In 1957, the first magnetic disk drive compatible with a movable head was introduced as an external file memory device for computer system. Since then, magnetic disks have been improved by increasing the recording density, which has brought about the development of a high performance thin film magnetic head. The thin film magnetic head has a magnetic circuit on a ceramic substrate using IC technology. The physical property of the substrate material is very important because it influences the tribology of head/disk interface and also manufacturing process of the head. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics, so called ALTIC, is known to be one of the best substrate materials which satisfies this property requirement. Even though the head is not in direct contact with the disk, frequent instantaneous contacts are unavoidable due to its high rotating speed and the close gap between them. This may cause damage in the magnetic recording media and, thus, it is very important that the magnetic head has a good wear resistance. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics has an excellent tribological property in head/disk interface. Manufacturing process of thin film head is similar to that of IC, which requires extremely smooth and flat surface of the substrate. The substrate must be readily sliced into the heads without chipping. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics has excellent machineability and mechanical properties. $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics was first developed at Nippon Tungsten Co. as cutting tool materials in 1968, which was further developed to be used as the substrate materials for thin film head in collaboration with Sumitomo Special Metals Co., Ltd. in 1981. Today, we supply more than 60% of the substrates for thin film head market in the world. In this paper, we would like to present the sintering process of $Al_{2}O_{3}$-TiC ceramics and its property in detail.
Atomic force microscopy/friction force microscopy (AFM/FFM) techniques are increasingly used for tribological studies of engineering surfaces at scales, ranging from atomic and molecular to microscales. These techniques have been used to study surface roughness, adhesion, friction, scratching/wear, indentation, detection of material transfer, and boundary lubrication and for nanofabrication/nanomachining purposes. Micro/nanotribological studies of single-crystal silicon, natural diamond, magnetic media (magnetic tapes and disks) and magnetic heads have been conducted. Commonly measured roughness parameters are found to be scale dependent, requiring the need of scale-independent fractal parameters to characterize surface roughness. Measurements of atomic-scale friction of a freshly-cleaved highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite exhibited the same periodicity as that of corresponding topography. However, the peaks in friction and those in corresponding topography were displaced relative to each other. Variations in atomic-scale friction and the observed displacement has been explained by the variations in interatomic forces in the normal and lateral directions. Local variation in microscale friction is found to correspond to the local slope suggesting that a ratchet mechanism is responsible for this variation. Directionality in the friction is observed on both micro- and macro scales which results from the surface preparation and anisotropy in surface roughness. Microscale friction is generally found to be smaller than the macrofriction as there is less ploughing contribution in microscale measurements. Microscale friction is load dependent and friction values increase with an increase in the normal load approaching to the macrofriction at contact stresses higher than the hardness of the softer material. Wear rate for single-crystal silicon is approximately constant for various loads and test durations. However, for magnetic disks with a multilayered thin-film structure, the wear of the diamond like carbon overcoat is catastrophic. Breakdown of thin films can be detected with AFM. Evolution of the wear has also been studied using AFM. Wear is found to be initiated at nono scratches. AFM has been modified to obtain load-displacement curves and for nanoindentation hardness measurements with depth of indentation as low as 1 mm. Scratching and indentation on nanoscales are the powerful ways to screen for adhesion and resistance to deformation of ultrathin fdms. Detection of material transfer on a nanoscale is possible with AFM. Boundary lubrication studies and measurement of lubricant-film thichness with a lateral resolution on a nanoscale have been conducted using AFM. Self-assembled monolyers and chemically-bonded lubricant films with a mobile fraction are superior in wear resistance. Finally, AFM has also shown to be useful for nanofabrication/nanomachining. Friction and wear on micro-and nanoscales have been found to be generally smaller compared to that at macroscales. Therefore, micro/nanotribological studies may help def'me the regimes for ultra-low friction and near zero wear.
