Although the exterior wood such as column may frequently contact with liquid water, little work has been found to measure liquid water absorption in wood. To investigate the moisture diffusivity of wood in the longitudinal direction including bound water and free water movement, liquid water absorption test was conducted at the room temperature. The order of magnitude for absorption coefficient and diffusivity was Japanese elm, horn beam, hemlock, spruce, radiata pine, and painted maple. The Boltzmann transformation method was used to determine the diffusivity from measured moisture content distributions in the absorption test. The shape of the curve representing the dependence of diffusivity with moisture content was similar in test samples. The diffusivity decreased with increasing moisture content until around the fiber saturation point and then increased at the nonhygroscopic region, which ranged from $10^{-10}$ to $10^{-7}m^2/s$.
This study applied the choice experiment (CE) method to measure values of statistical lives from multi-attributed mortality risk reduction choices. The four characteristics of mortality risk (i.e. cause of death, voluntariness of mortality risk, timing of death, magnitude of mortality risk reduction) are utilized to design the alternatives of choice sets. The estimation results for the multinomial logit model show that individuals are willing to pay 27,930 won per year for a change from the status quo to a $\frac{1}{100}$ mortality risk reduction for 10 years, 116,773 won per year for mortality risk reduction associated with adults, 97,682 won per year for voluntary mortality risk reduction, 77,234 won per year for involuntary mortality risk reduction. There were several estimates of VSL related to different attributes of mortality risk. The mean VSLs of infant/child/young adult ranged from 1,165 million won to 1,367 million won. The mean VSLs ranged from 1,631 million won to 1,833 million won for adult, and were between 1,128 million won and 1,330 million won for old person.

This paper presents a implementation method of reliable speed limitation controller considering motor parameter variation in high speed operation. In spinning process of drum washing machine, speed increase has to be limited when unallowable imbalance mass is detected. Otherwise, severe noise and vibration can happen because noise and vibration are proportional to imbalance mass. To detect imbalance mass, d-axis current magnitude is used. However, we have to compensate for back-emf and power supply variation by means of detecting them because d-axis current is affected by both of them. On the other hand, we have to carefully estimate back-emf because back-emf is affected by stator resistance variation and inverter voltage error. Stator resistance variation can happen by manufacturing process for mass production or temperature variation in running. And there are inverter voltage errors between command voltage from micro-computer to inverter and real voltage from inverter to motor because of rising and falling time delay and turn-on resistance of power semiconductor switch. To solve this problem, we propose 2-step align current injection method which is to inject step-wise current right before starting. By this method, we can simply obtain stator resistance by ratio of voltage without inverter voltage error and current, and we can measure inverter voltage error. So we can obtain more exact model current, and then by simple calculation with compensation gain, we can estimate more accurate motor back-emf. We show that this method works well. It is verified through experiments.
The effects of Reynolds number on the non-nulling calibration of a typical cone-type five-hole probe have been investigated for the representative Reynolds numbers in turbomachinery. The pitch and yaw angles are changed from - 35 degrees to 35 degrees with an angle interval of 5 degrees at six probe Reynolds numbers in range between $6.60{\times}10^3\;and\;3.17{\times}10^4$. The result shows that not only each calibration coefficient itself but also its Reynolds number dependency is affected significantly by the pitch and yaw angles. The Reynolds-number effects on the pitch- and yaw-angle coefficients are noticeable when the absolute values of the pitch and yaw angles are smaller than 20 degrees. The static-pressure coefficient is sensitive to the Reynolds number nearly all over the pitch- and yaw-angle range. The Reynolds-number effect on the total-pressure coefficient is found remarkable when the absolute values of the pitch and yaw angles are larger than 20 degrees. Through a typical non-nulling reduction procedure, actual reduced values of the pitch and yaw angles, static and total pressures, and velocity magnitude at each Reynolds number are obtained by employing the calibration coefficients at the highest Reynolds number ($Re=3.17{\times}10^4$) as input reference calibration data. As a result, it is found that each reduced value has its own unique trend depending on the pitch and yaw angles. Its general tendency is related closely to the variation of the corresponding calibration coefficient with the Reynolds number. Among the reduced values, the reduced total pressure suffers the most considerable deviation from the measured one and its dependency upon the pitch and yaw angles is most noticeable. In this study, the root-mean-square data as well as the upper and lower bounds of the reduced values are reported as a function of the Reynolds number. These data would be very useful in the estimation of the Reynolds-number effects on the non-nulling calibration.

The dynamic responses of human standing postural control were investigated when subjects were exposed to long-term horizontal vibration. It was hypothesized that the motion of standing posture complexity mainly occurs in the mid-sagittal plane. The motor-driven support platform was designed as a source of vibration. The AC Servo-controlled motors produced anterior/posterior (AP) motion. The platform acceleration and the trunk angular velocity were used as the input and the output of the system, respectively. A method was proposed to identify the complexity of the standing posture dynamics. That is, during AP platform motion, the subject's knee, hip and neck were tightly constrained by fixing assembly, so the lower extremity, trunk and head of the subject's body were individually immovable. Through this method, it was assumed that the ankle joint rotation mainly contributed to maintaining their body balance. Four subjects took part in this study. During the experiment, the random vibration was generated at a magnitude of $0.44m/s^2$, and the duration of each trial was 40 seconds. Measured data were estimated by the coherence function and the frequency response function for analyzing the dynamic behavior of standing control over a frequency range from 0.2 to 3 Hz. Significant coherence values were found above 0.5 Hz. The estimation of frequency response function revealed the dominant resonance frequencies between 0.60 Hz and 0.68 Hz. On the basis of our results illustrated here, the linear model of standing postural control was further concluded.

