e-Mail Campaign for Credit Card Consumers (이메일 마케팅 성과에 관한 연구: 신용카드 고객을 대상으로 한 캠페인을 중심으로)

  • E-mail marketing is the cheapest channel in target marketing. The channel works amazingly well for marketers who know how to use it. The e-mail marketers are able to integrate transactional and behavioral data to improve the targeting content of e-mail marketing campaigns. The cost in e-mail marketing is low and e-mail marketing makes no pollution. But, the e-mail response rate is lower than all the other channels. So, it is very hard for companies to increase their sales volumes, though the companies are ready to execute e-mail marketing campaigns on the side of computer systems. Marketers can send messages easily to target customers compared to other channels. But, the possibility to be read by the customers is low. Normal e-mails are continually devalued by spam mails. This study shows the influence of e-mail marketing to increase sales used by credit cards, on the basis of the real data promoted by A bank, in the Republic of Korea. The analysis on the traits of the respondent can help marketers to target customers. If additional studies on the response prediction model on the basis of traits of potential respondents are done, the targeting method to increase the effectiveness of e-mail marketing will be better structured and organized.

  • In this study, we analyze the historical data of postal matter amount in korea, various social indexes concerning mail volume and postal data in developed countries. After correlation analysis between some variables, we suggest a new logistic model for forecasting the future mail volume. Finally, we forecast the mail volume in korea about 20 years hereafter.

  • This study designs and implements a new approach to the classification of e-mail requests from customer based on machine learning techniques. The work on building an electronic mall classifier can be cast into the framework of text classification, since an e-mail is a viewed as a document, and judgement of interest is viewed as a class level given to the e-mail document. It is also implemented an e-mall based automated response system that integrate with Call Center in a practical use.

  • In this paper, a multimedia mail including video, sound, graphic data has been proposed as the next generation mail of the text based mail. In order to develop the multimedia mail, the most outstanding problem is the fact that the multimedia data are too huge to send them to the receiving end directly. The fact of big data may cause many problems in both transferring and storing the data of the multimedia mail. Our main idea is to separate between a control program for the multimedia presentation and multimedia data. Since the size of a control program is as small as a plain text mail, it has no problem to send it attached to the internet mail to the receiver directly. Instead, the big multimedia data themselves may remain on the sender's computer or be sent to a designated server so that the data may be transferred to the receiver only when the receiver activates the play of the multimedia mail. In this scheme, our research focus is paced on the buffer management and the thread scheduling for the real time play of the multimedia mail on internet. Another problem is to provide an easy way of editing a multimedia presentation for an ordinary people having no programming knowledge. For the purposed, VIP(Visual Interface Player) has been used and the results or multimedia mail implemented on LAN has been described.

  • E-mail has been eidely used for unformation delivery as an Inernet serive. As multimedia etchnologies are developed rapidly, most of the recent Unternet infornation servies support multimedia data. E-mail system also needs to suport multimedia nesage. But Internet mail servise using simple maiol transfer protocol(SMTP) speci-fied in RFC 821/822 handles only ASCII text messages repressented with 7-bit code. Each line the message has the length limitation as well. Those are why it cannot satisfy the diverse user'w demands. Multipuepose Unternet mail extensions(MIMZE), which is a modification and supplement of RFC 822,was proposed for supporting transportation of multimedia data.It can solve the limitations of sizes and types in contents of a message. In this study the E-mail system has been designed and implemented according to the MIME standard in order to solve the limitations of transpotation of messages regardless of the message content type. Hypertext markup language(HTML)syntax is applied to the mail system, and so it is possible to display a message consisting of differnt media as an intergrated from for the purpose of better understanding a message. No application program is needed for displaying a message including image data,and convenience for user is considered in the system. The futuer work is to improve the E-mail system so that it may support motion pictures and sound information,Thereby tge perfor multimeda E-mail system providing inergrated user's wiew will be developed.

  • With rapidly developing Internet applications, an e-mail has been considered as one of the most popular methods for exchanging information. The e-mail, however, has a serious problem that users ran receive a lot of unwanted e-mails, what we called, spam mails, which cause big problems economically as well as socially. In order to block and filter out the spam mails, many researchers and companies have performed many sorts of research on spam filtering. In general, users of e-mail have different criteria on deciding if an e-mail is spam or not. Furthermore, in e-mail client systems, users do different actions according to a spam mail or not. In this paper, we propose a mail filtering system using such user actions. The proposed system consists of two steps: One is an action inference step to draw user actions from an e-mail and the other is a mail classification step to decide if the e-mail is spam or not. All the two steps use incremental learning, of which an algorithm is IB2 of TiMBL. To evaluate the proposed system, we collect 12,000 mails of 12 persons. The accuracy is $81{\sim}93%$ according to each person. The proposed system outperforms, at about 14% on the average, a system that does not use any information about user actions.

