  • Recently much attention has been paid to a guided wave due to its effective applicability to long range and fast inspection of structures. In guided wave based NDE, the appropriate selection of wave modes is one of important factors since the test performance is highly dependent on which mode of guided waves is employed. As far as plate-like structures are concerned, so far, SH guided wave has not been frequently applied compared to Lamb waves, which is mostly caused by the lack of proper and convenient transducers to generate and measure the SH waves. In this investigation, a new small-sized SH guided wave transducer based on magnetostriction is proposed. The present transducer was designed to be modular and be used with shear couplant to avoid the inconvenience of the existing magnetostrictive patch transducers, which comprises the ferromagnetic patch tightly bonded to a structure. The wave transduction mechanism and the detailed configuration of the present transducer are presented. Experimental verification is also conducted on test specimens and the results confirm the good performance of the present transducer module.

  • Pipe wall thinning is one of severe problems on structural safety in nuclear power plants. A guided wave can be a proper tool for the fast evaluation or monitoring. As for gradual wall thinnings, however, low sensitivity caused by the low reflection coefficient limits the use of the guided wave. In this work, instead of the guided wave reflection at the wall thinning, the variation of dispersion characteristics is concerned. SH waves were employed due to several advantages and the magnetostrictive patch transducers were used for the excitation and sensing of the SH waves. The proposed method were verified with some experiments and showed the feasibility as an effective tool for the inspection of gradual wall thinning.

  • Hyperbolic metamaterials in which waves can only propagate through the radial direction have achieved much attention these days due to their capability of sub-wavelength resolution. In this work, the realization and optimization of hyperbolic elastic metamaterials are mainly studied. To obtain a new hyperbolic elastic metamaterial, a specially-engineered mass-spring system is introduced. Based on the mass-spring system, the hyperbolic elastic metamaterials are proposed and realized. In addition, the sub-wavelength resolution of the proposed hyperbolic elastic metamaterial is verified by ultrasonic elastic wave experiments. For the experiments, specially-designed magnetostrictive patch transducers are developed to realize two sub-wavelength elastic wave sources. Furthermore, the proposed hyperbolic elastic metamaterial is optimized to maximize its operating frequency ranges by the topology optimization method.
