  • The magnetoelectric (ME) characteristics for Terfenol-D/PZT laminate composite dependence on bias magnetic field is investigated. At low frequency, ME response is determined by the piezomagnetic coefficient $d_{33,m}$ and the elastic compliance $s_{33}^H$ of magnetostrictive material, $d_{33,m}$ and $s_{33}^H$ for Terfenol-D are inherently nonlinear and dependent on $H_{dc}$, leading to the influence of $H_{dc}$ on low-frequency ME voltage coefficient. At resonance, the mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ dependences on $H_{dc}$ results in the differences between the low-frequency and resonant ME voltage coefficient with $H_{dc}$. In terms of ${\Delta}E$ effect, the resonant frequency shift is derived with respect to the bias magnetic field. Considering the nonlinear effect of magnetostrictive material and $Q_m$ dependence on $H_{dc}$c, it predicts the low-frequency and resonant ME voltage coefficients as a function of the dc bias magnetic field. A good agreement between the theoretical results and experimental data is obtained and it is found that ME characteristics dependence on $H_{dc}$ are mainly influenced by the nonlinear effect of magnetostrictive material.

  • Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based nanocomposites are fabricated by incorporation of boron nitride (BN) nanosheets with anisotropic orientation for a potential high thermal conducting ferroelectric materials. The PVDF is dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF) and homogeneously mixed with exfoliated BN nanosheets, which is then cast into a polyimide film under application of high magnetic fields (0.45~10 T), where the direction of the filler alignment was controlled. The BN nanosheets are exfoliated by a mixed way of solvothermal method and ultrasonication prior to incorporation into the PVDF-based polymer suspension. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and thermal diffusivity are measured for the characterization of the polymer nanocomposites. Analysis shows that BN nanosheets are exfoliated into the fewer layers, whose basal planes are oriented either perpendicular or parallel to the composite surfaces without necessitating the surface modification induced by high magnetic fields. Moreover, the nanocomposites show a dramatic thermal diffusivity enhancement of 1056% by BN nanosheets with perpendicular orientation in comparison with the pristine PVDF at 10 vol % of BN, which relies on the degree of filler orientation. The mechanism for the magnetic field-induced orientation of BN and enhancement of thermal property of PVDF-based composites by the BN assembly are elucidated.

  • A flywheel system is an electromechanical energy storage device that stores energy by rotating a rotor. The rotating part, supported by magnetic bearings, consists of the metallic shaft, composite rims of fiber-reinforced materials, and a hub that connects the rotor to the shaft. The delamination in the fiber wound composite rotor often lowered the performance of the flywheel energy storage system. In this work, an advanced hybrid composite rotor with a split hub was designed to both overcome the delamination problem in composite rim and prevent separation between composite rim and metallic shaft within all range of rotational speed. It was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite clement method. In order to demonstrate the predominant perfom1ance of the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, a high spin test was performed up to 40,000 rpm. Four radial strains and another four circumferential strains were measured using a wireless telemetry system. These measured strains were in excellent agreement with the FE analysis. Most importantly, the radial strains were reduced using the hybrid composite rotor with a split hub, and all of them were compressive. As a conclusion, a compressive pressure on the inner surface of the proposed flywheel rotor was achieved, and it can lower the radial stresses within the composite rotor, enhancing the performance of the flywheel rotor.

  • Nano-size manganese ferrite reinforced conductive polypyrrole composites reveal a core-shell structure by in situ polymerization, in the presence of dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid as the surfactant and dopant, and iron chloride as the oxidant. The structure and magnetic properties of manganese ferrite nano-fillers were measured, by using X-ray diffraction and vibrating sample magnetometer. The morphology, microstructure, and conductivity of the composite were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and four-wire technique. The microwave-absorbing properties of composites reinforcement dispersed in resin coating with the coating thickness of 1.2 nm were investigated, by using vector network analyzers, in the frequency range of 8~12 GHz. A reflection loss of -8 dB was observed at 10.5 GHz.