Corrosion of the disk has been an ongoing concern for the manufacturers of hard disk drives. With the advent of magnetoresistive (MR) head, very low levels of corrosion and contamination become more critical since the raised defects and corrosion products on the disk surface-anything that heats the MR sensor due to the contact-can distort the output signal of the head. This phenomenon is called as thermal asperity. In this paper, the effect of corrosion as a form of Co migration on the occurrence of thermal asperity in MR drives was investigated. The corrosion test at high temperature (60$^{\circ}C$) and high relative humidity (80%) was emphasized in this study and the testing results at ambient condition were compared. The corrosion on the disks was characterized as the amount of Co ion migration using an ion chromatography (IC) and a time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS). It is proved that corrosion on the disk surface after storage testing is closely correlated to the amount of Co ions migration from the magnetic layer to disk surfaces and higher Co migration causes more thermal asperities in the drive. In order to reduce Co migration, several methods such as burnishing process and structure of the carbon overcoat were investigated. It is found that the hydrogenated carbon overcoat shows the least Co migration among different types of overcoat layer. However, the most effective way to reduce Co migration is the application of Cr layer between the overcoat and the magnetic alloy layer.
Self-contained portable remote-indicating magnetic compass was designed and tested. Its sensing part consists of main scale disk of rotary encoder with photo-etched 180, oopaque slits and three pairs of light sources and detectors seperated by a transparent index scale, so that any angular deflection of main scale disk against the bowl may be detected optically. The outputs from the sensing part are transformed into digital ship's course indication by electronics unit which consists of operational amplifier, phase discriminator, up-down counter and counting starter circuit. The results from testign the above compass with turntable at variable rate of turn are as following : 1) The main scale disk deflection against the bowl can be detected without any disturbing influence to the freedom of its north-seeking function. 2) The digital indication resolution is found to be $\circ \pm$1 degree. 3) Misrepresenting indication can be avoided by ensuring dimension uniformity and arrangement accuracy of slits on main and index scale disks and by centering pivot in the encoder disk. 4) Indication resolution should be improved by modifying the signal processing and by doubling the number of slits on compass card. 5) Further study should be made on developing non-conductive compass liquid, analogue repeater driving system and more compact processing element.
Purpose: To analyze the possible association between magnetic resonance imaging signal intensity of temporomandibular joint disk and posterior attachment, and the type and extent of disk displacement, disk configuration, effusion and clinical signs in patients with internal derangement. Materials and Methods: Magnetic resonance images of the 132 temporomandibular joints of 66 patients with temporomandibular joint displacement were analyzed. The clinical findings were obtained by retrospective review of the patients' records. The type and extent of disk displacement, disk configuration and effusion were evaluated on the proton density MR images. The signal intensity from the anterior band, posterior band and posterior attachment were measured on MR images. The associations between the type and extent of disk displacement, disk configuration, effusion and clinical signs and the MR signal intensity of disk and posterior attachment were statistically analyzed by student's t-test. Results: Of 132 joints, 87 (65.9%) showed anterior disk displacement with reduction (ADR) and 45 (34.1%) showed anterior disk displacement without reduction (ADnR). The signals from posterior attachments were lower in joints with ADnR than those of ADR (p<0.05). The results showed statistically significant (p<0.05) association between the type and extent of disk displacement and disk configuration, and decreased signal intensity of posterior attachment. There were no statistical associations between pain, noise and limited mouth opening, and signal intensity of disk and posterior attachment. Conclusions: The average signal from posterior attachment was lower in joints with ADnR than that of ADR. The type and extent of disk displacement and disk configuration appeared to be correlated with the signal intensity from posterior attachment.
In recent years the recording density of hard disks has increased significantly largely due to the decreasing flying height. As a result of decreased flying height, the reliability issue become more critical. In this work the relationship between hard disk surface damage and data loss was investigated by using an actual hard disk drive. The purpose of this research was to identify the key factor which leads to data loss. It was shown that data loss is directly related to the physical damage of the Co-magnetic layer and there was no data loss when only carbon protective coating was damaged by the diamond tip.

A disk rotor dynamic analysis program called by DR. DAP is developed for disk drive spindle systems to analyze dynamic characteristics in operation and to estimate the effects of excitation sources. It is applicable to design for stabilization and to select parts of disk drive spindle systems. The disk drive spindle system in this program is modeled as a flexible shaft with multiple flexible disks, which is supported by bearings and driven by electric motor, and its complicated coupled vibration characteristics are analyzed by using a substructure synthesis technique with the assumed-modes method. All the coupled modes of interest can be well predicted by the example of a three disk hard disk drive with the three tuning parameters. It is also shown that, with the introduction of the excitation sources associated with the defects of ball bearing systems, the magnetic unbalance of spindle motor, the program can well predict the stability of the system, i.e., the possibility of resonance.
