  • MR(Magneto-rheological) fluid is smart fluid that can change its characteristics when magnetic fields are applied. Recently, many researches are going on this MR fluid for the application in a variety of areas including automobile shock absorbers. This paper describes the design procedure of a MR damper and the analysis results of its dynamic characteristics. MR fluid in the magnetic field shows initial yield shear stress and increasing resistive viscousity with final saturation thereafter. (omitted)

  • Iron nitride magnetic fluid was oxidized by exposing it to the air under normal atmospheric conditions. After exposure of 3.2 hours, the relative saturation magnetization of the iron nitride magnetic fluid is less than 0.4 compared to the value of the unexposed sample, and it is nearly zero after exposure for 1008 hours. The structure of the oxidized iron nitride is considered to be a non-magnetic hematites. The thickness of the oxidation layers of the iron-nitride particles are nearly the same, about 3 nm, regardless of the different particle sizes.

  • This paper presents the numerical algorithm that can obtain the surface configuration of the magnetic fluid seals. The magnetic field is computed by nonlinear finite element method considering the saturation of magnetic fluid and pole piece. The surface equilibrium condition in ferrohydrodynamics are used in algorithm. The influence of the surface configuration on the sealed pressure due to the magnetic, centrifugal and gravitational forces is analyzed and compared with other experimental results.

  • Magneto-Rheological Fluid (MRF) is a functional fluid in which flow characteristics change into magnetic force due to its magnetic particles. When the semi-active control device does not use MRF for a long time, precipitation of magnetic particles and abnormal control force occur. Thus, Electro Magneto-Rheological Fluid (EMRF), which improves the precipitation of magnetic particles for MRF and exhibits existing control performance, was developed in this study. First, the optimal mix proportion ratio was selected by conducting a precipitation experiment and a controlled force test by varying the content of grease based on the existing MRF components. Also, EMRF was applied to the shear-type damper to evaluate the control performance when applied to the control device. The cylinder-type damper was developed to apply to the structure, and control performance evaluation was conducted. The result confirmed that the precipitation of the magnetic particles was improved, while the damper using EMRF exhibited excellent control performance.

  • In this paper, the semi active mount featuring Magneto rheological fluid(MR Fluid) is proposed. MR fluid is suspension of micro sized magnetizable particles in a fluid medium, and its apparent viscosity can be varied by the applied strength of magnetic field. When the controllable MR fluid is applied to mechanical devices, the devices provide simple, rapid response interfaces between electronic controls and mechanical systems. The MR fluid is applied in the conventional fluid mount for improving its performance of the mount's isolation effect. A appropriate size of the MR mount is designed and manufactured on the basis of Bingham model of MR fluid. In addition, the field dependent damping forces of MR mount are evaluated with respect to the input frequency variation.

  • In this study, an analysis of natural convection of magnetic fluids in a closed-semicircular pipe was performed by the numerical methods. For the numerical method GSMAC method of Siliomis is used. From the results of numerical methods it is verified that the natural convection of the magnetic fluid, I investigated the nature convection phenomenon of the magnetic fluid with numerical analysis and was going to study the thermodynamic characteristic of the magnetic fluid. Because the effect of magnetic field control natural convection, we needed to find effective method to eliminate heat in the cure of heat transfer.

  • The phenomenology of liquid breakdown has been an area of interest for many years but is still not fully understood. Moreover, it was known that the behavior of magnetic nanoparticles in transformer oil could affect the dielectric breakdown voltage positively or negatively. In this study, we have imaged the magnetic nanoparticles in a transformer oil in-situ using an optical microscopic set-up and a microchannel according to the electric and magnetic fields applied. And we have calculated numerically dielectrophoresis and magnetophoresis forces, which must be the driving mechanisms to move magnetic nanoparticles in the fluid. It was found that when the electric field is applied the magnetic nanoparticles in the fluid experience an electrical force directed toward the place of maximum electric field strength. And when the external magnetic field is applied, the magnetic nanoparticles form long chains oriented along the direction of the field.

  • This paper presents the conversion parameter values of the magnetic properties of magnetic fluids. These values were determined for three magnetic fluid samples containing particles with diameters between 30 ${\AA}$ and 170 ${\AA}$. The factors that may affect the value of this parameter (size of particle, magnetic properties, the presence of clusters and aggregates) are also studied. The determined values for the conversion parameter (${\gamma}$) are between 0.25 and 0.76 and the determined limit value is 0.8. Because many applications require magnetic fluids with the saturation magnetization as high as possible and the viscosity as low as possible [1], it has been considered necessary to determine this parameter which describes the quality of magnetic fluids.

  • Fluid jet polishing is a method of jetting a fluid to polish a concave or free-form surface. However, the fluid jet method is difficult to form a stable polishing spot because of the lack of concentration. In order to solve this problem, MR fluid jet polishing system using an abrasive mixed with an MR fluid whose viscosity changes according to the intensity of a magnetic field is under study. MR fluid jet polishing is not easy to formulate for precise optimal conditions and material removal due to numerous fluid compositions and process conditions. Therefore, in this paper, quantitative data on the factors that have significant influence on the machining conditions are presented using various simulations and the correlation studies are conducted. In order to verify applicability of the fabricated MR fluid jet polishing system by nozzle diameter, the flow pattern and velocity distribution of MR fluid and polishing slurry of MR fluid jet polishing were analyzed by flow analysis and shear stress due to magnetic field changes was analyzed. The MR fluid of the MR fluid jet polishing and the flow pattern and velocity distribution of the polishing slurry were analyzed according to the nozzle diameter and the effects of nozzle diameter on the polishing effect were discussed. The analysis showed that the maximum shear stress was 0.45 mm at the diameter of 0.5 mm, 0.73 mm at 1.0 mm, and 1.24 mm at 1.5 mm. The cross-sectional shape is symmetrical and smooth W-shape is generated, which is consistent with typical fluid spray polishing result. Therefore, it was confirmed that the high-quality surface polishing process can be stably performed using the developed system.

  • In this study, vibration and stability of concrete pipes reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) conveying fluid are presented. Due to the existence of CNTs, the structure is subjected to magnetic field. The radial fore induced with fluid is calculated using Navier-Stokes equations. Characteristics of the equivalent composite are determined using Mori-Tanaka model. The concrete pipe is simulated with classical cylindrical shell model. Employing energy method and Hamilton's principal, the motion equations are derived. Frequency and critical fluid velocity of structure are obtained analytically based on Navier method for simply supported boundary conditions at both ends of the pipe. The effects of fluid, volume percent of CNTs, magnetic field and geometrical parameters are shown on the frequency and critical fluid velocity of system. Results show that with increasing volume percent of CNTs, the frequency and critical fluid velocity of concrete pipe are increased.