  • This paper presents the characterization of fatigue crack in the A283 Grade C steel using the MMM method by identifying the effects of magnetic flux leakage towards the crack growth rate, da/dN, and crack length. The previous and current research on the relation between MMM parameters and fatigue crack effect is still unclear and requires specific analysis to validate that. This method is considered to be a passive magnetic method among other Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods. The tension-tension fatigue test was conducted with a testing frequency of 10 Hz with 4 kN loaded, meanwhile the MMM response signals were captured using a MMM instrument. A correlation between the crack growth rate and magnetic flux leakage produces a sigmoid shape curve with a constant values which present the gradient, m value is in the ranges of 1.4357 to 4.0506, and the y-intercept, log C in the ranges of $4{\times}10^{-7}$ to 0.0303. Moreover, a linear relation was obtained between the crack length and magnetic flux leakage which present the R-Squared values is at 0.830 to 0.978. Therefore, MMM method has their own capability to investigate and characterize the fatigue crack effects as a main source of fracture mechanism for ferrous-based materials.

  • By adding 1wt.% $HfB_{2}$ into $Nd_{3-4}Fe_{77-78.5}B_{18.5}$ alloys, the grain growth of $Fe_{3}B/Nd_{2}Fe_{14}B$ composite phases during annealing was found to be hindered by 40~50%. It is proposed that the addition of $HfB_{2}$ leads to the formation of fine dispersoids of $HfB_{2}$ in the $Fe_{3}B/Nd_{2}Fe_{14}B$ composite magnet. The maximum energy product($(B.H)_{max}$) as well as intrinsic coercivity($_{i}H_{c}$) for the $Nd_{3}Fe_{78.5}B_{18.5}\;+\;1wt.%\;HfB_{2}$ alloy were enhanced by more than 25% $(B.H)_{max}=10\;MGOe,\;_{i}H_{c}=2.5\;kOe)$ due to the addition of $HfB_{2}$ while remanent magntization($B_{r}$) was reduced slightly. Itis deduced that the formation of fine dispersoids will also play a role of magnetic domain pinning.

  • REBCO coated conductors are widely used for HTS power application, high magnetic field magnet application, and etc. A thermal stability of the REBCO conductor is essential for the operation of HTS-based device, and thermal conductivities of the conductor are relevant parameters for modeling cryogenic heat transfer. REBCO conductors consist of a REBCO layer, copper layers for electrical stabilization and a hastelloy substrate. At cryogenic temperature, thermal conductivity of copper and silver strongly depend on the purity of the material and the intensity of the magnetic field. In this study, thermal conductivities of the laminated composite structure of REBCO conductor are evaluated by using the thermal network model and the multidimensional heat conduction analysis. As a result, the thermal network model is applicable to REBCO conductors configured in series or parallel alone and multidimensional heat conduction analysis is necessary for complex cases of series and parallel configuration.

  • Fe-Co-Ni particles with an average size of 45 and 135 nm are characterized in terms of magnetic phase transformation and magnetic properties at room temperature. BCC structure of Fe-Co-Ni spherical particles can be synthesized from Fe-Co-Ni-Al-Cu precursor films by heating at 600-80$0^{\circ}C$ for the phase separation of Fe-Co rich Fe-Co-Ni particles, followed by a post heating at $600^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours. The average size of nanoparticles was directly determined by the thickness of precursor films. Exchange interactive hysteresis was observed for the nano-composite (Fe-Co-Ni)+(Fe-Ni-Al) films resulting from the short exchange interface between ferromagnetic Fe-Co-Ni particles surrounded by almost papramagnetic Ni-Al-Fe matrix. Arraying the isolated Fe-Co-Ni nano-particles in a random arrangement on $Al_2O_3$substrate the particle assembly showed a behavior of dipole interactive ferromagnetic clusters depending on their volume and inter-particle distance.

  • We have synthesized ferromagnetic ${\tau}$-phase $Mn_{54}Al_{46}/{\alpha}$-phase $Fe_{65}Co_{35}$ composite by annealing a mixture of paramagnetic ${\varepsilon}$-phase $Mn_{54}Al_{46}$ and ferromagnetic ${\alpha}$-phase $Fe_{65}Co_{35}$ particles at $650^{\circ}C$. The volume fraction ($f_h$) of hard ${\tau}$-phase $Mn_{54}Al_{46}$ of the composite was varied from 0 to 1. During the annealing, magnetic phase transformation occurred from paramagnetic ${\varepsilon}$-phase to ferromagnetic ${\tau}$-phase $Mn_{54}Al_{46}$. The magnetization and coercivity of the composite monotonically decreased and increased, respectively, as the $f_h$ increased. These results are in good agreement with our proposed composition dependent coercivity and modified magnetization equations.