Hacking Mail Profiling by Applying Case Based Reasoning (사례기반추론기법을 적용한 해킹메일 프로파일링)

  • Many defensive mechanisms have been evolved as new attack methods are developed. However, APT attacks using e-mail are still hard to detect and prevent. Recently, many organizations in the government sector or private sector have been hacked by malicious e-mail based APT attacks. In this paper, first, we built hacking e-mail database based on the real e-mail data which were used in attacks on the Korean government organizations in recent years. Then, we extracted features from the hacking e-mails for profiling them. We design a case vector that can describe the specific characteristics of hacking e-mails well. Finally, based on case based reasoning, we made an algorithm for retrieving the most similar case from the hacking e-mail database when a new hacking e-mail is found. As a result, hacking e-mails have common characteristics in several features such as geo-location information, and these features can be used for classifying benign e-mails and malicious e-mails. Furthermore, this proposed case based reasoning algorithm can be useful for making a decision to analyze suspicious e-mails.

Sender Authentication Mechanism based on DomainKey with SMS for Spam Mail Sending Protection (대량 스팸메일 발송 방지를 위한 SMS 기반 DomainKey 방식의 송신자 인증 기법)

  • Although E-mail system is considered as a most important communication media, 'Spam' is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Therefore advanced anti-spam techniques are required to basically reduce its transmission volume on sender mail server or MTA, etc. In this study, we propose a new sender authentication model with encryption function based on modified DomainKey with SMS for Spam mail protection. From the SMS message, we can get secret information used for verification of its real sender on e-mail message. And by distributing this secret information with SMS like out-of-band channel, we can also combine proposed modules with existing PGP scheme for secure e-mail generation and authentication steps. Proposed scheme provide enhanced authentication function and security on Spam mail protection function because it is a 'dual mode' authentication mechanism.

A Case Based e-Mail Response System for Customer Support

  • Due to the rapid growth of Internet, means of communication with customers in a traditional customer support environment such as telephone calls are being replaced by mainly e-mail in a Web-based customer support system. Although such a Web-based support is efficient and promises potential benefits for firms, including reduced transaction costs, reduced time, and high quality of support, there are some difficulties associated with responding to many types of customer's inbound e-mails appropriately. As many types of e-mail are received, considerable attention is being paid to methods for increasing the efficiency of managing and responding e-mails. This research proposes an intelligent system for managing customer's inbound e-mails in organizations by applying case based reasoning technique for responding to various customers' inbound e-mails more effectively. In this approach, a case is represented as a frame-typed data structure corresponding to an inbound e-mail, keywords, and its reply e-mail. In the retrieval procedure, keywords and affinity set is developed to index a case, and then the case is represented as a vector, a case vector. Also, cosines value is calculated to measure the similarity between a new inbound e-mail and the cases in the case base. In the adaptation procedure, we provide several adaptation strategies to adapt and modify the retrieved case. The strategies guide to make an outbound e-mail using product databases, databases for customer support, etc. Additionally, the Web-based system architecture is proposed to implement our methodology. The proposed methodology and system will be helpful for developing more efficient Web-based customer support.

Mutimedia Mail Authoring System Providing Message Integration (메시지 통합성을 제공하는 멀티미디어 메일 저작 시스템)

  • E-mail system has been widely used for information transmission. As multimedia technologies are developed, many Internet services support multimedia. E-mail system only transmits 7bit ASCII data using simple mail transfer protocol(SMTP) specified in RFC 821. E-mail system can't support the authoring and the transmission of multimedia data. In this study multimedia mail authoring system has been designed and implemented in order to provide message integration. Multimedia messages can be authored and transformed into text types with this system. Transformed messages are transmitted from sender's mail transfer agent (MTA) to receiver's MTA by means of SMTP. Messages can be authored in hypertext markup language (HTML) including text, image, audio and video. This system provides integrated messages which consist or various media. BASE64 Encoding method is used in order to transform multimedia messages into text types. Received mails are managed by multimedia user agent (MUA) which is proposed in this study. Convenience for user is improved in this system.