In this paper, an effective stereo image compression and reconstruction technique using a new adaptively compensated-disparity prediction scheme is proposed. That is, by adaptively predicting the mutual correlation between the stereo image using the proposed method, the bandwidth of the stereo input image can be compressed to the level of the conventional 2D image and the predicted image also can be effectively reconstructed using this transmitted reference image and disparity data in the receiver. Especially, in the proposed method, once the feature values are extracted from the input stereo image, then the matching window size for the predicted image reconstruction is adaptively selected in accordance with the magnitude of this feature values. From this adaptive disparity estimation method, reduction of the mismatching probability of the disparity vectors is expected and as a result, the image quality in the reconstructed image can be improved. In addition, from some experiments using the CCETT's stereo images of 'Fichier', 'Manege' and 'Tunnel', it is shown that the proposed method improves the PSNR of the reconstructed image to about 9.08 dB on average by comparing with that of the conventional methods. And also, it is found that there is almost no difference between the original image and the predicted image reconstructed through the proposed method by comparison to that of the conventional methods.

In this study, we numerically analyze fatigue cracks of curved pipes under cyclic loadings. Numerical models of the curved pipes are developed. The models are verified with the experimental results in terms of fatigue lives and development process of the fatigue cracks. Erosion technique is applied to the solid elements in order to describe shapes of the fatigue cracks and estimate the fatigue lives. Also, development of the fatigue cracks is described by allocating sufficient number of solid elements in the radial direction. Fatigue lives and shapes of the crack resulting from numerical analyses show good agreement with those of the experiment considering ${\pm}100mm$ displacement. In addition, estimation of the fatigue life caused by displacement with different magnitude is conducted. We expect that the model can be applied to understand the relation between fatigue lives and characteristics of pipes or loadings.

A two-stroke diesel engine and a propeller normally adopted in large merchant ships are regarded as major ship vibration sources. They are directly connected and generate various excitation components proportional to the rotating speed of diesel engine. Among the components, the magnitude of two excitation components with the same frequency generated by both engine and propeller can be compensated by the adjustment of their phase difference. It can be done by the optimization of propeller assembly angle but requires a number of burdensome trials to find the optimal angle. In this paper, the efficient estimation method to determine optimal propeller assembly angle is proposed. Its application requires the axial vibration measurement in sea trial and the numerical vibration analysis for propulsion shafting which can be substituted by additional vibration measurement after one-trial modification of propeller assembly angle. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, the phase difference between two fifth order excitation components generated by both diesel engine and propeller of a real ship is calculated by the finite element analysis and its result is indirectly validated by the comparison of axial vibration responses at intermediate shaft obtained by the numerical analysis and the measurement in sea trial. Finally, it is numerically confirmed that axial vibration response at intermediate shaft at a resonant speed can be decreased more than 87 % if the optimal propeller assembly angle determined by the proposed method is applied.

To estimate the effect of rainfall on soil respiration, soil $CO_2$ efflux was measured with a manipulation of rainfall interception at a broad-leaved deciduous forest in western Japan from 20 February to 19 November 2001. The diurnal patterns of soil respiration observed at the intercepted subplot ($F_c$) were quite similar to those of soil temperature at 0.2 m depth with a maximum around midnight and a minimum from noon to early afternoon. Such diurnal patterns have not been observed in the previous studies at the same study site under natural conditions (which manifested no clear diurnal variations). Furthermore, the magnitudes of $F_c$ showed substantial differences (e.g., ~50% reduction under water-limited conditions) compared to those of the potential soil respiration under natural conditions ($F_{cal}$). These findings demonstrate that rainfall events not only affected the magnitude of soil $CO_2$ efflux but also modified the vertical structure of soil temperature, thereby altering diurnal patterns of soil respiration.
This paper concerns the applications of the Kalman filter to navigation and the develment of computer programs of the navigational calculations. Methods to apply the Kalman filter to celestial fix, fix by cross bearing and cocked hat are proposed, and numerical simulations under various noise conditiions are conducted. The accuracy of the optimal positions obtained by the Kalman filter is compared with that of the fixed positiions by radial error method. In the case of celestial fix, an algorithm to estimate the optimal positions by using the linear Kalman filter is presented. The optimal positions by the Kalman filter are compared with the running fixes and with the most probable positions obtained from a single line of position. It is confirmed that the resutls of the proposed method are more accurate than the others. In practical piloting, bearings are generally measured intermittently and the measurement process is nonlinear. It is, therefore, difficult for us to apply the Kalman filter to fix by cross bearing. In order to be used in such an unfavorable case, the extended Kalman filter is revised and the aplicability of the revised extended Kalman filter is checked by numerical simulation under various noise conditions. In a cocked hat, an inside or outside fix is dependent only upon azimuth spread, if the error of each line of position is assumed to be equal both in magnitude and sign. A new technique of selecting a ship's position between an inside fix and an outside fix in a cocked hat by using fix determinant derived from the equation of three lines of position is also presented. The relations among the optimal position by Kalman filter, incentre (or excentre) and random error centtre of the cocked hat are discussed theoretically and the accuracy of the optimal position is compared with that of the others by numerical simulation.
