  • In this study, the electron behavior was investigated numerically in order to obtain guidelines for design and operation of a new plasma source by a magnetic neutral loop discharge (NLD). The optimum plasma production was investigated by using a 3-dimensional simulation model which enables the electron behavior calculation from source region to downstream region. The results showed that the high-density plasma produced around the magnetic neutral loop (NL) is transferred from the NL region to the downstream region along magnetic force lines. Also the avaraged electron energy is increased with the normalized RF electric field (F), which can be used to characterize the plasma production efficiency of NLD system. Considering the relation between F and plasma production, in-depth plasma control can be achieved at a given specific process condition.

  • This paper introduces an approach to enhance the performance of magnetic manipulation systems for microrobot actuation. A variety of eight-electromagnet configurations have been proposed to date. The previous study revealed that achieving 5 degrees of freedom (5-DOF) control necessitates at least eight electromagnets without encountering workspace singularities. But so far, the research considering the influence of iron cores embedded in electromagnets has not been conducted. This paper offers a novel approach to optimizing electromagnet configurations that effectively consider the influence of iron cores. The proposed methodology integrates probabilistic optimization with finite element methods (FEM), using Bayesian Optimization (BO). The Bayesian optimization aims to optimize the worst-case magnetic force generation for enhancing the performance of magnetic manipulation system. The proposed simulation-based model achieves approximately 20% improvement compared to previous systems in terms of actuation performance. This study has the potential for enhancing magnetic manipulation systems for microrobot control, particularly in medical and microscale technology applications.

  • This paper shows a new magnetic field analysis of an interior permanent magnet (IPM) machines with an axial overhang structure wherein the rotor axial length exceeds that of the stator. The rotor overhang used to increase torque density of the radial flux machine is difficult to analyze because of extra consideration of axial direction, and thus it is general for machine designer to take 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) capable of considering both radial and axial complicated geometry in the machine. However, it requires too much computing time for preliminary design especially for optimization process. Therefore, in this paper a 2-D analytic method using a lumped magnetic circuit model (LMCM) is proposed to overcome the problem. For the analysis of overhang effect, the magnetic circuit is separated and solved from overhang and non-overhang regions respectively. For the validation of proposed concept, 3-D finite element analysis (FEA) is performed. From the analysis results, it is shown that our new proposed method presents good performance in terms of calculating electromotive force (EMF) and torque within a short time. Therefore, the proposed model can be useful in design of IPM with an overhang structure.

  • Levitation force of a new magnetic levitation system using a super-conducting bulk magnet(SBM) and a permanent magnet(PM) was numerically calculated. The non-linear J-E relation of a SBM was modeled using a critical state model and iteration method, and demagnetization of a PM was considered using a demagnetization curve of a real PM. The maximum limitation of levitation force was found according to increasing the trapped field in a SBM. Finite element method was used for numerical calculation.

  • A general model of equations of the two-temperature theory of generalized thermoelasticity is applied to study the wave propagation in a fiber-reinforced magneto-thermoelastic medium in the context of the three-phase-lag model and Green-Naghdi theory without energy dissipation. The material is a homogeneous isotropic elastic half-space. The exact expression of the displacement components, force stresses, thermodynamic temperature and conductive temperature is obtained by using normal mode analysis. The variations of the considered variables with the horizontal distance are illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results of the two theories in the absence and presence of a magnetic field as well as a two-temperature parameter. A comparison is also made between the results of the two theories in the absence and presence of reinforcement.

  • Bearingless switched reluctance motors (SRM) have combined advantages of conventional SRM and magnetic bearings. Therefore in this paper based on novel structure of Bearingless SRM, an accurate mathematic model of radial force is deduced. Meanwhile in order to realize steady suspending, a novel radial force control method- Direct Instantaneous Radial Force Control (DIRFC) is presented. The effectiveness of new model and DIRFC is proved by the simulation results.

  • An axial electromagnetic levitation system using attractive force is a highly nonlinear system due to the nonlinearity of materials, variable air gap and flux density. To control the levitating system with large air gap, a conventional PID control based on the linear model is not satisfactory to obtain the desired performance and the position tracking control of the sinusoidal motion by simulation results. Thus, sliding mode control(SMC) based on the input-output linearization is suggested and evaluated by simulation and experimental approaches. Usefulness of the SMC to this system is conformed experimentally. If the expected variation of added mass can be included in the gain conditions and the model, the position control performance of the electromagnetic levitation system with large air gap will be improved with robustness.

  • This paper deals with control parameters deduction and dynamic analysis of hybrid thrust magnetic bearing(HTMB). The flux density at air-gap is obtained from system modeling which considers permanent magnet and electro magnet. The vertical force is derived from flux density using maxwell's stress tensor. An accurate linear model is obtained by using linear approximations of the attraction force around the nominal equilibrium point. The dynamic simulation of the HTMB using the PD controller is conducted and control parameters are deducted.

  • Transport of carbon and boron impurity ions parallel to magnetic field lines in the tokamak SOL (scrape-off layer) is numerically investigated for a one-dimensional steady state. The spatial distributions of density and velocity of the impurity ions in a steady state are calculated by finite difference method for a single-fluid model. The calculated results show that among forces acting on SOL particles thermal force produced tv plasma temperature gradient is a principal force determining the feature of impurity distribution profiles in the tokamak edge. However, strong collisional friction forces appearing dominant in front of the diverter plate restrain impurity ion flows due to temperature gradients from moving toward the midplane. Consequently, the stagnation point develops in the impurity flow by these two forces near the diverter region, in which ion flows change their directions. Impurity ions turn out to be accumulated at the stagnation points, where peaked profiles of highly-ionized state ions are relatively predominant over those of low-ionized state ions.
