  • In this paper, in order to apply magnetic fluid with superparamagnetic property as the substitute of ferromagnetic materials, physical properties of magnetic fluid are investigated. A targeted drug delivery system using a capsule filled magnetic fluid is proposed where a magnetic fluid capsule and cylinders are considered as a drug and vital organs, respectively. The dynamic governing equation of this system first is derived. Fluid viscosity, clearance between a cylinder and a magnetic fluid capsule, and levitation height with respect to different cylinder height are considered as major parameters to evaluate dynamic characteristics of the system. The experiments and simulations for the position control of the magnetic fluid capsule in various cylinders are conducted using PID controller. The results show that magnetic fluid with the superparamagnetic property can be applied to a targeted drug delivery system.

  • This paper presents a new nonmechanical rehabilitation system driven by magnetic force. Typically, finger rehabilitation mechanisms are complex mechanical systems. The proposed method allows wireless operation, a simple configuration, and easy installation on the hand for active actuation by magnetic force. The system consists of a driving coil, driving magnets (M1), and auxiliary magnets (M2 and M3), respectively, at the finger, palm, and the center of coil. The magnets and the driving coil produce three magnetic forces for an active motions of the finger. During active actuations, magnetic attractive forces between M1 and M2 or between M1 and M3 enhance the flexion/extension motions. The proposed system simply improves the extension motion of the finger using a magnetic system. In this system, the maximum force and angular variation of the extension motion were 0.438 N and $49^{\circ}$, respectively. We analyzed the magnetic interaction in the system and verified finger's active actuation.

  • Gas removal characteristics of an air clean system, consisted of a filter and a nonthermal discharge plasma reactor with a magnetic field, have been investigated with emphasis on the enhancing gas removal efficiency of the applied magnetic field. It is found that the magnetic field influenced significantly to the corona discharge characteristics, decreasing the corona onset voltage and increasing the corona current. As a result, the proposed air clean system with the magnetic field showed the higher removal efficiency of the gas (e.g., trimethlyamine) than that of without the magnetic field. This would be because the magnetic field applied to the discharge plasma reactor of the air clean system can elevate the corona characteristics, and activate the generation of ozone, thus the removal efficiency of the gas was concurrently enhanced. This reveals that the proposed air clean system with the magnetic field could be used as an effective means of removal an indoor pollutant gas.

  • This paper presents a development of an analog type magnetic positioning system and its positioning accuracy improvement using fuzzy inference system. As the magnetic positioning system used on a magnet-gyro guidance system for AGV(automatic guided vehicle), it measures a position of magnet embedded in floor of the work place. The existing product of the magnetic positioning system is very expensive in Korea because it is being sold in a foreign country exclusively. Moreover, the positioning accuracy of the product is low because it uses digital type unipolar hall sensors. Hence, we developed the magnetic positioning system by ourselves and improved the positioning accuracy of the developed magnetic positioning system using fuzzy inference system. For experiment, we used the analog type magnetic positioning system which we have developed, and compared the performance of the proposed method with the performance of the existing positioning method for the magnetic positioning system. In experimental results, we verified that the proposed method improved the positioning accuracy of the magnetic positioning system.

  • In many cases, the magnetic farce model is linearized at the origin in designing the controller of a magnetic bearing system. However. this linear assumption is violated by the unmodeled nonlinear effect such as sensor dislocation and backup bearing dislocation. Therefore, a direct probe into the nonlinear magnetic force model in an active magnetic bearing system is necessary. To analyze the nonlinear magnetic force model of a magnetic bearing system, phase plot analysis which is to plot the numerical solution of the nonlinear equation in several initial points in the interested region is applied. Phase plot analysis is used to observe a nonlinear dynamic system qualitatively (not quantitatively). With this method, we can get much useful information of the nonlinear system. Among this information, a bifurcation graph that represents stability and locations of fixed points is essential. From the bifurcation graph, a stability criterion of magnetic bearing system is derived.

  • The magnetic levitation system is utilized in the magnetic bearing of high-speed rotor because of little friction, no lubrication, no noise and so on. The magnetic levitation system need the feedback controller for the stabilization of system, and gap sensors are generally used to measure the gap. The use of gap sensors brings out the increase of the number of troublesome, and the decrease of the control performance because of the dislocation between the measurement point and the control point. This paper presents the design of the gap estimation circuit for the sensorless method proposed by authors in the magnetic levitation system. We made the gap estimation circuit which was composed of both the superposition circuit and the measuring circuit. And we investigated the validity of the usefulness of the proposed sensorless method in the magnetic levitation system through results of actual experiment.

  • MlAB(magnetically impelled arc butt) welding is a sort of pressure welding method by melting two pipe sections with high speed rotating arc and upsetting two pipes in the axial direction. The electro-magnetic force, the driving force of the arc rotation, is generated by interaction of arc current and magnetic field induced from the magnetic flux generator in the welding system. In this study, an openable coil system for the generation of magnetic flux and a 3-dimensional numerical model for analyzing the electro-magnetic field were proposed. Through the fundamental numerical analyses, a magnetic concentrator was adopted for smoothing the magnetic flux density distribution in the circumferential direction. And then a series of numerical analysis were performed for investigating the effect of system parameters on the magnetic flux density distribution in the interested welding area.. Numerical quantitative analyses showed that magnetic flux density distribution generated from the proposed coil system is mainly dependent on the exciting current in the coil and the position of coil or concentrator from the pipe outer surface. And the gap between pipe ends and arc current are also considered as important factors on arc rotating behavior.

  • We have been developing a magnetic separation device that can be used in low magnetic fields for paramagnetic materials. Magnetic separation of paramagnetic particles with a small particle size is desired for volume reduction of contaminated soil in Fukushima or separation of iron scale from water supply system in power plants. However, the implementation of the system has been difficult due to the needed magnetic fields is high for paramagnetic materials. This is because there was a problem in installing such a magnet in the site. Therefore, we have developed a magnetic separation system that combines a selection tube and magnetic separation that can separate small sized paramagnetic particles in a low magnetic field. The selection tube is a technique for classifying the suspended particles by utilizing the phenomenon that the suspended particles come to rest when the gravity acting on the particles and the drag force are balanced when the suspension is flowed upward. In the balanced condition, they can be captured with even small magnetic forces. In this study, we calculated the particle size of paramagnetic particles trapped in a selection tube in a high gradient magnetic field. As a result, the combination of the selection tube and HGMS (High Gradient Magnetic Separation-system) can separate small sized paramagnetic particles under low magnetic field with high efficiency, and this paper shows its potential application.

  • A sputtering-assisted magnetic field system was successfully developed for depositing crystalline Cu thin films at room temperature. This system employs a plasma source and an ion-beam gun with two magnetic field generators, which is covered with sputtering target and the ion-beam gun, simultaneously serving as sputtering plasma and a magnetic field generator. The formation of crystalline Cu thin films at room temperature was dominated by magnetic fields, which was revealed by preliminary experiments. This system can be employed for producing crystalline metal thin films at room temperature.
